  3. QUESTION:
Can you hem and take off the train on a lace wedding dress?
If the dress is made of lace all the way to the bottom and has a short lace train, how hard would it be to remove the train and/or hem the bottom of the dress? Could an experienced seamstress do this?

    • ANSWER:
Do you have a picture of the dress? My dress has a TON of beading and as with a lace dress, I thought it would be impossible to hem. Most gowns are made in such a way that they can in fact be hemmed. Dress makers know that people vary in height. Mine was able to be taken up at the waist. The dress that you are considering may not be able to be taken up at the bottom, but that doesn't mean that it can't be hemmed.

  4. QUESTION:
Can you have a lace wedding dress altered?

yes... you can take it to Davids Bridal and have it professional altered.

  5. QUESTION:
What does everyone think about a black lace wedding dress?
if the wedding is in sept, oct time?? is it too gothic? not getting married on halloween, just love the fall colors and black feels much more me...... but not too sure how the family will react.....

    • ANSWER:
I wouldn't totally do an all black lace wedding dress ( but that is me personally). What you could do is have a white one but add black in little areas of the dress to make it feel more you. An example you can have a black lace belt/sash that ties in the back. Or add black lace and beading on the dress in areas by your bust and down by the end of the dress. Also remember it is your wedding day and if you want a black lace dress go for it, whatever you decide to do your family should just be happy to celebrate your special day with you. Good Luck on your dress and inyour wedding, best wishes!!

      Dear Theresa,
Sorry, you are stuck. You can't dye a synthetic satin dress, & even if it were rayon or silk, it would be very difficult to move it from silver to dark red.

Can I wear white shoes with an ivory wedding dress?
I found a pair of really cute white shoes online but my dress is ivory. Do my shoes need to match my dress or is it okay if the color is different?I would be very careful about wearing white shoes. Usually the rule is - the shoes need to be a darker shade than the dress. This is because if the shoes are lighter, the contrast is too great. Sort of like putting florescent yellow against a regular yellow. You could definitely try it out, especially if your ivory dress is a bit closer to...

  17. QUESTION:
Are white wedding dresses becoming old fashioned?
I just ordered a white lace wedding dress. I did try on the antique ivory version of the dress but the darker lace did not look flattering with my skin tone. When I told some of my friends that I went with white they told me it was too traditional and I should have gone with ivory or champaign. Now I'm starting to have doubts about my purchase. Is white becoming old fashioned?

    • ANSWER:
I don't think white is old fashioned. It's traditional, but not outdated. I assumed I would always wear a white dress, but then when I tried on some white ones and an ivory and champagne one, I realized that my skintone and hair color just look better in the ivory/champagne color...plus, I am not a very traditional person, so the color works for me.

However, the main thing is that it's a choice. Today women have the choice to wear white, pink, ivory, blue, gold...whatever color they want to get married in. If you love your white dress, then that's awesome! You found *the* dress for you! Don't go back on your choice because someone told you it was outdated.

And...on the brightside...you will have a much easier time finding accessories and decorations than I did. It is much easier to find white wedding things than ivory or champagne.

  18. QUESTION:
Help, my lace wedding dress is terribly stained!?
I bought a Monique lhuillier dress at a sample sale and it's been in the closet for the last 5 months... I took it out last night to check it and the bottom of the dress is suddenly grey and dirty. I had it stored in the plastic wedding bag that they gave me and I realize now I should have had it washed the day I brought it home.
Will I beable to get these stains out or is the dress ruined!!!!

    • ANSWER:
      Wedding Dress Cleaning
Wedding dress manufacturer´s recommend that wedding dresses be dry cleaned. You may be able to clean it yourself, but you would likely lose some of the lustre. It´s worth the extra money to have the dress professionally cleaned and have wonderful memories for years to come. Also, the cost of cleaning is much cheaper than replacing a ruined dress. Check at local bridal shops in your area to see if they can recommend a cleaner who specializes in bridal gowns. However, if you are willing to take a chance you can gently wash your dress in Woolite in the bathtub then let it air dry. Stuff it with acid-free tissue paper and store it in a 100% cotton garment bag or wrapped in 100% cotton sheets that have been rinsed with distilled water. If you choose to store it in an acid-free cardboard box, you'll need to change the box every three to five years since cardboard is absorbent and even acid-free boxes can re-acidify over time. Store it in a cool, dry place (so no hot attics or damp basements).Good Luck!!! =)

  31. QUESTION:
The edging on a lace wedding dress is curling - how can I correct this?
lace is machine embroidered and lightly beaded

    • ANSWER:
Lightly spray some starch or fabric stiffener on it, cover it with a clean sheet, and then put pillows or something heavy on it to flatten it, until it dries.

You can also use elmers glue, or any fabric glue, by brushing it on with a cotton swab.

Many people are surprised to find out that dress designers use glue a lot on their dresses. Fabric glues are specially formulated for fabrics.

  35. QUESTION:
Can you alter a wedding dress to have a lace up back?
I have a wedding dress that has buttons (for show) and a zipper. I would like for the seamstress to take all of that out and put in a lace up back. Is that possible??

    • ANSWER:
Yep. My prom dress was button up and since it was a smidge tight (I have a large chest lol) the seamstress offered to remove the buttons and zipper and put in a lace-up back. I ended up having her take out the seems a little because I loved the buttons but had I chosen to have the zipper taken out she said it would have cost me around - which considerng the price of a wedding/prom dress, isn't too bad for alterations.

