Lose The Weight Before Your Big Day

Vintage Wedding Ideas

Vintage wedding themes are a timeless classic, as well as fun and exciting both in the planning and in the celebration. When you have a vintage style wedding, the day will be filled with glamour and elegance as you step back in time to proclaim your love in the presence of family and friends. The following tips will help you plan the perfect wedding that uses the antique or Victorian era as the time period for your theme. This includes ideas for everything from inexpensive vintage wedding favors to your mode of transportation.

The Venue
Choosing the venue is important as it will set the mood for the day’s events. If possible, choose someplace that has a Victorian feel, such as an old world style bed and breakfast or a botanical garden. If you are unable to find an historical venue, you can duplicate the look and feel with various decorations.

The Invitations
The style of the invitations will clue your guests in to the type of wedding you are planning. Choose stationary that is delicate and has a worn appearance, such as linen stationery. Also, use a font that is associated with the period. To finish off the invitation with an antique look, search the internet for vintage style labels for sealing the envelope.

The Wedding Attire
Finding the perfect wedding gown and wedding party attire can be fun, but exhausting. If you cannot find a new gown that fits the wedding theme, you could search in consignment shops, thrift shops and online auctions. For the best price, check with your mother or grandmother and ask to borrow one of their gowns. The bridesmaids should wear simple, yet elegant gowns in colors such as cream, pink or lilacs. The gowns they wear do not have to be identical. For accessories, borrow family heirlooms and shop in thrift stores and/or antique shops.

Decorations & Colors
The decorations and the color scheme for a vintage wedding should contain muted and pastel shades. Decorations should not be matchy matchy, but instead should be a mixture of different place settings with delicate flower patterns. Use items such as ferns, birdcages, and feathers to add dimension and drama to the decorations. Also, use a lot of candles that are white or cream colored in various sizes.

Wedding Favors
The wedding favors are the bride and groom’s way of thanking their guests and wedding party for sharing the special day with them. Inexpensive wedding favors for a vintage theme could include items such as antique picture frames (these can also double for seat placing), vintage candle holders, or delicate lace fans. Favors could also be items that you have made, such as cookies wrapped in plain white paper tied with a ribbon in the wedding colors.

The Flowers
The flowers used in the wedding bouquets, centerpieces and groomsmens’ boutonnieres should be traditional flowers. Some ideas include lilies, roses, snapdragons and chrysanthemums. Also include fillers in the bouquet, such as small amounts of baby’s breath and maybe a few ferns for greenery. The bouquets will have a vintage look when they are tied in a bunch with simple white ribbon. The flowers used in centerpieces and other decorations could be put into jars and or vases that are not all exactly alike.

Mode of Transportation
Throwing a vintage themed wedding means you should arrive and depart in style. Consider renting a classic car, such as a Rolls Royce. Many limousine companies have vintage style vehicles for rent, but they can be expensive so do some research for companies with the best bargain.

  3. QUESTION:
    Vintage wedding ideas?
I posted a question not long ago, and I didn't really have much of an idea. My fiance and I have been talking about a vintage wedding theme. I think of 2 different types of vintage, the 40's 50's 60's type vintage, and then the victorian gothic era. I personally like both and so does he. Does anyone have any ideas on either? The wedding date is March 17 so we have some time, I'm just trying to get ideas.

    • ANSWER:
In just putting in a victorian gothic wedding information on web search, there is a tone of info. To me, just me, I would much prefer the victorian gothic. 40's-60's will be much harder to research and to me harder to fine-line the time-line, no pun intended. But VG everyone will know the theme of your wedding. Love it, myself!!!

  4. QUESTION:
    Vintage wedding ideas anyone?
Since my wedding dress is a vintage gown that I'm slightly revamping I wanted to base my wedding and reception around that sort of "theme."

My invitations will be dyed in tea to give them that "vintage" feel as well....I'm stuck on decorations though, how can I convey that vintage feel in the decor? Any ideas?

This website has kind of a vague idea of what I'm going for if it helps

    http://www.vintagemagpie.co.uk/

    • ANSWER:
I would say you should use feathers and delicate flowers to get across that vintage feel, peonies and hydrangeas.

  5. QUESTION:
    vintage wedding ideas?
We are getting married this September. We are having a backyard wedding. We want it to have a simple and vintage feel. Our colors are navy blue and golden yellow.
Any cute vintage, unique and money saving ideas would be great.

