Lose The Weight Before Your Big Day

Cheap Weddings

Everybody wants his big day to be special and memorable. The average wedding nowadays costs between 20.000 and 30.000 Dollars - but in times of credit crunch not everybody can afford to spend this kind of money. Being on a tight budget doesn't mean you have can't have a stylish wedding - here are some tips on how to organize an elegant but cheap wedding.

Set up a Budget

A crucial step for the organisation of a cheap wedding is making a plan. Without a plan costs add up and you will run out of money really fast. So you will have to sit down and talk things through. Determine what is important for the two of you and at which points it might be possible to compromise. You want the dress of your dreams? Then you might have to save money on the reception. Your fiancA has his heart set on live music? Cut down on the guest list perhaps. You get the idea - get your priorities clear.

In a second step determine how much money you will be able to spend and then divide it between the different points on your list. Use a checklist in order not to forget anything. This way you'll stay on top of everything and avoid ugly surprises.

Setting the Date

By choosing the date of your wedding wisely, you can save a huge amount of money. Go for the off season, avoid the typical wedding season (spring) and days like Valentines day, "pretty" dates like the 10 of October 2010... Wedding venues tend to charge a hefty surcharge for these days. If you decide to get married on a friday you might be able to get an even bigger discount, just make sure to ask for it! Make sure people know you are looking for a good price and ask for their advice. Nowadays being on a tight budget is a very common thing and nothing to be ashamed off!

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Cheap weddings?
My boyfriend and I have been together for almost 12 years. We have two beautiful children together. We haven't got married yet because every penny we make goes towards bills or our children. How can we have a nice but cheap wedding. Also do you get more back on your taxes when you are married?
Neither of us have been married before. We have been together since we were 16 years old. I wanted something beautiful since it is our first time. But yet something cheap since we really dont have alot of money. We haven't got married yet because we want it special. Since we dont plan on doing it ever again.

    • ANSWER:
As far as the tax question goes, it used to be like that, that you'd get more back if you were married. However, I think Clinton helped change that during his administration because it discriminates against gay couples who can't legally marry.

Nice, but cheap, wedding? Well, you need to spend something. Keep the guest list small. Make your own decorations. Have your family help with catering the food. A wedding doesn't need to cost tens of thousands of dollars. If you really had that much to spend, wouldn't it be better to put it towards your children or your home? I think so.

      Good luck!

  2. QUESTION:
    cheap weddings?
Okay... My fiance is in the army and Im back home with my family for now.... My father... I am sad to say, is using again (how the heck he is functioning IDK but he's a CFO and everything) and since he's the one in the family that has all the $ and he's blowing it on stupid stuff- and Im really ashamed of him and am not having him at the wedding.... thus my dilehma... How can I make a good wedding on a tight budget? Its not going to be big- my side is just my grandparents (moms parents) my mom and my sister....So I know that will help... I always wanted the "cinderella" type wedding but I dont like "big" things and my fiance isn't about the show either... I dont want to do a JOP because I want the "real deal" Is it silly to have a "wedding" vs. JOP with such a small guest list? (his is small as well- maybe 10 ppl if that- mostly from his unit)
Im in CT right now... but it will probably take place in TN... as far as my father goes... no offense to those who wrote comments- but he has been deemed as narsasstic and anti-social- people that have his diagnosis are 3% likely to recover... and if it wasnt for my mom, we wouldnt have anything.... again I was just trying to give the idea of what was going on but please stay focused on the *wedding* issues!! Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Congrats! What about a bed and breakfast? Will the folks be coming from out of town or do they live in TN? Maybe try to work something out with the hotel and get everyone to stay there. People will usually work with you when they know it is a military man.. definitely check out the base options, like the NCO or Officers club at a base/fort in TN. Have the wedding you want!! Go for it!! Enjoy.

  3. QUESTION:
What are some cheap places to hold both weddings and receptions in the suburbs of Minneapolis and St. Paul?
I just got engaged last week and am looking for a place that does both weddings and receptions for cheap. I would also like it if they included a dj, linens, decorations, flowers, etc. Please let me know!

    • ANSWER:
Depends on the number of guests. There are a number of nice restaurants in both Mpls and St Paul that have space specifically for weddings/receptions, but they are usually limited to 50-75 guests. One restaurant in St. Paul included EVERYTHING including the cake, flowers and background music (no place for dancing so no DJ).

  4. QUESTION:

    • ANSWER:
You can do it -- but don't expect it to be extravagant.

First of all, save everywhere you can. For most weddings, food alone will cost several times your total budget -- so will the photographer or the hall or the officiator.

