Vintage Wedding Dress

Are you looking for different types of inexpensive vintage dresses? Finding an e-tailer with a wide selection of inexpensively priced vintage wedding dresses that you can be sure are in good condition is important because older dresses that you are unable to see might have more flaws that are noticeable. For this reason it is important to shop websites that have a good online reputation, provide you with a clear return policy and keep open communication before and after the transaction. The following shops are good choices for you to search for exquisite vintage style wedding gowns at inexpensive price.

The Frock

The Frock has perhaps one of the largest online selections of recent and antique vintage dresses from couture to designer dressmakers. Not only is there a huge collection of vintage wedding gowns, but mid century, flapper, WWII, celebrity and Victorian to Edwardian period dresses. Because of the exclusivity of many of the couture designs and designers represented in The Frock collection the prices are higher than other vintage wedding dress sites or shops, but there are several bargains and it is the best priced collection I could find for the quality and exclusivity represented.

Because most of the dresses are couture, sizes are very limited, but dress sizes are always very clearly labeled in every description. For the couture collection dresses range anywhere from 0-00, but there are several vintage pieces from designers like Oscar de la Renta, Givenchy, and Adolfo Sardia that are well priced. You can view the couture bridal collection at www.TheFrock.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Should I cleaned or altered a vintage wedding dress first?
    I have a beautiful vintage wedding gown for my upcoming wedding. Although the dress is in good condition it will need to be cleaned and altered. Which should I do first? I worry about fingerprints and the like if I clean it before alterations. I worry about dirty hems being sewn into the gown if it do the alterations first. Have any of you dealt with this. Do the tailor's ware gloves and I dont need to worry?

    • ANSWER:
      Clean it first, you may find that the cleaning didn't get out what you wanted, and then you are out all your alteration costs if you did them first - Plus, if something happens (say some beading or a button comes off) - you can have your seamstress fix that with the rest of the alterations.

      If you have a good seamstress, she won't touch your gown before washing her hands! My seamstress has a separate sewing room that no one goes past the threshold but her. She lays plastic on the floor and then washes her hands well before starting on a gown.

  7. QUESTION:

  8. QUESTION:
    How much would a 50's vintage wedding dress from Bergdorf Goodman be worth?
    Color of the dress is ivory.
    Beading on the dress is hand sewn.
    The material the dress is made of is organza/lace-y type of material.
    Comes with a hat that is beaded as well, where the veil was attached to as well.
    It is in good condition, in its original box.

    • ANSWER:
      Whatever someone else is willing to pay for it and not a penny more. These things have no real absolute value. It's not like a gold coin or something that can be calculated. What it's worth in this economy might be a whole lot less than what it was worth 10 years ago when people were spending like crazy. What it's worth in NY will be a whole lot different than what it's worth in Montana.

  9. QUESTION:
    Altering a vintage wedding dress?
    I am planning on wearing my Fiancee's grandmother's wedding dress. Some minor alterations are needed as she had a larger chest and smaller arms than me. Does anyone know of any reliable places for alterations around the Western to Central part of Oklahoma. The dress is well kept brocade silk.

    • ANSWER:
      The best way to find a qualified seamstress is to go to a fabric store and ask the ladies at the cutting counter if they can recommend someone who can help you. Avoid dry cleaner seamstresses. Although they are good at hemming and other alterations, they do not specialize and are unlikely to have experience in heirloom reconstruction. Ask everyone you know if they know a seamstress and you are bound to find someone to take the bust in and let the arms out or add gussets under the armcye. If you are unable to find someone local, you may have to expand your search into the nearest city.

      If the dress needs to be cleaned, please do so before bringing it to your seamstress. Sometimes old clothing falls apart when cleaned and the last thing you want to do is have and pay for this dress to be altered and have it fall apart during the dry cleaning process. Better to know what you have to work with before alterations, so do have the garment professionally dry cleaned, okay?

    What does it mean that a wedding dress is vintage but I can buy it from her?
    I asked a complete stranger on Facebook where she got her dress but I told her that I'm not engaged I just want a dress like that when I do get married.

    She said it's vintage but I can buy it off her. But I am poor. I'm sure that nice modest looking dress is worth more than 1k!

    I saw her in a wedding aisle dance video on Youtube

    • ANSWER:
      it just means that the dress is genuinely old....made in another era and that she is selling it. if you are not engaged, there is no point in buying a wedding dress. when you do become engaged, if you want a vintage wedding gown, there are plenty of places to buy them and they are not that expensive. just wait until you need one and then look up "vintage wedding gowns" or "vintage style wedding gowns" and you will see lots.