Have you tried going to theknot.com? They have a lot of articles and ideas for vintage weddings.
      http://wedding.theknot.com/wedding-themes/vintage-weddings.aspx

For your centerpieces, you could do something with mason jars, like this:
      http://manolobrides.com/images/2011/05/mason-jar-centerpieces-wedding.jpg
Or, you could do something creative with a string of pearls, which would give the centerpieces a vintage feel. An old birdcage, or some lanterns would look nice:
      http://www.diyweddingexpert.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/diy-birdcage-wedding-centerpiece.jpg
      http://www.potterybarn.com/pbimgs/rk/images/dp/wcm/201022/0245/img78m.jpg

Another idea would be using teapots and teacups. http://image76.webshots.com/176/5/59/52/2867559520053092325hwWdLw_ph.jpg

For your ceremony, you can hang some lanterns in the tree; like this:
      http://www.brides.com/images/2011_brideslocal/FW11/nat-altar-decor/main/wedding-ceremony-altar-decor-ideas-005.jpg
You could make decorations like these iin your colors: http://www.petdogonline.net/uploads/garden-roses-hanging-ceremony-backdrop1.jpg
      Or, some other ideas: http://ruffledblog.com/vintage-wedding-blog/rustic-barn-wedding-antique-cheerful21.jpg

  6. QUESTION:
Vintage Wedding ideas???... I need your help clever girls!?
HI, Im getting married in 2 years and Im just starting to get some ideas in order for what I like. Im in love with a Vintage theme with a twist. I love the 1930's and 40's fashion, the women were so beautiful. Here is a link to the dress that I love http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/style/guideposts/wedding/gallery/gallery9.htm and Im just wondering how I should decorate to go with it. I love creams and whites. What should my bridemaids wear? What sort of decorations should I use?? HELP!
Sorry I should have made it a bit clearer! Im not too keen on having evrything vintage just things like the bridal party outfits, table decorations and music. I'm getting married in a military chapel which is about 50 or 60 years old so it already fits. Just little touches I need some help with!

    • ANSWER:
Well, I guess the main question is: How far you want to take this? Do you want it to be a theme wedding where everyone is dressed in period dress (bridal party, of course) and all the decor is tied in, or do you just want little touches of vintage "stuff" here and there?

I completely understand your fashion taste - in middle school/high school I was obsessed with the culture and fashion of the 1920's-50's. (I used to buy vintage patterns and make them into dresses to wear to school..!)

If you just want to decorate with a few retro touches here and there, I would recommend hitting up antique stores, thrift shops, and garage sales. Ask relatives if they have attics and basements you can ransack to find old bowls, candelabras, jewelry, etc. Dick and Jane were introduced to the world in 1931 or so, so you could potentially play off of that for a nice "his and hers" theme!

For a little more of a theme party feel, you could try tying in some of the food -- look for the "old-fashioned" glass soda bottles. Have a bar where someone is serving different flavoured sodas (employ a "soda jerk" for the night!). Watch some old Fred Astaire movies - see if you can recreate one of his dances with Ginger Rogers for your first dance!
I'm not sure if it would be feasible, but try growing your own "depression gardens" to use as centerpieces. (Homegrown crystals coloured originally with different household supplies, although I'm sure food-colouring works too!)
Apparently fiestaware was already around then, so you could potentially serve your meal on that..!
Purchase a couple of those retro metal advertising signs for beauty/hygiene products and stick one on the counter of each bathroom.

Bridesmaids could potentially wear tea-length halter dresses with simple lines. (You'd want them to be in a pale colour, most likely.) Fingerwaves / pincurls would be neat if it would be possible with your bridesmaids' hair types. Have everyone in the bridal party carrying handkerchiefs.

The author of the article linked below had a 1940's themed wedding; she's got some pretty good suggestions! She even recommends some helpful books.

Have fun! I hope your wedding is absolutely wonderful, and that the marriage is even better!

Edit: Well, for music in that era, there's only one choice - Big Band! (And if you can't afford a big band, how about a small combo that plays the jazz standards or a DJ that has a lot of cds?)
I would definitely recommend (again) looking through thrift stores to find old dishes. Set some flowers in them and they can be really simple, cute, retro centerpieces!