The best tips I can offer are:

      1. Have it in a place that isn't going to cost an arm and a leg. Try to find someone with a nice back yard or a local park.

      2. If you want a photographer, consider student photographers. The majority of photographers would cost more than your WHOLE budget -- but if you can find a few student photographers, you can save quite a bit. Call a local high school and ask if there's a time that teachers are in their rooms but not teaching -- usually after class is the best time -- and go meet with the teacher that does photography classes. Tell them you want to have students photograph your wedding -- lay out the details. What I recommend is asking that the students shoot digital, and buying three SD cards -- a couple GBs each -- and give one to each student. Draw up a simple contract stating that you get the SD cards and all rights to the photos. Agree on a small price and to allow them to use the photos in their portfolios. The importance of having more than one is that they are students, and therefore they have very little experience. By having the teacher recommend three of the top students, and having all three of them shoot your wedding, you will not only end up with different styled photos, but different quality, as well. I'll warn you now -- you shouldn't expect pro quality. But on this tight a budget, you can't expect that with anyone. Go through pictures on your computer after that night, and choose what you want prints of, then pick a local photo shop for the printing.

      3. Don't serve a full meal. Instead, go with cocktail appetizers if you want to serve food at all. Platters of crackers. Bowls of some good dip. Get some toothpicks, and spear an olive, a cube of cheese, and a small tomato on each one. Keep it small and simple to minimize costs.

      4. If you're any good at baking, consider making your own cake. That may not be an option for you -- and even if it is, still be cautious. Do a couple of test runs before the "real thing." One approach that tends to work well is having a small traditional cake done professionally, then doing simple sheet cakes -- white frosting, a pastry bag, and some sparkling sugar can go a long way.

  5. QUESTION:
Why do people throw cheap or tacky weddings?
Do people just not realise that you do have to spend money if you wish to have a wedding and reception that guests can attend without being bored stupid or starving at?

I'm appalled at some of the questions and answers on here about people throwing 00-00 weddings! They list their menus and it's barely enough to provide a light snack each, no alcohol, poor decorations and flowers, etc, then they have the gall to register for gifts!

If you don't have the money to put on a decent celebration of your marriage, why get married at all?

    • ANSWER:
I agree with you in spirit, I dont see why a couple should rush to get married when they cant afford to spare the money, especially considering that a de facto couple has all the same legal rights as a married couple in Australia. however I do respect peoples rights to do what they want and spend their money (or not) as they choose.

and honestly, as much as it is going to sound terrible, if i was invited to one of those weddings i would be very judgemental. i would probably even make fun of it. hey, at least im being honest!

  6. QUESTION:

  8. QUESTION:
whats sites can i go on to look for cheap weddings things?
im getting soon and would like ideas and sites for ideas to look for things for a wedding

    • ANSWER:
My brother and his wife had the most beautiful wedding in the entire family history....

He and his wife married in a small chapel in the woods - obviously was rural chapel.....And - get this - he and his wife arrived at the wedding in carriage pulled by 2 white horses.

The chapel cost him a small donation to the church - renting the carriage and horses cost 0. A local rancher rented their carriage / horses. The rancher drove the carriage himself, and since he stayed for the wedding - the horses and carriage stayed too.

All the guests family brought their home "best dishes" for the reception - which was held in the Church basement. The family decorated the Church for them - thus costing them nothing.

No catering company could ever have provided us the feast that about 50 old women did. They can't cook as good.

Another thing to note - rural churches have basements that are almost always set up as full service kitchens, and have the basement laid out for large gatherings, complete with tables and chairs.

Music was provided by home stereo system, and the "younger set" arranging for a good evening supply of appropriate music. It is amazing the quality of music you can get supplied if you let a couple teens be the "DJ's" - obviously with a little guidance in selection of music. :) Also, for some reason - those DJ's felt compelled to take requests from the party very seriously too. LOL

SO - they ended up having gorgeous wedding in chapel in woods, with fine family atmosphere - unlimited amount of room for guests....and was so very relaxed that it is very much remembered as the "best wedding" ever. And - it only cost them a couple hundred bucks....

It was a very fun time for all. :P

The scenery was gorgous, the couple beamed, the guests were very relaxed, no time limit on "how late" food will be available from the caterers or serving sizes.....No stress....

      ----------------

The point of this story - is that having a "formal" wedding, a reception, having the wedding remembered by all as "the best one"....does not have to be expensive - not if you are creative......

No web sites were needed for this one. Just a few phone calls to ask around about "who knew a good location?" and "where I could get a carriage and horses really cheap", and "do you think both sides of the family would get into an old fashioned wedding?" and "would they like to bring their favorite dishes?"