    I plan on having my dress made but I want to look at pictures of vintage gowns to get some ideas. I'm looking for ideas from the 1950's mainly. They don't need to be wedding gowns but just some ideas on how fancy gowns were cut back then.

  21. QUESTION:
    Need Sewing Pattern for Vintage Wedding Dress!?
    The era I'm looking for is late 1800's early 1900's.
    There is a gorgeous dress with a bustle in the window of a shop in Disneyland in Anaheim, CA that I would like to either find the pattern for or make one myself. Any good sites on making vintage dress patterns from scratch? - any help would be appreciated

    • ANSWER:
      i have a couple links that might be of use. First link has a few free patterns from the eighteen hundreds. http://www.tudorlinks.com/treasury/freepatterns/index.html

      Next, these guys make reconstruction clothing and they have good on line lessons on making a basic bodice block for pattern drafting. http://design.seamlyne.com/bodice/bodices.asp

      Making a pattern from scratch is difficult for someone without pattern drafting experience. Try one of the first site's patterns in scrap cloth and alter to fit. These dresses were drafted for the corseted figure, so you will need to make the waist larger. There are many commercial pattern available in historic dresses in almost all eras, from Ancient egypt to the 1950's and everything in between. They are a bit pricey, but the come with instructions, suggestions and they are drafted to fit the modern body. I highly reccomend following a pattern for something this ambitious.

  22. QUESTION:
    Redesigning a vintage wedding dress?
    My fiancee's grandmother wants me to wear her wedding dress which is brocade silk. I am looking at this but need to know more about what alterations can be made. Does anyone in the Oklahoma area (especially central western Oklahoma) know of a good trustworthy seamstress?

    • ANSWER:
      I agree with SugarCat. Do not wear this dress if you do not love it just to please your future in laws. Your trying to alter it is a sign that you do not like it as is. You owe it to yourself to keep looking until you find the dress that you want to wear. Gently tell Grandma that her dress may not be for you.

I have been looking for months but no tasteful success yet!
    Thank you!!

      bouquet
      http://shindigzparty.files.wordpress.com/2007/08/6w023t.jpg
      This is what I think of when I think of that time era.

      Have everyone dress up in vintage clothing, like 1950's sundresses and suits.

    wedding dress: vintage or vera wang?
    Im in such a fix and i dont know what to do...my bmaids etc arent being much help. I cant decide between two dresses i have for my wedding. I dont knw how to add images on here, so i will do my best to describe...i really could just do with an opinion.
    the vera wang one is ivory and similar to the diana dress...tight body, sweet heart neckline with ruffled organza around the bottom. very girly and contemporary.
    The other dress is an original early 60's vintage dress, its a tight almost hour glass dress with cap sleeves and an empire nipped in waist but with an unusal hobble skirt/train.
    my wedding is more towards the unusal/vintage style throughout, the dress is very hepburny and i know that no one else will have one or had one...it will really stand out.
    but at the same i dont want to look frumpy or like i got it from a charity shop or like the dress is too old for me and covers too much up...the wang is strapless and little more fun.
    im really upset because i cant choose...what do you think? without sounding too mushy my future husband is my best mate and it kills me that i cant ask him his opinion as he cant see it, i think thats why im caught up and getting upset because i could really do with his help right now!!x

    • ANSWER:
      The Vera Wang one sounds very romantic and sophisticated. It seems like a very pretty dress (the Diana dress is BEAUTIFUL!).
      On the other hand, the 60's vintage dress sounds very...vintage-y--but not very pretty...

      Well, it's your choice.

  35. QUESTION:
    Vintage wedding dress restoration. Seattle, WA.?
    I want to wear my grandmothers/mothers wedding dress for my wedding. It is in pretty bad shape though. Does anyone know of a good trust worthy place i could have it cleaned/restored in or near Seattle, WA?

    • ANSWER:
      I believe on Queen Anne hill at the top, right before the four way stop, there's a wedding restoration place on the right if you drive up the hill. My sister had my mothers dress restored there after it was attacked by mosquitos and a 4 year old. What kind of shape is it in? Torn? Miscolored? You can probably also find places in chinatown that you can have the dress re-created for you to wear and get your grandmothers preserved instead.

  36. QUESTION:
    Sizing question for wedding dress Help ASAP?
    I bought a vintage wedding dress it appears to be a size 10-11 in chinese. What is this in Australian?

    • ANSWER:
      I am not 100% sure, but i found a clothing size conversion chart online.
      http://www.asknumbers.com/ClothingWomensConversion.aspx

      It doesn't have China, but it has Japan so im not sure if they share the same measurements or not. It looks like if it would be size 11-12 in Australia according to the conversion chart.