  7. QUESTION:
I'm looking for a place in Orlando to hold my vintage inspired wedding reception. Any ideas?
To give you a little more info, my wedding will be in january of 2011. My colors are plum, silver, and ivory. There will be about 150 people at the most, so i need a pretty good amount of room. I'm not a huge fan of hotel ballrooms, unless it has a vintage feel to it. And when i say vintage, i mean kind of like a 40's glam thing.

    • ANSWER:
well it this place that is on the florida strip not that far from the airport and bahama breeze...if you like the titanic, is this place that is like the scene at the end of the movie to where she goes back with the steps and all. It looks just like it on the boat and in my head that in vintage.

  8. QUESTION:
    Ideas for a vintage wedding?
I need some ideas as to what type of food I should have for a vintage wedding and also some neat favors for the guests. I don't want finger foods and I want the favors to relate to our theme. Thanks in advance!

    • ANSWER:
Have whatever type of food you like. There really is no such thing as a "vintage menu." I can tell you, though, that whatever era you are looking at, things were much simpler. There was no hors d'oeuvres; then a big meal; then a 7-layer cake. Things were much, much simpler.

I would suggest just some good "home cooking" type of a meal: baked ham; baked chicken; roast beef, etc. along with some potatoes; a veggie choice or 2; etc., etc.

Favors? Again, there really isn't much "vintage wise" that you can give out. Couples didn't do favors until more recently. One thing that I do know of is that they still make some types of "vintage" candy (candy that I remember as a kid - I'm 54), so candy from the 1960s. You can find things like these by searching Google.

  9. QUESTION:
Vintage romance themed wedding... Ideas and inspiration?
I've decided on a vintage theme for my wedding. After a lot of contemplating and wondering what 'theme' to have, I made a scrapbook of dresses/cakes/flowers I liked and realised that without thinking I'd chosen a vintage wedding. I like simple elegant dresses, and my bridesmaids will be in dusky pink dresses. I want to have old fashioned style photo frames to display the table numbers, and a swing band for the evening.

My question is, does anyone know of any other ideas that might be nice, or any websites I could look at for inspiration for this kinda wedding??

    • ANSWER:

  10. QUESTION:
Any ideas for the decoration for my vintage wedding?
I don't want Indie styled, but I want it lacy and old-fashion I guess. Not quite Victorian though. Help?

    • ANSWER:
Here is some history about what they wore:
      http://home.att.net/~design-house/history/history_1930.htm

Some pictures of what they wore:
      http://www.fashion-era.com/1930s/1930s_fashions_in_old_photos.htm

And I found this neat site too:
      http://www.weddingvendors.com/planning/articles/tips-for-a-retro-wedding/

I think decoration isn't really needed. Since it seems like they just got married at home or in a church. They didn't go all out like we do now. If you wanted to make it vintage themed, why not have everyone dress up.

      Good luck!

    Tips For Great Wedding Pictures

Wedding photography in Sydney strives to make your photo shoots stress free and perfectly taken. While you try to check and learn on the services which you are about to pay for, it would also be wise to know some useful tips. Most couple often allot a large sum for wedding photography alone.

Not everyone has the budget for well known professional photographers who usually quote higher prices. There are a lot of equally good wedding photographers that can offer you decent services for an affordable price. Check their previous works and sit down with the photographer and lay out all...

I just need a little help on songs, decorations, and type of ideas that you think might be cute and classy.

    • ANSWER:
i love it! my fiance and i are having a vintage wedding also. definitely use frank sinatra but include other classics as dean martin, sammy david jr, etc. we are dancing to Unforgettable by Nat King Cole. i am happy that you are using a birdcage veil. its beautiful and timeless. We found these awesome chandeliers that are lit by candles which are going to be hung above all the tables. Candles are classic and will add beautiful ambiance to your reception. gold was very popular during the glamourous 40s so any detail/ color scheme that will include that will add to the theme. also, use flowers such as ranunculus and freesia. they are beautiful, eclectic, and nostalgic. we are having a cocktail hour with a string quartet to keep the classy and simplistic time before dinner. make sure to serve drinks like martinis and scotch. make sure to add your own personal twist to the mix too. i hope this helps!!! congrats. and thank you to your fiance for his service.

