Wedding dresses are a cost and design compromise. Wedding dresses can be the most stressful, as well as most gratifying part of planning a wedding. In some situation, a bride-to-be may already have in mind what kind of dress they want. Believe it or not, some women have been researching this since junior high school.
There is also the sense that when the groom sees his bride for the first time in her dress, the dress should compliment her features and build. Like anything else she gets for her wedding, a woman should feel good about her wedding dress purchase. It should be comfortable and flattering and help her feel special on her special day.
With the Internet, brides-to-be can view a number of different styles of wedding dresses before they try something on. They can even purchase their wedding dress online as well. This may seem very convenient, but being fitted properly at a store is still essential. Like any other clothing, different styles of wedding dresses fit differently, and most people find that, especially with their first few choices, a wedding dress look different on the woman than it does in a catalog page or on a rack.
Many brides-to-be are also turning to used wedding dresses as well. This is an affordable avenue for women, and many even sell their dresses back shortly after their wedding. Traditions have changed, and there is very little saving of the bride’s dress for her daughter to wear 25 years later going on today. Doing this requires specific storage techniques so that the dress does not yellow, and it seems to be much more of a hassle than it’s worth to most women today.
For many brides-to-be cost plays a factor in their wedding dress decision. This can be difficult for those who may have champagne taste on a beer budget. And what about all of the low cost wedding dresses not fitting right and the only one that does may be just out of your price range? Yes, these scenarios do come up. The thing to do here is to ask yourself if some other area of your wedding planning can be cut back on a little bit to help you buy the right dress that fits and looks right on you.
Again, while the Internet can save you a lot of gas and leg work, you still should visit a wedding dress shop and talk to a person who is willing to size you and fit you appropriately. Also, input from friends, just like with planning the entire wedding event, can both be helpful and a curse.
It is probably good to have your maid of honor help you with your shopping, she will be able to help you will great ideas and styles, plus you can make a day of it and have some fun. But pay close attention to her tastes and yours, and if she is trying to impose her tastes on your wedding dress purchase, you may want to take her input with a grain of salt, or seek another person’s input.

QUESTION:
Do bridal stores make the dresses that you can buy there?
When my Aunt got married we went to a store that sold specifically bridal gowns and things for bridesmaids. I was just wondering where they get the dresses from? Do they make them themselves, or order and alter pre-existing ones to fit the needs of the brides?I'd really love to open a bridal dress store when I'm older because they seem so magical.
I didn't know where to post this so I put it in fashion and weddings.

ANSWER:
There are a couple ways to be clothes: "off the rack" means that you walk into a store (or go online), find your size, buy it, and leave with the item that day (or have it shipped to you immediately). This is how we usually buy clothes. Some bridal stores do sell dresses off-the-rack, especially some of the bigger warehouse type places. The other option is to have something "custom-made" (the old-fashioned term for this, which you hear more often in reference to menswear) is "bespoke." This is how most wedding gowns are sold. You pick out the style you like, your measurements are taken, and the item is custom-sewn to fit you. Obviously, this takes longer because there is more labor involved - especially for something like a wedding gown, which often has a lot of layers and embellishment and construction involved. So that's why many brides start shopping for their gowns long in advance - it might take up to several months for that individual's dress to be made and shipped to her.
However, the person running the bridal store usually ISN'T the person making the dress. While some SUPER upscale designer dresses are made in Europe, most wedding dresses are made in China. So the store owner will place the bride's order with a distributor, who will relay the order to the factory, then the factory will make the dress and send it along.
If you're interested in the business side of weddings, I recommend the book "One Perfect Day: The Selling of the American Wedding" by Rebecca Mead. It's not a how-to book, but more of a look at the "wedding industry," and there's a whole beefy chapter on where wedding gowns come from.