  9. QUESTION:
Cheap weddings? How can my freind who is 20 years old plan her wedding very cheaply?
please give any ideas or suggestions that would help save money. Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
Location - a back yard or free outside area - or the church may have a room to use free or cheap.

Wedding invitations and the wedding dress are huge expenses. There are ways to cut the costs on both. Understandably brides want to look beautiful, and they want a dress equally beautiful. Still, make wise decisions. Purchasing a wedding gown for several hundreds or thousands of dollars is not wise when you're working with little funds. When you walk down that aisle no one is going to know – or care- if you spent 0 for your dress, or 00. Be sensible. Lovely, less expensive gowns are available. Bridal gown rental is also an option. This is worth considering because many bridal gowns are never worn a second time. Hence you spend tons of money on a gown, and then it hangs in the closet for years.

NYC's FirenzeJewels.com Announces Launch of New Bridal Section

New York City, NY (PRWEB) October 18, 2007

Firenze Jewels (http://firenzejewels.com), one of New York City's leading family-owned jewelry companies, has announced the addition of a new bridal jewelry section to their website. The section features informative articles and will focus on four primary categories: engagement rings, wedding bands, diamonds and general bridal jewelry (such as earrings and necklaces).

In the bridal section, Firenze Jewels will feature both traditional favorites and changing trends in bridal jewelry materials and design. Examples include:

      • Classic and antique engagement ring/wedding ring styles

The antique style wedding ring is very much in fashion...

      Do-It-Yourself-Ideas
Homemade wedding invitations and favors will also cut your wedding expenses. Anyone who has ever ordered wedding invitation can attest to how expensive they cost. The good thing is that invitations can be easily printed at home using invitation kits. Kits are available at office supply stores and print stores. The only requirement is a computer, printer, and an imagination. Those missing an imagination can consult online or print wedding guides for ideas on how to word invitations. Parting gifts for guests are customary at weddings. Some couples give nice favors such as candle holders, picture frames, etc. A great parting gift that is simple, cheap, and fun are Hershey kisses wrapped in tulle fabric. Gather four or five kisses, wrapped them in tulle, tie a cute colorful ribbon, and call it a day. These can be passed out to guests as they leave the reception. Experience has taught me that food gifts are always a hit with guests.

      Lower Decorating Expense
Decorations are essential for weddings – these often determine whether your ceremony and reception was nice. Typical wedding decorations include flowers, balloons, centerpieces, and candles. A theme wedding may incur additional decorating expenses. Couples who are on a budge should keep decorations simple. Decorating for an indoor or outdoor home wedding does not require much. Flowers are the key. Tall decorative plants, colorful potted plants, and vase flowers add a simple elegance. Two tall plants could be decorated with white lights. The couple may recite their vows standing between these tall plants. Dress tables and shelves with candles and flowers. A white carpet sprinkled with flower petals could be laid on the floor to mark the bride's path. Centerpieces for tables could be as simple as a candle and handle holder positioned on top of a 12-inch flat mirror. These items can be purchased cheap from closeout stores or online retailers. White or colored linen tablecloths add a nice touch.

Having an inexpensive wedding does not make you a cheapskate, especially if you do not have the means for a lavished one. If anything, these weddings say that a couple is financially reasonable. Weddings are just the beginning. Couples should be able to enjoy the wedding without being burden by a large debt hanging over their heads.

For super saving, potluck food dishes can be organized, a friend can take digital pictures, and another friend can take are of music - even if just mix tapes.

  14. QUESTION:
    Cheap Weddings done right?
What do you think is the most important stuff to focus your money on when planning on a tight budget? I've been to weddings that were on a budget and thought they spent the money in the wrong places. For instance one I went to spent all the money on the food and didn't have any decorations at all. Another was all decorations and little food. I'd like to have a happy middle. I found a place that I can get a nice cake at and I figure to save money we can have the cake be nice but a little smaller and use sheet cakes which are cheaper for the rest. We also plan on inviting just a few friends and mostly family. I've also seen people on a budget make the mistake of inviting everyone they have ever met and when all the people decided to come they were screwed because they really couldn't afford that many but had to feed and find a place big enough for all of them. If you had a cheap wedding where you did most of the stuff yourself or found ways to cut corners but still had a wedding that looked like a million bucks let me know what you did. Also if you have pictures that would be great. Thanks.
I want the type of wedding where people go wow this must have cost a ton how did they afford it all and then when they find out the price are like wow there is no way you could have done all this for that cheap. I'm pretty much like that with everything. I'm a cheap shopper and love to find deals.
The one I'm referring to about the all food no decorations deal the meal was over a person (they told us that) so I figured they could have cut down to say a person and had a few candles or flowers or something. The place wasn't really pretty so it was kind of blah otherwise. Plus they way over guessed on the people and had enough leftovers for about a week for themselves and sent stuff home with all of us too (we had at least three days). The bottom layer of the cake wasn't even touched. If they would have planned better they wouldn't have wasted money on all the extra food and cake and could have had a few decorations.