  13. QUESTION:
    Vintage Wedding Gift Ideas?
A new coworker of mine is getting married and the whole office would like to chip in for a special gift. I am still doing my research but want to get her something special and memorable.Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

    • ANSWER:
Instead of wedding china, a friend of mine asked for jadeite serving bowls and whatnot. They're gorgeous vintage pieces that come in incredible shades of green. Anything by Fireking is a good choice. You can find them on Etsy.com, eBay, and in antique stores.

If jadeite is a little too retro for your coworker (after all, not everyone loves green), you might consider a vintage cut-glass piece, like a vase, serving bowl, or cake stand. They're beautiful and timeless.

  14. QUESTION:
A shaby sheek, vintage wedding theme...any ideas??? ?
I want my wedding to have a southern, country, vintage feel. I already have an outdoor facility in Georgia for the wedding. I know I am going to give small homemade jams for gifts and serve BBQ and cobblers, sweet tea and lemon aid...I dont want it to be redneck, I want it to has a southern belle feel and still be elgant. I like the idea of using quilts and old vintage items. I am serving the lemon aid out of an old wood cart and making the programs into fans. Any ideas for little details?
Okay, so my spelling here sucks but I am at work multi tasking...what can you say, we can't all be scholars. Anyway, there are some wonderful suggestions. I do know how to search google. I like to get personal opinions though. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
That sounds like it will be really cute. With everything that you have described it sounds like your wedding will have a definite country/southern atmosphere - not redneck at all.
Have you thought about what you want to do for your centerpieces? Do you want to use flowers - or do you want to have something a little different? I like when people use fresh fruit, like lemons, for their centerpieces. Or I have seen some nice centerpieces using mason jars.

  15. QUESTION:
Good ideas for a vintage-ish wedding?
Hi! I'm having a wedding in an old building that has chandeliers, old furniture, and a vintage vibe: http://www.attichansen.com (it's Hansen Place).

I have an off-white dress and was planning on having plum, sage, and off-white as the main colors. Does this sound pretty?

Does anyone have any other suggestions for giving the wedding an older feel without going all-out (we're on a budget, but still want it to look great). Any ideas help!

    • ANSWER:
      Hi and congratulations!

Very pretty venue. I love the colors you have chosen and would go with those. Actually, if you read the description of the room, they say that it is "contemporary," not vintage. Also, they also say that all that is needed for decorations is "minimal centerpieces." Really, I do think that they are right! I would go with some candles or flowers as centerpieces and leave it at that. With the waterfall, the lights around the windows, and the lighted silk trees throughout the room...that is all that is needed! Very pretty.

  16. QUESTION:
Wedding dress ideas for a vintage themed wedding?
I want a less expensive (under 0) dress that is not too dated, but would go well with our "vintage/farmhouse" themed wedding. I'm a pretty average shape, about 140 pound, 5'10''. I have a long torso, decent hips, not much of a butt. My boobs are a 34 C/ 32 D. Haha, I know this is a bunch of info but I'm so sick of looking for dresses that I hoped you guys would give me some help. I like lace...but now I am starting to shy away from it. (Although it could be fine.) I have back problems, so nothing too heavy and I hate trains. (A sweep train is enough for me.) Girls, help me with some links! Pleeeeease!!! : )

    • ANSWER:
      http://www.vintageglamblog.com may have ideas.

http://www.dollycouture.net has a variety of vintage-looking dresses. Most are 50s styles but there are a couple that could work for other decades. http://www.stephaniejamescouture.com is vintage themed and you can get ideas there to take to a local seamstress but that designer isn't cheap by any means.

Honestly though, trains aren't typically found on vintage dresses to begin with.

    I need some help!

We have decided to get married in spring with a vintage style theme (more of a subtle theme than an over the top theme).

I have decided on the bonbonierre gift (glasses and truffles for the boys, perfume bottles and pearls for the girls), have picked a strapless dress for me, the wedding is a garden wedding in the botanical gardens, with an intimate posh restaurant reception and vintage cars...

however, i am really struggling to know how i should decorate the tables and the venue, and what flowers to choose (or if i should have flowers at all?)

    any help would be great.

    thanks!