So far, she is my favorite designer. I am curious for a ballpark figure of how much her dresses cost. The prices are, of course, not listed on the website. Don't bother answering if you have no clue. Thanks for your help!-

depends where you buy them. i tried on one Eve of Milady dress in one store, and it was 0 ish...but i was at another store and they wanted like 0 for the exact same dress!i have learned though that wedding dresses arent ever as much as you expect them to be. i was expecting the bottom line for any dress to be at least 0....so when i found my perfect dress for 0 i was very happy!
sorry if that wasnt as specific as you were looking for, but unless its a chain store selling the dress, it will probably be a differant price everywhere you look

QUESTION:
How do David's Bridal dresses sizes run?
Tomorrow, I'm going to try on both wedding and bridesmaid's dresses at David's Bridal...do you guys know how they run size wise? For example, if you wear a 6/7 in regular clothes, will you wear like a larger or smaller size in the dresses or about the same? Thanks! I just want to be prepared for tomorrow.
-
ANSWER:
They run on the small size. I wore a size 6 at the time and I actually ended up with a size 10/12. YUP! It was a big jump, but don't worry, it doesn't mean you gained weight. The dresses run very small and they will size them to fit you. That's how all wedding gowns and brides maids dresses are.Have fun trying on gowns. Try a lot on and bring people with you to help you. When you cry and get all emotional when you look at yourself in the mirror. That's the one! And, don't' let anyone convince you that it isn't the one you love. It's your wedding!!

QUESTION:
How much are Ella Bridal dresses?
I'm curious to know a round-about price for dresses from Ella Bridal (www.ellabridals.com). Please let me know if you have any idea about how much these dresses cost!-
ANSWER:
Honestly not sure, since they sell their dresses to boutiques. And that would depend on the boutique- how much they would up charge. I looked at the website and there is a store locator on there so I would suggest you go to a retailer that sells Ella Bridal gowns and see what they charge and compare it to other bridal boutiques that sell the same thing. That would give you a honest comparison and if you do not want to spend what they are, the bridal consultant at the store can show you the same style of Ella gown made by someone else to fit whatever budget you are working with. I ran into the same thing when I got married last year. I saw a gown online that didn't have a cost and went to 3 boutiques in 3 cities and they all said a different cost for the same gown made by the same designer. It helps to shop around, I got my gown that was at one boutique for significantly less by negotiating with them since I knew how much other people were asking for the dress. It saved me hundreds of dollars. Good Luck!

QUESTION:
Do David's Bridal stores carry dresses in all sizes for you to try on?
I'm tired of going to a bridal boutique to try on dresses only to find that they only have the standard size 10-12. I can't ever get a realistic idea of what the dress will look like on me.-
ANSWER:
You're like me! I'm a 0 or a 2, street size. It's almost impossible to like a dress that is sooo big.
Yes, davids bridal has small sizes...but honestly I went there and was appalled at their lack of service. Granted, I didn't make an appointment, but I was asked by 5 different women if I had "registered" (which I had), and then waited for an hour before finally leaving.
They wouldn't let me try a dress on without a consultant. One almost took us until the lady at the desk informed her that we were "just looking"...I don't know where she got that impression. It was pretty offensive to me, planning for May and all.
I suppose I didn't look worthy of service.
So the hunt continues....maybe if you make an appointment you will be better off, but I refuse to let them be a part of my day now.
Good luck!

QUESTION:
Who buys the dresses for the bridal party?
We are having a vow-renewal ceremony (wedding), and I am wondering who usually buys the bridal maids/maid-of-honor dresses? Also mother of the bride/groom's dresses? Thanks.-
ANSWER:
Traditionally, the bride/bride's family picks up the costs of those in the bridal party and this includes the dresses. However, as more couples have started to pay for their own weddings, they have put the cost of being in the wedding back on those participating which means the bridesmaids pay for their own. The mother of the bride and the mother of the groom may choose whatever they wish to wear (although they usually ensure it coordinates with the wedding colors) and are responsible for paying for their own outfits. Congratulations.

QUESTION:
If I buy the dresses, shoes and accessories of the bridal party should I still buy them a gift?
I bought the dresses for the bridal party. I am also buying their shoes, and accessories. Should I still buy them gifts?-
ANSWER:
I would think the dress was the gift. I understand that it varies with the custom of the area you live in, but in this area, the bridesmaids buy the whole outfit.
How nice of you to buy the most expensive item!
You should remember to thank them for being a bridesmaid, and if you like, you could give them a token present, like a framed picture of the bride and groom. But it is not necessary! And I for one, would not be expecting anything else, after you bought me a dress! And the flowers I was going to carry, and a free meal and entertainment at the wedding, and a free meal at the rehearsal dinner...