    • ANSWER:
In all honesty, most people do not go "wow - this must have cost a ton" at a wedding. I've attended three weddings in the last 6 months, all were conservative, yet beautiful. If you have 10 guests, you will have 10 ideas of what is a great wedding. If you have 100 guests, you will have 100 opinions of what makes a great wedding.

Do what makes you happy. In my opinion, the MOST important part is to make your guests feel welcome and to sincerely let them know you are glad they were able to attend. That requires taking the time to speak with your guests individually. A wedding in a barn or the porch of an old shack could be wonderful if everyone is happy and hospitable.

  15. QUESTION:
I have a lot of weddings to attend this summer and need a cheap rental car situation. Any suggestions?
I don't want to rent a car for 6 weekends this summer... is there some kind of cheap way to rent a car or some kinda of community rental car company that I can enroll in in Chicago?

    • ANSWER:
You can get a great rate through the name your own price feature on priceline. You're guarenteed to get one of the major rental places at the airport.

Start around the range. I've had success solidifying rentals for as low as /day on the weekend.

You can also find coupon codes for discounts at retailmenot.com.

      Good luck!

  16. QUESTION:
I am looking for a church/venue that performs weddings for free or really cheap in oklahoma city?

  17. QUESTION:
    Any tips on cheap weddings?
My sister and her fiance really want to get married next summer. They don't have a ton of money, and the family probably won't help out all that much.
I am the maid of honour, so my job is to help plan.
Mission #1 finding ways of having a cheap wedding. Maybe no more than 00? And maybe 75 people.
    Thank you for your help.

    • ANSWER:
-Check and see if your local church will give you a discount if you have the wedding on a Sunday (the church will already be open) or a Friday. Or just to give you a deal if you currently go to church and are involved and they understand your dilemma
-Carnations for flowers and lots of greenery. Leaves, ivy, baby's breath, etc... are cheaper than flowers and can fill out centerpieces and bouquets more than with only flowers. Carnations may be cheap but when bunched together you hardly notice
-Silk Flowers for button holes, corsages, and centerpieces
-Find someone on Craigslist with a decent camera to do the photography for no more than a couple hundred. May not be professional but getting an unbiased party with a steady hand is just as effective sometimes
-Have the reception during the afternoon so that they're not supplying for meals but small appetizers throughout the night.
-Shop around for a cheap place to hold a reception for 75 people. I recently found a room in a church building for less than 0 and it can hold 75 people.
-Look for your wedding dress on Craigslist be prepared that it won't be new but that doesn't make it any less gorgeous
-realize that most people won't even see your shoes.. buy a pair of sensible white sneakers so that you can wear out of them later.
-Go to a makeup counter at your local department store and get them to do your make up and take notes on how they do it so you can do it to yourself on your wedding day.
-Bring in a friend to do your hair for you. Just do curls and a poof on the top of your head and it'll look brilliant
-Forgo the alcohol. May not be as fun but if you wanted to go back home after the wedding and enjoy yourself some more with your closer friends and family and a glass of wine or two that can still be fun.

      GOOD LUCK!!

  18. QUESTION:
How to plan a cheap wedding?
So my family in GA and he has family in NC. Everyone is spread out every where. And I was thinking of having two little cheap weddings, but I am not sure. I don't care much for huge weddings. I love the simple small things in life. But where do you get started in planning little weddings that happen in both states?

    • ANSWER:
Honestly, the best thing you can do to save money is to have only one celebration. We have a similar situation and what we did was found somebody with a bed and breakfast and ask to take over the whole house... and then we opened it up to tons of people who are traveling. Couples get bedrooms, but younger people can sleep on couches or on the floor and that way the ones who are least able to afford a hotel room don't have to worry about finding one.

The other big tip is save money on a venue... by not paying for one, or by finding a cheap one. My town has a town green, so I called the city and asked how much it was to have the green for the day. It was only 0! If you live near the beach in GA or NC, consider a beach wedding, which is usually free (but do check with the city council to make sure).

If you want a really informal and intimate vibe, you can ask people to consider bringing a covered dish instead of a wedding gift for you. This suggestion is definitely not for every bride! Nonetheless, one of the most fun weddings I've ever been to was a "potluck" wedding.

