Congratulations on your engagement. It is a magical yet busy time. Be sure you have your paperwork in order. Find out right away what you need to do from the appropriate local clerk office.
If you're getting married in Boston, Massachusetts, please see guidelines below:

1. Typically both the bride and groom are 18 years old or older. If under the age of 24, proof of your age is required. A certified birth record or passport will suffice.

2. You must give your social security number when applying for a marriage license.

3. A marriage license can be obtained from a county clerk's office. For more info call 617-635-4179. Cost is $50 cash. No credit cards or checks accepted.

4. Both bride and groom must be present and bring driver's license and birth certificate. Have your social security numbers handy as well.

5. The marriage license is valid for 60 days. There is a 3 day waiting period. You cannot get a license and get married the same day License is not good outside of Massachusetts.

6. A Priest, Minister, Rabbi or a Justice of the Peace may perform the ceremony. A Justice of the Peace does not require witnesses to the ceremony but some religions may require witnesses so you should contact such person before the ceremony so that requirement can be met.

7. The person who performs the marriage ceremony must sign the license and return it to the city or town where it was issued.