      Sorry :(

  37. QUESTION:
    Anyone wear a vintage wedding dress?

    • ANSWER:
      Yep, I wore my mother's wedding dress. It had been hand made by my father's mother. Not only was it not what all the girls in the bridal magazines were wearing, it also held a kind of historical magic to it.

    I have been given a gift of a 1946 wedding dress. I am getting married soon, no date set, but engaged. I 1st wanted a 2009 sexy modern dress. But when I received this dress as a gift, I fell in love. The dress is in surprisingly okay shape, it just needs a lil help. Any ideas/experts you may know of. Help appreciated. Thank you =)

    • ANSWER:
      if you use yahoo's search feature to look for services like tailors or seamstresses, they have it set up so people can post reviews of places. so if you were to yahoo search for "seamstresses in inserttownhere" all sorts of stuff should come up and a lot of them may have reviews on them to kind of give you a feel for who does the best work. if they have a website, it will often give you some sort of indication of what kind of work they specialize in. from there you can pick and choose the best reviewed ones, then go scope them out in person. ask them questions like "do you have any expreince altering vintage wedding dresses?"

      my brother's now wife wore the same dress her grandmother wore. she found a great seamstress just by looking online and then going and interviewing them personally. the woman they found did a great job for a super low price, and the dress looked fantastic.

  40. QUESTION:
    Who is the best wedding dress designer for a vintage-style gown?
    I don't mean an old fashioned no frills gown. The designer I like presently are St. Pucchi, Ines Di Santo, Pronovias, San Patrick and La Sposa. I like them because they make lacy, vintage looking gowns. St. Pucchi is the best. Do you know of a designer that makes similar styles that are less expensive?

    • ANSWER:
      P.C. Mary's. Their gowns are romantic, princess-like, what you might call "old fashioned";

      http://www.marysbridal.com/

      If you want to find their gowns for less, you can find a lot of their discontinued styles at this site, though you need to make sure that you have the right size so that you don't have shipping or deadline troubles;

      http://www.juliusbridal.com/

      They also sell a few through this site, and you can find other gorgeous gowns in the styles that you like there too, for less money;

      http://www.preownedweddingdresses.com/

      Julius Bridal sometimes sells through eBay(that's how I got mine; http://www.preownedweddingdresses.com/buy/dresses/1453/), but when I checked today, they don't have anything offered right now. I'll include the link just in case;

      http://myworld.ebay.com/gowns_for_u

      Also try Searching on eBay for your favorite designers. Here's a St. Pucci Search;

      Pronovias;

      La Sposa;

      Ines Di Santo;

  42. QUESTION:
    How old is my vintage wedding dress?
    I've recently bought an absolutely beautiful old wedding gown. It's a pale ivory colour and very old looking. It's floor length with a long train and quite full skirt, with a fitted bodice and long, tapered sleeves. The neckline is high and square, and, like the waist, has very delicate green and white spray flowers sewn into it. It has a small side fastening of silver buttons. It is made of coarse silk and has some staining on the back and hem through age. It looks to me like it could be mid to late Victorian, though i'm not an expert and very roughly guessing. If anyone could shed some light on its age or perhaps has some better knowledge of this kind of thing i would be very grateful to hear your thoughts! Thank you :)

    • ANSWER:
      You would really just have to post a picture of the dress

  43. QUESTION:
    Where can I get a vintage wedding dress retored and transformed?
    I'm looking for someone in Toronto & GTA that can help me transform my mother's wedding gown so I can wear it for my wedding. Could you please point me in the right direction? I need a professional to do this for me and I don't know where to turn.
    The dress fits me perfectly which is shocking lol. But thanks I will check out portuguese seamstresses in DT. The dress was initially tailored by a Portuguese tailor too so I guess it fits.
    And yes have to check for quallifications as its a very very beautiful dress.

    • ANSWER:
      A seamstress who makes wedding dresses would be a start.

      To make it a different size requires someone who is adept at re-configuring patterns and she may have to add some material. If so, you can start shopping now for the fabric. (Downtown Toronto has a few really good Portuguese seamstresses. Start there)

      You may also want to 'update' by adding something that your mom didn't have: a different veil or headdress, a bolero jacket or shawl, a longer train, or more sequins, etc.

  44. QUESTION:

  45. QUESTION:
    What would be a good starting asking price for a vintage Alfred Angelo wedding dress?
    It's been worn twice, and was professionally cleaned and packed in 1992. I wish I had a pic scanned, or could remember the style name. It has a long scalloped edge train, lace chest area, scalloped choker neckline, 3/4 length sleeves that continue to the wrist in lace.
    I was thinking it wouldn't be worth the effort of selling it, might just donate it.