  19. QUESTION:
    cheap weddings places and ideas?
most likey in pennsylania or just online

    • ANSWER:
I suggest your own or a friend's backyard (if anyone you know has a decent one!). My husband and I got married at a friends gorgeous house overlooking vineyards. I guess you really have to know people with great homes, though. If not, gardens and parks are great ideas. Any place that naturally looks beautiful is a great thing, then you don't have to decorate as much or pay for as many flowers!

  20. QUESTION:
Cheap but affective ideas foe beach weddings?
I'm not an arty crafty person so, please dont suggest to difficult tasks, but any ideas or suggestions would be most welcomed. :.)

    • ANSWER:
Michael's Crafts has their lighted arch on sale this week for , at least they do here. It goes together quite easily. Since you will be on the beach you won't be using the lights, but with about 16 yds of tulle...JoAnn's ( or other fabric chain) will start having their sale of 2yds/. Weave or wire that to the arch & you have a beautiful focal point for your ceremony.

Me and my man planned to get married in Aug 2009 but my gran has been diagnosed with lung cancer and given months to life she has finished her chemo now and going on to radium she is coping really well and not sure how long she has left but i would like to pull the wedding forward incase she doesnt last till next year. • ANSWER:
Can you give some more specific details about where you are located? How many guests you were thinking about, etc?
The best advice I could give you in regards to finding a venue is to go to your local city websites and look under the parks and recreations department. You can usually find nice park, hall and community center rentals for a fairly cheap price. Most of the time they will let you bring in outside catering, so you may be able to do the food yourself - which can save a lot of money.

Hotels near by would be a plus for sure.

Check out Mercury Hall in Austin: http://www.mercuryhall.com/. I attended a wedding there. It's a very quaint little building that used to be an old chapel, and the grounds are quite pretty. It's also very affordable.

You'll spend less than 00 for sure, though you may need to rent some additional tables, chairs, an arch, etc. Check out Marquee Rents (more choices) and Austin Party Central (more affordable).

  25. QUESTION:
Alternative Weddings Ideas (Cheap and Fast PLEASE)?
So, my boyfriend and I want to get married on January 16, 2008 (yep next month...)

We want SMALL (just us, officiant and witnesses), CHEAP (he is saving, I am studying and working part time, nobody's parents are making contributions, we want to keep costs to a minimum...ie, I am not going to be buying any wedding dress, wedding cape or flowers or anything, NO DESTINATION WEDDINGS.....AND I don't WANT to PLAN WEDDING STUFF....)

We both agreed to wanting to get married in the great outdoors and selected a beach in Rhode Island....

but I want some alternate ideas, since maybe, the parking/road to the beach doesn't get plowed, or we can't find a brave officiant....

We know we could go to court, or Niagara Falls, but we want something BEYOND LOW KEY that reflects our style. (not those "wedding package style" at Niagara Falls)

I need some alternative wedding ideas...(other than court and Vegas styles....) We are LOW KEY....

Please, any help would be greatly appreciated!
We don't want to travel at all! He lives in Rhode Island, and I live in Montreal. We want to keep the distance within a day trip genre...I would prefer to go down to his state for the actual "wedding"

    • ANSWER:
Have it at someones home. You can have the wedding and reception all in the same place. Since it is just after Christmas you could use garland and Christmas lights to decorate with white Christmas lights. All the food you could do yourself if you have a Sam's Club or Costco membership. Just make it finger foods. Enlist some friends to help out and get everything ready. Pre-order a cake or several cakes different sizes and then put them together and decorate it with ribbon and fresh flowers for the wedding cake.

Simple, small and not a lot of money.

  26. QUESTION:
    Good, cheap San Francisco weddings?
My pudding-pie and I are looking to be married, and I've recently remembered that weddings are totally boring. Also, I want to buy a house soon and don't want to spend a billion dollars. We both really love San Francisco, and we think it creates a nice balance: it's a "destination" wedding so people don't have to come if they don't want to, but it's cheap enough that if someone really wants to be present (for a boring wedding), they can.

So I'm looking for cheap wedding suggestions. *I* would just be happy with our parents and maybe four friends, having a quiet ceremony and then going out for a pricey meal at the folks' expense, but to humour my sentimental husband-to-be, I'll consider larger ceremonies as well.

Again, the cheaper the better -- and I'm not exactly hung up on typical Bridezilla priorities or traditions. I won't have a wedding gown or anything, no matter how big the ceremony is. (Also worth mentioning, I suppose, that I have an ENORMOUS family and that if the ceremony opens up, it opens up by alot. Keeping it small and intimate means affordability AND tact.)