  22. QUESTION:
    Vintage Wedding?
I'm looking to give my wedding a theme from anywhere between the 1920's and 1940's. For my reception though, I want to have objects everywhere of things from these periods. Like a pair of those old lace up ankle boots (Mary Poppins Style). I'm going to be having a DJ playing old songs but can't think of any good decoration items. Also, for my invitations, I don't want to send out a paper invitation but rather, an object. For example, my sister got married on the beach in Hawaii and for her inviation she sent out bottles filled with sand and shells and scolls with every guest name on it. The actual invitation was laquered to the bottle. Any ideas on something unique I could do for mine?
It will either be 1920's or 1940's decided on what I can use better with my theme

    • ANSWER:
I have same idea for my wedding, here are some suggestions. First of all, I would forgo the boots, unless you are going with a Victorian style wedding. The 1930's was an absolutely lovley decade. Just make sure you pic one decade because there is a lot of difference between the clothing from the 1920's, 1930's and 1940's. If doing the 1920's or 1930's you might want to look into getting finger waves, and getting an authentic dress from that era. They are avalible and often not expensive.Instead of a DJ, I would have an orchestra or big band, or a jazz band that would play songs of that era. I would send out invitations and choose an art deco design, or you could send out something which is uniquely art deco. Or what about a black and white photograph of you and you hubby to be of you dressed in clothing from that era, and a photograph which is meant to look old. For decoration ideas, I would watch old movies, it depends on your setting of where your wedding is taking place.

I am having a wedding at a ski lodge. Any ideas on centerpieces? The wedding is green ivory...very vintage too
The lodge has black and white photos of skiing and I want to keep it elegant and simple. I was thinking to use wrought iron candle holders, ivory candles and decorate the table with the favors...which are plantable baby evergrens. Is that ok?

    • ANSWER:
I think that would look beautiful. It sounds like it will be very elegant.
Maybe you could do something like this with the candles. I like the way that they have the greenery in this picture:

    • ANSWER:
You can Use a classic, like a old-style Rolls Royce, as your getaway car. Use a red carpet as the runner either for your aisle or in your reception room. You could do a cigar and brandy bar for the men (and the women to of course - but typically it was done for the men back then). You can decorate the table with feather boas, cigars, long cigarette holders, etc. http://www.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/inspira03.jpg

  26. QUESTION:
Does anyone have any ideas for cheap wedding favors?
I would like to do a vintage/retro type wedding and would like to know if anyone has any inexpensive favor ideas

    • ANSWER:
homemade cookies -- bake them beforehand (you could even freeze batches) and wrap them nicely.

      homemade peanut brittle

candy buffet/bar - have vintage candies in different clear glass vintage jars, and provide glassine bags for guests to fill. (This is what I'm doing for our vintage/rustic wedding.)

Anything edible will be the most popular. No one uses trinkets.

  27. QUESTION:
wedding decorating ideas for lace and pearl theme?
I'm getting married in May and having a vintage-y theme where I want to decorate with lace and pearls (my colors are light pink, ivory, and black). We're on a tight budget so we can't go crazy, but if you have any centerpiece ideas or anything, I'd be happy to hear them! It's not a huge wedding (about 50people tops), so we have room to be creative!

    • ANSWER:
I would go for the ivory and pearls, really sophisticated, with a little lace and touch of black. What about pearl shells? Look in second hand or vintage clothing shops for the lace. Do you know a potter or someone who can make pearl lookalikes out of clay or papier mache? Looks really good, tiny ones and large ones on table, you could even have the odd black pearl ! Your could even get some paper doylies and place them on table cloths and spray black or ivory on so they come out on table cloth looking like lace. You have to see it, it looks great.Your wedding sounds really art deco and lovely. Have a great day.

  28. QUESTION:
How to have a "vintage" wedding?
I want to have a vintage feel to my wedding. Not the entire thing necessarily, but the decor. Any ideas? Flowers, center pieces, photo displays (of us as kids until now). Im very visual, so pics will help!

    • ANSWER:
First, congrats on your engagement- what a wonderful journey!!

Second, my fave vintage centerpiece idea is super easy, affordable, and charming- simply use antique china (from your china cabinet or even an antique or thrift store) and fill them with soft, romantic, vintage-esque flowers like pink roses and peonies. You can arrange them at different heights and combinations on each different table. You can even add something sweet into a few of them- gold wrapped chocolate candies are great throw backs.

Or, if you want to go vintage glam, there are many ways to incorporate the theme, but it's always easy to start with the centerpiece and use their design elements to echo the feel in other places. Try using super dramatic, ultra-tall, off-white or cream ostrich feathers arranged in simple narrow or antique vases. Add a little bling to the feathers using rhinestones and craft glue and you'll be so old Hollywood!