QUESTION:
On average how much do Alfred Sung wedding dresses cost from a bridal shop?
I absolutely love Alfred Sung dresses, and am just wondering the price range as they don't list on bridal shop website and I don't want to buy online.-
ANSWER:
My dress was an Alfred Sung and since I dont live in the US but wanted to buy the real thing from a secure store, I called all around the country to inquire if they would order it and send it to me. Well for the same dress I find quite a difference in cost! One place was 1000+, another 800, and finally I chose a shop that was selling for 700. This is the same exact dress mind you, so it depends on the shop and how they set their prices.I think there are also shops in Canada selling Alfred Sung, so you may want to check into that as well.

QUESTION:
Do bridal shops really rip out the tags from dresses?
My mom bought me the book "Bridal Bargains" and it said that most bridal shops tear out the tags from the dresses so you can't actually see who made it or what fabric content is of the dress. Is this true?I've only been to one bridal shop in the last year but all of the dresses had the original tags on them. I was just wondering if this "tag ripping" policy was really that widespread.
-
ANSWER:
Rip out tags, no.Remove tags, absolutely. Here is why. Woman on a budget shops for dresses, takes up sales woman's time (she's on commission, you know). Woman has written down the model number and size and manufacturer from the tag and then buys the dress cheaper online. The argument from those who do this is that the stores who remove tags are mean and don't deserve their business. Here's a news flash: if you have no intention of buying from them, they aren't losing any business. Oh, so you won't buy your accessories or bridesmaid dresses there either? That's okay, they fully understand your budget - if discount on the 'net is what you want, you are entitled to buy what you want.
Another argument: The boutique should make money by providing service! Spending hours helping someone so she can buy the dress from somebody else is not a service they are required to provide. The salesperson needs to put food on her table. Of course she enjoys her job. You enjoy yours, too, (hopefully) but you don't do it for no pay.
The person who worked for a dry cleaner is absolutely correct. The dress you *purchase* will have the tags inside. Most smaller stores and boutiques will only have a few dresses in a small range of sizes to help you envision what the dress will look like. The owner will then order the dress from the vendor and have it shipped to the store for you. By the way, the boutique can't return that dress to the vendor, so there are no returns to you, either.
Maybe wedding dress vendors on the internet do take returns. If so, that would be one advantage to doing business with them. Different strokes, and all.
Fiber content of the dress - well, very expensive ones are silk, less expensive ones are polyester, either one is going to be dry clean only - if the ornamentation can be cleaned at all.
David's Bridal = polyester, though in some larger cities where the recession isn't so bad, there may be a few silk. They are all made in China, by factories run by David's Bridal.

Here's Kleinfeld's site which shows the lines they do carry: http://www.kleinfeldbridal.com/index.cfm?pid=50&title=weddinggownKleinfeld's is a very swanky store. If you're looking for a Jasmine dress, I suggest you go somewhere that's not as high-end. There are lots of bridal salons in NYC.

QUESTION:
Can I walk into a bridal store and look at dresses without an appointment?
Im not ready to start trying on dresses for my wedding yet, I just want to start looking at what dresses are in-style around my area. Wedding magazines are good and all, but im past that part in looking for a dress. Is it alright for me to walk into a store and just browse dresses?-
ANSWER:
This really depends on what's the custom in your local area.I have never heard of a wedding store that frowns on brides coming in to just look. The stores I'm familiar with LOVE it when brides come to browse, because that's how they drum up business; they wouldn't be able to stay open if they only catered to brides who made appointments. However, the other answerers are likely also right because the stores in their local area probably operate differently than the stores here.
However, if you think you're going to need help when you're there or if you go during a busy time of the week (say, Saturday or Friday evening), you'd be wise to make an appointment. This benefits you, because you can be sure that someone will be available to answer your questions or help you.
Remember that these businesses are there to serve you and to provide you with the service you're buying. You pay the same if you get lots of help or none. Appointments exist for your convenience, not for theirs.

QUESTION:
Is it practical to ask those who would be in your bridal party to wear the same color instead of same dresses?
I am planning a wedding for july and I want it to be very low maintenance and simple but meaningful. I have too many friends who I want to stand with me. If I didn't the bridal party would be too big and it's going to be a small simple production. Plus, we really don't have time to fuss over dresses and fittings and stuff. Is it tacky to have all my friends who would have been bridesmaids to wear black and accesorize identically? My sister and best friend, however, will have different dresses. Please help...-
ANSWER:
I did that same thing - black dresses of their choice. It looked fine & they could wear them again and they loved it!