TL;DR version: cheap wedding options in San Francisco.

    • ANSWER:
City Hall, City Hall, City Hall!!!!…… I can hardly see anything beating this place as a pretty, cheap and majestic venue for wedding!! Last summer, one of my best friends hosted her wedding ceremony here…incredible, fantastic, gorgeous… I even dream of a nice wedding here too:)…Moreover, this famous venue is quite easy to access via public transportation, so your guests can get here without any hassle…Professional event staff will help you with every detail about your big day. This venue can accommodate up to 200 guests. So no matter which kind of size your wedding is, City Hall will perform well. So I think either your “sentimental” husband-to-be or yourself would love this place.

As you need “cheap”, City Hall provides Wedding Packages to make your wedding of great value. This package contains 2 hour rental on Saturdays before 3pm, 200 folding chairs, 3 tables, 1 custodian, 1 event manager, 1 engineer, 1 deputy sheriff and insurance for up to 200 guests. The price of this package is just ,000. Let City Hall take care of everything of your wedding and you just need to enjoy the process. http://www.sfgsa.org/index.aspx?page=988

If you are hungry for more choice, here are a few came up with:
Crissy Fields, Palace of Fine Arts, UC Berkeley Botanical Garden, the Presidio Chapel of Our Lady….

Anyway, I hope you can have a sweet, happy, exceptional, memorable…..wedding!!!!

  27. QUESTION:
Are pot luck weddings cheap and selfish?
Unless it's a group or routine event, I can't understand hosting anything where food isn't provided - especially a wedding! I understand financial restraints but honestly, who is so financially strapped that they can't scrape together enough money (typically over a period of many months) to at least make some pasta or something. Not to mention - you're most likely going to get cash gifts that will reimburse you for at least some, if not all of the cost of cheap food.

Can someone who is a pot-luck wedding supporter please explain to me how this isn't cheap and selfish? I have several people trying to push this idea on me, and I honestly can't wrap my mind around it.

    Thanks!
Sorry, I don't mean to bash - it's just the best way to word it to get the answers I'm looking for (you proved that by giving me a good answer, so thanks!)....I'm honestly trying to get people to help me to see it their way so I can be more open minded about this.

    • ANSWER:
It's all about managing expectations. If the majority of your guests live nearby, you can have a potluck without being rude; contact the few guests who are traveling and let them know what they could bring in lieu of a homecooked dish. What's really important, however, is that you make it clear to the guests that they aren't expected to bring gifts. Typically, guests bring a gift in return for a meal and drinks; if you aren't providing a meal, you shouldn't accept any gifts (other than the gift of food and celebration, that is). There's nothing inherently wrong about a potluck reception, and it can be a really fun event if managed correctly.

  29. QUESTION:
    Do Buffet Weddings scream CHEAP?
    trying to feed 400 guests....

I thought it would be cheaper to do buffet-style dinner, but it loses the convenience (and elegance) of a 'beef-or-chicken' type of dinner that is served to each guest.

would it be too chaotic to have 400 guests lined up to get food?

    thoughts?

    • ANSWER:
There is nothing cheap about a buffet dinner- in fact, whenever I am a guest at a wedding I prefer a buffet, because then I can have as much or as little of everything I want, instead of having to choose just one entree and one side dish. I really don't like those weddings where they make you choose between 2 different entrees, like chicken or beef, 6 weeks in advance- how on earth are you supposed to know what you're going to want for dinner 6 weeks in advance? I would always go with the buffet.

If you are worried about a crazy long line and lots of chaos with a 400-guest wedding, I suggest you do something called "stations." Have several different stations, like a salad station, appetizer station, meat station, etc. set up in different areas of your reception venue. That will spread out the guests and make the lines at each station much more manageable than just one long line at a single buffet table.

  32. QUESTION:
Weddings: Whats the one thing you DON'T go cheap on?
    Food?
    Flowers?
    The Dress?
    Invitations?
    Photographer?
    DJ?

Just curious as to what you shouldn't go cheap on!

    • ANSWER:
For guests - FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT.
      For yourself - PHOTOGRAPHER.

Your guests won't notice matching napkins & chair sashes that coordinate with the carpeting of your reception venue - - they WILL notice if your food & entertainment are lousy, cheap, or just plain bad.

And you will want photos of your wedding to be done well. BUT even then you don't have to pay an arm & a leg to have them done. Just don't rely on Uncle Jimmy to steer clear of the bar to take your pics - - DO pay someone.