    • ANSWER:
      Gowns, even vintage ones, do not appreciate in value. (and 1992 is not exactly vintage.) So you could probably get what it was worth originally if it is in excellent condition but you won't get more than that. I agree you should research prices of gowns from that year resale and see what they are selling for. Places like Ebay, Craigslist and also online resale shops is where I would look!

      Good luck!

  46. QUESTION:
    Vintage Inspired Wedding Dress?
    Does anyone know any good websites where I can find a 30's, 40's or 50's inspired wedding dress? I'm not really interested in a custom made dress though, something I can order "off the rack" is prefered. Any suggestions would be helpful

    • ANSWER:

  47. QUESTION:
    Does anyone know of a website that sells cheap vintage wedding-like dresses?
    I'm looking for a wedding dress. Something very cheap under ,000 and oldies vintage, 1950s. Thank YOU!!

    • ANSWER:
      You might want to try Shiny Orb. They have a huge selection of dresses that you can browse through by style and stuff. Lots of different price ranges. You can check the white color selection for something that might work. Wedding dresses don't seem to be quite up yet, though. Still, you might find something cool in the bridesmaid section.

  48. QUESTION:
    Wedding dress ideas for a vintage themed wedding?
    I want a less expensive (under 0) dress that is not too dated, but would go well with our "vintage/farmhouse" themed wedding. I'm a pretty average shape, about 140 pound, 5'10''. I have a long torso, decent hips, not much of a butt. My boobs are a 34 C/ 32 D. Haha, I know this is a bunch of info but I'm so sick of looking for dresses that I hoped you guys would give me some help. I like lace...but now I am starting to shy away from it. (Although it could be fine.) I have back problems, so nothing too heavy and I hate trains. (A sweep train is enough for me.) Girls, help me with some links! Pleeeeease!!! : )

    • ANSWER:
      http://www.vintageglamblog.com may have ideas.

      http://www.dollycouture.net has a variety of vintage-looking dresses. Most are 50s styles but there are a couple that could work for other decades. http://www.stephaniejamescouture.com is vintage themed and you can get ideas there to take to a local seamstress but that designer isn't cheap by any means.

      Honestly though, trains aren't typically found on vintage dresses to begin with.

  49. QUESTION:
    My wedding dress is vintage style I have no idea how to do my makeup! thinking red lipstick any advice or pics?
    I have green/hazel eyes..dark reddish brown hair...light tan skin..and a few freckles.. my dress is ivory.. I will have a Dahlia in my hair..and long big curls in my hair....Please help!!!

    • ANSWER:
      What color is the dahlia? I say go natural for the makeup unless you usually wear red lipstick, then I'd say def go for it! Ok since I'm a makeup fanatic, I'll tell you what I think...sorry this is going to be kind of long!

      I recommend that you go to Sephora and get the following:

      ~Laura Mercier silk creme foundation (it is awesome and makes your skin look absolutely flawless)

      ~Tarte- natural beauty cheek stain. Get the dark red one. It gives you a pretty reddish flush that looks really enhances your skin and looks natural.

      ~Bronzer... I'd say either get a NARS bronzer or a Bare Minerals one. Not sure what your skin looks like, so its hard to say recommend one. But since your dress is ivory make sure you don't get anything too orange based because it will clash.

      ~Dior Show mascara (get waterproof if you plan on crying!) Your eyelashes will look amazing.

      ~As for lipstick.... this is a hard one because I haven't seen your picture, but make sure your lipstick doesn't clash with the dahlia. Example, if you are wearing a peach colored dahlia DON'T wear coral colored lipstick. So I would recommend getting a NARS "velvet matte lip pencil" It's basically looks like a big lip pencil but its actually more like lipstick. Buy a similar gloss to wear over it. You don't have to do that, but it will look very pretty. I have this in "Cruella" which is an awesome red color. I put on a veryy light coat of it yesterday, went out walking, went to the market, came home and it was still looked good.

      ~Eyeshadow.... MAC eyeshadow is AMAZING because they stays on forever and are so vivid and easy to blend. I also like Stila and NARS. I would get something with tawny colors, browns, taupes, light coppers, matte golds.... Just remember to balance your lips and your eyes. ie. Dark lips and dark eyes looks clownish (most of the time) and nude/lighter lips look great with dark eyes. Just don't overdo it!

      ~Eyeliner: Tarte- emphasEYES high definition eye pencil. It is super slim and creates really nice lines.

      Ok well that took a while to type out!! haha. If you need any help or want to send me your picture, I'd be happy to help you further!! you can email me at ohiemily@yahoo.com

      Good luck & congratulations!!!!!!