Also, along with pics and directions for these projects, we've got TONS more vintage wedding ideas on our website http://FourWhiteMice.com !! We have over 1,000 easily searchable do-it-yourself wedding projects including many vintage options from flowers, centerpieces, invites, veils, and the list goes on... 30. QUESTION:
recipe suggestions for vintage inspired wedding?
I am getting married in August and am having a really small wedding 25 ppl. We are doing all the cooking ourselves, my brother is an amazing cook! But we don't want to spend the day of in the kitchen so we are trying to think of make ahead dishes that will go with my vintage theme. Anyone have any recipe suggestions. I know what we are making in terms of desserts but need appetizer, main, and side dish ideas (some vegetarian too) that go with our sort of Victorian throw back theme.

    • ANSWER:
Send me an invite please? I loooveee Victorian things! Hehe!

http://www.lonehand.com/recipes.htm Here is a website that organizes by type of food. If you go into the pie section, it even has some non fruit ones in there. The sandwich section is also interesting.

      http://www.cooks.com/rec/search/0,1-0,victorian_foods_in_1850,FF.html Here are some more.

It might also be worth a trip to the library, I can't imagine you are the first person who has been looking for that type of food, and I don't know why the first answer is getting thumbs down...

Another suggestion, I don't know what you are doing about alcohol, but it could be fun if whoever is making drinks knows how to do old fashioned drinks, or can make one up that looks like absinthe if you don't plan on serving real absinthe.

  31. QUESTION:
Help! BF & I are disagreeing about wedding ideas!?
My bf & I are planning on getting married when we finish college (which will be in the next couple of years). He wants a traditional wedding, very classic, beach location. I want a vintage-inspired wedding, complete with suspenders, vests, finger waves and vintage car. How do I combine the best of both worlds without crushing my dreams?
thanks for all the awesome suggestions! we will put them to the test.

    • ANSWER:
OK, so, a wedding isn't only about brides these days....Men are more opinionated than ever. If he is going to be choosey, assume it is a good thing, because he chose you in the first place.

With that said, you and he, and anyone else PAYING for the wedding, need to be considered when thinking of how you want it planned out. Guys tend to want something more traditional, just because they don't understand new day concepts and what it all takes.

The best way to figure it all out, is to prioritize...Sit down with him and write down the different ideas you have. Your wedding can still hold tradition and ring through with the vintage vibe if you can get down to what is important to the both of you.

Remember first and foremost that this occasion is about the both of you. And that you should both respect the others feelings and ideas and make them work well

Take a piece of paper for each of you....and a wedding magazine....each of you silently go through the magazine and mark 3 ideas that you absolutely love, and if you have some internet ideas or what not handy, use those as well.....but ONLY 3. Then write down the 3 most important things to you....maybe it is your dress, or your aunt Ayda singing a song....or the flowers?? Center pieces?? vows?? pull the 3 things together, and see where you interests lie. See what is similar. The few things that you are having conflicts with you both have to compromise. The whole planning thing will be a bunch of give and take....where a finger wave can make traditional gowns ring true. All in all, respect each other, because when the wedding is over, you still have a lifetime of difficult decisions.

  34. QUESTION:
    Good Ideas for wedding venues?
I am starting to plan my wedding. I am having A LOT of trouble trying to look for a venue. Where I live it doesn't seem like there is any where to get married! I am planning on having possibly an old hollywood themed wedding, or something kind of classic and vintage. I was wondering if anyone had ideas of what kind of places would be nice to consider when having this type of wedding!? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
I love your old hollywood idea! That sounds really awesome!

Honestly, I think you could have this theme pretty much in any indoor space. A hotel ballroom is what instantly pops into my head, but other great choices would be convention centers, museums, art galleries, historic old homes, theaters, and restaurants. It really depends on the space itself, because any of these could be perfect. If you wanted an outdoor ceremony, a garden would be nice. Then you could focus on the theme during the reception.

Another idea is to think of a specific classic movie that is your favorite. You could choose a venue and decorate according to that specific movie. Maybe the club from Casablanca or the theater feel of Singing in the Rain.