  35. QUESTION:
Why are cheap, simple weddings "unacceptable" in the UK these days?
I first got married at 22 - in a registry office - and we spent no more than £300 on the whole thing. People I knew were so shocked

"OH I could NEVER do that, my mum would be HEARTBROKEN, she really wants me to have a big white wedding" blah blah drone drone

I'm about to get married again - registry office again - and we're spending maybe £1,000 tops on it all.

And again - same shock and disgust from my colleagues - I actually have to lie and pretend that our wedding rings are costing more than they are because of the disgusted looks I'd get if I told them we're getting £50 ones from Argos, lol . . .one girl I work with boasted incessantly about how she wouldn't get engaged unless her bf got her a ring costing AT LEAST £3,000 . . .

Why the snobbery? Why does a wedding HAVE to cost £20,000 or its somehow not seen as meaningful or valid? God knows, precious few people get married in the UK these days - if it wasn't so "shameful" to do it cheaply more might be tempted. From my experience, the cost alone puts a lot of people off the thought of marriage.

No wonder we're all up to our armpits in debt in this country . . .
We're not even having a reception as we can't afford it and our "guests" (family and friends) will understand this. We're just all going for a pub lunch afterward the ceremony. Terribly sorry if that "offends" our "guests" - this is probably why we only invited close friends/family who would understand and just be happy we're getting married. We aren't in the position of indulging greedy people who expect us to spoil them when we can't afford to.

Lol Caicos - going abroad, what with air fares etc is still really expensive!!! I think you've missed my point. Why can't people just be satisfied with the local registry office and a home-made buffet or meal afterwards?! Like they used to! When did getting married become something which has to cost £1,000s?
Our cash is all tied up in our mortgage and a lot of expensive home improvements which we need to have done. Far more important than chucking money at a fancy wedding.

    • ANSWER:
I think your attitude is spot on. Why waste money on that you will need to buy and never use again, I understand dresses can cost up to £2-3,000 which is absurd. Plus bridesmaids. What do you do with these clothes after the 'big day'. Then you get sucked into the church and you pay to decorate it and then the reception. It seems fashionable to have the reception and the rest of the days frivolities in a grand house style hotel, where the guests can stay over night (at their expense) but what about the food at the reception, the drink and after all that there is another crowd arrive for the evening reception, DJ more booze and nibbles. Total cost, well not much change out of £30,000. If you have that sort of money and most of us don't, then you are better off using for yourselves in your new married live and not try and out do the previous wedding you went to. Good on yer!

  36. QUESTION:
Stressing out about $$ - how do people pull off "cheap" weddings?
We are getting married on the beach in June of 2010. We are inviting around 130 people and having it on an Inn a block away from the ocean. We want a white tent reception, a good bar, and nice food - but nothing amazingly spectacular. Center pieces will be made by us (sand, candles, etc) and things like that. However, we're finding that with a site fee, tent rental, and food for 130 people we're already up to about ,000. How is this possible?

My parents had said ,000 was their budget, which I thought would be plenty and now we're just shocked.

How much was your wedding, roughly? And where did you cut the most costs? Guest list can't be made smaller (mostly family).

    So frustrating....
I'm all about saving money people - but hamburgers and dogs and students from the local deli catering my wedding (my once in a lifetime day)???? I don't think so.
I totally understand people being frugal (I'm thinking of ways to cut costs - it'll probably be around ,000) - but this isn't some backyard bbq...this is my wedding day

    • ANSWER:
Part of the problem might be the setting that you have chosen. Just because it is a once in a lifetime thing, you also have to remember that it is not about the wedding, it is about the marriage and about sharing your joy with those you love.

My wedding was very simple but not tasteless. We had it in a small church that charged only a couple of hundred to rent it for the afternoon and the reception was in the Church hall behind the Church. We had a friend cater it by making mastacholi, and a few other full pan type of dishes along with various salads. It was a buffet style which does cut down on costs. We also had a simple cake that was 4 tiers but not overly fancy. We did not have dancing at the reception which cut out the cost of paying a D.J. or a band. I also bought my wedding dress at a resale shop and it was lovely. I only had to pay 350 for it! Decorations can be purchased at Dollar Tree. If you don't like what one has, go to a different one. Some stores stock their wedding area better than others. I tend to get table covers and serving pans along with mints for the table from Gordon foodservice. They also carry some boxed salads which make life very simple. (Obviously use a nice serving bowl to set them out)

The bottom line is that you have a budget and you might have to sacrifice some of what your ideals of your wedding day are to keep it under budget. ,000 is not really a lot when you consider all that is going into a wedding day. Try to remember that this is about being with the one you love and spending your life together. This is your day but it is your day to share your joy with your loved ones. This is the most important part.