  36. QUESTION:
Which shoes for a lace wedding dress?
Background info: I have an off white wedding dress with a lacy bottom, need thicker heels because it's an outdoor wedding, and the heel needs to be 3 1/4 inches high. My question is, should I wear open toed or closed toed shoes? It's almost impossible to find off white closed toed shoes with a heel that is not a stiletto. I was told by the bridal consultant to not wear open toed shoes because I risk catching the lace on the bottom of the dress under my toes. Has anyone had this problem?

    • ANSWER:
I had a garden wedding at Villa Montalvo in the oval garden. I wore off-white pumps as my dress was off white. I would suggest that you wear close toed shoes rather than wear open toed shoes and risk a mishap of falling on your special day.

  37. QUESTION:
What color and type of shoe should I wear with this silver lace dress to a wedding?
    Here is the dress: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2953245?siteId=AHfhQmyA4L4-B8eGECPqDIFfENZuquJXrw

I looked all over for shoes today and couldn't find much... tried Nordstrom, Macy's, Nine West, nothing. I ended up finding some stilletto strappy shoes in a very pale pink shade (which matches the pink/nude color underneath the silver lace.

But, what do you think would go well? Type and color of shoe? Would black pumps be acceptable?

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Maybe not black shoes... I think what would be cute would be a flat or even maybe a cute heel a great color for it would be silver kind like color!!! or even a white!

  38. QUESTION:
Buttons or Lace up back wedding dress?
I'm having my wedding dress made but undecided as to whether I should choose buttons or lace up for the back. Its a mermaid style strapless dress. Any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
Strapless mermaids are my favorite style! I'd definitely recommend a lace-up. It adds to the elegance of a mermaid and looks fantastic. :)

  39. QUESTION:
wearing a lace up wedding dress?
I have DD boobs and I want to wear a lace up wedding dress. Would I be able to wear a lace up corset with it? Or what would I have to do?? So it didnt look tacky
I have a lace up corset in my closet. thats why i am asking

    • ANSWER:
I also have DD boobs & wore a lace up corset back, strapless dress. I ended up not wearing a bra or anything because the dress was so well made I didn't need to wear one.

One bit of advice though ~ when I went in to get measurements for my dress, they had a bra lady there to fit me with a bra. The idea was she would do the "right" bra measurement for me, sell me a bra & then take my measurements for the dress while I was wearing the bra. It sounded okay and I didn't mind spending the money because I thought this would get me the right undergarments to wear with the dress. It ending up being a *huge* mistake though! The lady didn't really carry anything in my size, and sold me this support bra that also covered my stomach (that was the only thing she had for such big boobs) The garment was uncomfortable & had so much fabric.... I ended up not wearing it with my dress after all the money I spent on it.

So, just make sure that when you go in for your fitting, take a strapless bra with you ~ just in case. But really, as everyone has said, a lot of the better dresses have so much support & the lace up backs are so well done that you don't need a bra. Just depends on how it is made. Good luck to you! =)

I had a dream I was in a peach lace wedding dress?
I didn't have a clear view around me in my dream, but I remember I was looking down at myself asking someone (I have a strong feeling it was my mother), "how does it look?". And the dress was lacey on top, light peach, and got slightly darker on the bottom and silky. I'm not the type of person to look up wedding dresses & I don't think about marriage often. I never thought about peach wedding dresses. Never. But it was one of my very few vivid and memorable dreams. I was wondering what this may mean ?
Marriage is still a long time away for me. lol.
It could have been a prom dress but it was very long (to the floor). & prom is next year too! but I don't plan on going.

Help with Sewing all over lace on my wedding dress.?
I am sewing my wedding dress, I am using Butterick B4131. My fashion fabric is satin and I am doing lace over it.

I need some tips to make sure that this comes out well. I am more concerned about the top. The skirt will be easy.

    • ANSWER:
Get hold of Susan Khalje's book, Bridal Couture -- there's an excellent chapter in there on working with laces, either as applique or as shaped sections. Or check her article in Threads, #88, April/May 2000.

Without knowing the type of lace or how you intend to apply or use it, I can only suggest getting hold of some very lightweight thread -- silk would be my choice as it practically disappears -- and using that as you're zigzagging or hand sewing the lace sections. I'd suggest Tire Silk 100Plus or Tire 50 wt:

  50. QUESTION:
Wedding dresses with sleeves a faux pas?
My mother was married in a beautiful pure white dress with tight lace sleeves (ended with a point over her hand). The dress had a medium length train, a corset style top and a V neck. It was covered in pearl and light blue beads, with soft blue ribbons woven through.

I would like to wear this dress to my wedding, but all the dresses I've seen in the stores are pretty plain and sleeveless. Is this dress out of style?

    • ANSWER:
Retro is in right now, and the dress sounds beautiful. A v-neck is so very flattering.
Would you choose a retro veil, too? Hope Mom still has hers, or some pictures so you could duplicate it.
I would wear the dress, and you are so lucky to get it and have it fit. The current style does not matter when you have an heirloom dress.
Oh, and pearl jewelry would be pretty, and very traditional.
And make a big deal over getting to wear your Mom's dress.