If I were planning an old hollywood themed wedding, I would probably try to find a theater that would let me have the wedding there. I would take a look at prom websites like http://www.stumpsprom.com to see what kind of hollywood themed decorations they had. I would definitely glamor it up with the bridal party attire and focus on getting a lot of black and white pictures. Classic songs would also be an important part of the theme.

So don't focus too much on the actual venue if you don't find one that is perfect for your theme. You can do a lot with the decorations, music, and attire to create the mood of old hollywood without having the perfect space.

Throwing a wedding with a great theme can be a lot of fun, but it isn't always cheap. Take a look at http://www.savemoneyonawedding.com. This site has great tips on how to keep your budget under control.

Have the men dress up long black suits coats with chains.

Invitations, I would pick something lacy, like this

      bouquet
      http://shindigzparty.files.wordpress.com/2007/08/6w023t.jpg
This is what I think of when I think of that time era.

Have everyone dress up in vintage clothing, like 1950's sundresses and suits.

For the venue, how about a local park in the gardens instead of a typical church wedding?

    • ANSWER:
I LOVE that dress - I've been looking for months for something similar. I don't believe it exists in this universe. Perhaps making them should be my million dollar idea. In the meantime, I think I'm going to make my own. Here is the pattern I found that is very similar:

      http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v8615-products-10674.php?page_id=856

All you would have to do is add the bow - not a big deal.

I was at the fabric store last week, had the pattern and fabric in hand and chickened out! Maybe your question was an omen?

I also saw this person on Etsy.com who will use that pattern for a very resonable price, however, they are in Thailand = NERVOUS!

    • ANSWER:
it would be cool if you could find a venue that has an old fashioned carousel.

use lots of balloons and those triangle flags on stings to decorate. pomanders for flower instead of bouquets or hand them on chairs for aisle decorations

candy bar with old fashioned penny candies in jars of all sizes, or individual little jars with gum balls or candies for favors, or candied apples for favors

rent one of those photo boths which are so popular now for weddings. lots of fun for a carnival style wedding especially.

have an old fashioned banjo group or quartet to play/sing

a bicycle built for two for decoration prop or to ride.

      old fashioned ice cream machines

wedding invitations that look like carnival tickets

  49. QUESTION:
Hi, can anyone give me vintage make-up ideas, e.g. eyeshadow. lipstick?
Pics would be good too. Its for my friends wedding, she is having a vintage themed wedding and i'm doing her make-up.
    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
hi hun, you dont state exactly what era you are looking for but if it helps i am a 1940s re enactor and the look is.... matt foundation( not shiny) max factor pan stick is brilliant!red rouge, not too much just a little then powder over this with pressed powder.
no eyeshadow on the eyes, but lashings of black mascara and if you like a little black liquid eyeliner on the top lid only .this must be a sharp line, not blurred
finally, and most importantly no 1940s girl would be seen without her lipstick which must be BRIGHT RED!!!
to do this perfectly take your foundation over your lips then blot with a tissue, line the lips with a red liner and then colour the entire lips with the same liner, as if you are actually crayoning your lips. then put your red lipstick on over this, blot and reapply it. do NOT use any gloss, remember the look is matt not shiny. to see the perfect 1940s face look at pictures of dita von teese her make up is just right.make sure you carry a powder compact with you so you can reapply during the day.
      hope this helps xxx

  50. QUESTION:
    vintage wedding venues?
My fiance and I live in Canton, Ga. We are looking for a place to have our wedding and reception for less than 00. We are doing a vintage theme, so we would like some place outdoors that just has that vintage feel. Please let me know if you have any ideas. We also want a place that will let us do our own food, we don't want to spend a ridiculous amount for the place to cater our reception. Thanks!!!!
thanks a lot for your help. This really helps us out so much!

    • ANSWER:
the lovely old canton theatre is available for rent for only 175 dollars per hour...but that would not be an outdoor place. however, you can do your own catering and whatever there and it give you the whole building to use. http://www.cantontheatre.com/rental/default.asp

in marietta, there is a lovely old victorian house which does weddings called the stanley house mansion. i don't know if you can bring in your own catering but even if they don't allow it, they have full catering packages starting at only 3500 which really is a good price and eliminates lots of headaches and extra work. http://www.thestanleyhouse.com/

in canton, the historic rock barn is available for rent for weddings as well. they charge only 650 dollars for all day saturday and 150 additional for use on friday night for rehearsal. http://www.rockbarn.org/rockbarnRental.php