    • ANSWER:
There's lots of things you can do - cut your dress cost down & buy off the rack, skip the DJ & do an I-pod reception, skip the favors (who needs them), print your own invites, choose an "all in one" location for ceremony & reception - maybe self-cater, try to cut down on flowers - even use silks for your bouquets. Use a friend as a photog or get one off Craig's list. Get a cake made by a friend or from the grocery store. Just figure out what's important to you & what's not - and plan accordingly. Good luck!

    cheap rentals for ny weddings?
hi, i'm renting Everything! from a large tent, to flatware and linens! do any of you know of a cheap rental store? I live in nyc.
    thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Best wishes on your upcoming wedding and marriage. I am not from NYC, and can't help you with that. But I do want to tell you that sometimes you can buy the things you are planning to rent cheaper. I bought my daughter's flatware at our local dollar store for less than the cost to rent it was. I made the linens for less also. Try Ebay and do you have a SAM's club. I never did a see a Walmart when visiting your wonderful city. But buyer clubs are wonderful for wedding shopping. We had a ,000 wedding on a ,000 budget. We worked our butts off, and I enlisted friends and family members for different projects, but it was beautiful. We had a girl's night with strawberry daquaris and wrapped silverware. White russians one night and we made favors, My friends gave my daughter a personal shower and we ended up having a ball doing the bird seed bags. I order alot of stuff online. There is so many cost cutting ideas, it take imagination and researching, but well worth it. You are doing the right thing about asking for help with renters, because someone might know of somewhere you can just rent everything together in one lump some. I hope to get back to NYC one day, I took my daughter there for New Year's Eve right before the big day. It was quality time for just us, God bless us all.....

PS...two bits of advice from a Mother who had 5 daughters....get a notebook...and start you a list of everything that needs to be done...I mean everything from picking out napkins, questbook to hiring a band. It's never too early to start calling for a appointments. Everytime you do something on your list--cross it off. This is what saved my mind, my trusty always had it handy notebook...I felt like I was making progress everything I got to mark another chore off that list.
Second peice of advice.....don't forget this is YOUR and the man you are marrying most happy special day. Make it something very special for each of you, but don't go so over board that you are so tried, frustrated, and just don't care anymore that you don't enjoy the day! Pamper yourself a little!

    Cheap but nice weddings....?
What was the cheapest budget you spent on a wedding that was nice and turned out great? Do you have any money saving ideas?
(Trynna find a way to save money but have a nice wedding).
Thanks in advance for any advice.

    • ANSWER:
All of the above are great ideas. Here are just a few to add that I used in my wedding:

Candles make any wedding look more elegant. I went to the local candle store and bought a bunch of tea light candle holders and candles. They were MUCH cheaper at the craft store.

Believe it or not but Wal-Mart has a HUGE wedding section. They have everything from bubbles, to disposable cameras, to wedding invitations. I was totally surprised.

I've been to a few weddings recently that they didn't have a formal sit down dinner, they had a dessert reception. They made cupcakes, cakes and other goodies. They served coffee and a few different punches. It was a blast. No alcohol=no drama. HA HA

Also, might I suggest getting your dress at a re-sale shop? They have some really great designer dresses and they are so easily altered at any alterations shop for a small fee.

Good luck and have fun! There are so many DIY books out there it's great!

How can i promote my new photography business for cheap prices or for free?
Hi everyone does anyone have any creative ideas on how i promote my photography business for cheap prices or for free? I do weddings, location shots, product, events and corporate. I just want to know how i can get the publics attention?

    • ANSWER:
Put it this way. If it is free, it wont be any good. I've run several businesses, and have tried the lot - plus worked with many businesses like yours. You need to look at effective - and this can be cost effective (in other words cheap when you compare it to the results you generate, rather than simply cheap). A campaign that costs you and gets you no results has cost you . A campaign that costs you 0 and earns you 00 hasn't cost you anything.

A simple hint here - you DON'T WANT the 'publics' attention. You DO WANT the attention of people who are going to spend money with you - that is a key difference.

from experience in marketing service sector businesses, the most cost-effective tools (provided you have your target market and aims properly sorted) are: 1. direct mail with telemarketing follow up, 2. Networking, 3. referrals.

To use these you need to do quite a bit of work, but it is so worth while. It doesnt take long or cost much to implement if you do it right.

I'm looking for a site in southern Florida but so far all I've found are sites that include things for the wedding party and/or guests. It'll just be my fiance and I going, so we're trying to find something very intimate just for us. If anyone has ANY info, PLEASE let me know as soon as you possibly can!
