Lose The Weight Before Your Big Day

Wedding Band

Wedding ring inscriptions are a great way to covert the simplest wedding band into a unique wedding band. Gone are the days of just having your wedding anniversary scratched on the inside of your ring. Is there a song title, saying, or even a scripture that you both love?

Some couples decide to have a part of their wedding vows engraved on their wedding rings. Another popular idea is to incorporate something from the wedding theme (if you had one). The name of the resort or town where you are honeymooning perhaps? Your pet names for each other, or even the name of the restaurant for your first date.

The engraved wedding band is not just limited to words on the inner side of the band. Some couples are electing to have longer inscriptions on the edge of their band or on the outer side (this would have to be re engraved as the ring wore down). Some specialized jewelers are even engraving inscriptions on diamonds. These are not usually obvious to the naked eye, and are more costly, but do allow for identification of your stone if it is ever stolen.

Check on the time frame for the engraving to be done. This can vary from one day to a month. Prices can fluctuate between per letter to almost depending on whether the engraving is done by hand or machine, and the degree of embellishment you require. It is also probably a great idea if you are able to see any of the jeweler's other engraving handiwork. If your jeweler seems hesitant, or disinterested find another who does specialize in wedding band engraving.

Your own inscriptions will be on your wedding rings forever. If the words are on the inside, none else will generally be reading them, allowing for a little more privacy. However, if you opt for an external wedding ring inscription, you will need to remember that others will be able to read it as well. Your pet nicknames may not look like quite such a great idea in another 20 or 30 years.

Many couple are electing to have inscriptions in French, Italian, Spanish, Latin, or Hebrew. What about some of these?

*English:
Always
Forever
Love is eternal
Today, tomorrow, forever
Never to part
From this moment on
God unite both in love
Bless this ring, bless our life

*French:
Je T'aime: I Love You
Par Grant Amour: For My Greatest Love
Mon Coeur Est a Vous: You Have My Heart
Par Grant Amour: For My Greatest Love
Mon Amour: My Love
Pour toujours et toujours: Forever and always

*Spanish:
Con tutto l'mio amore: I am yours always

*Italian:
Il Mio Cuore e il Tuo Per Sempre: My Heart is Yours Forever
Con tutto l'mio amore: With all my heart
Amore Mio: My Love

*Hebrew:
Ani L'dodi V'dodi Li: I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine
Mizpah: God watch between us when we are absent from one another

* Latin:
Amor Vincit Omnia: Love Conquers All
Semper Amemus: Let Us Love Always
Deus Nos Iunxit: God Joined Us
Pari Passu: With Equal Step
Semper Fidelis: Always Faithful

Many of these quotes actually translate into beautiful inscriptions in English.

Wedding ring inscriptions can be fun, romantic, sentimental, or incredibly personal. Words of love to be permanently remembered. Much like your wedding vows.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    wedding band?
If you were seeing someone that you know for a fact is not married, or has never been, what is the signifigance of wearing a wedding band? Just curious....
The person I am seeing wears a gold wedding band even thoug I know he has never been married. He wears it on his right ring finger, and I know he is very much serious about his commitment to god. It does not stop him from having fun, but just wondering what the ring may signify?

    • ANSWER:
Either a widower or a divorcee who cant seem to let go. Or maybe it belonged to his grandfather or father and they were quite close so he wears his ring. What finger and hand does he wear it on?

      ETA:
On the right hand usually signifies a widower, but you say you know he hasnt been married. I think Chastity rings are worn on the left hand, so its probably not that either, plus you say he likes to have fun and I am guessing that means fun in the dirty sense of the word!
Are you not comfortable asking him yet? It's not a very invasive question, why not just bring it up one day when you are sitting around.

  2. QUESTION:
    Wedding band...?
My fiance and I went to the jewlers yesterday to pick out a wedding band and I picked out a white gold band with about 5 small diamonds set in the band. I looked online later and saw that this band is called an "anniversary band". I was just wondering what you girls though about this? Also, I'm wondering how common this type of ring is as a wedding band, or do most of you have just a plain wedding band?
    Thank ahead of time!

    • ANSWER:
Most of my friends have an anniversary ring as their wedding band. That way they can wear just the wedding band and it still have a little sparkle to it.

  3. QUESTION:
    Wedding Band?
If I put on my husband's wedding band over mine does God still look at us as married? Christian view...

    • ANSWER:
      What?

I'll need more on this...did he die? If so - no, the whole "death do you part" thing.

If you just got a divorce - yes, even if you didn't get re-married.

Or - if you're still married - yes he does.

If he did die, sorry to hear about your loss.

  4. QUESTION:
How do I properly exchange wedding rings if bride has a band set?
My soon to be wife's wedding ring is a 2 piece set: engagement ring and a wedding band. How do I exchange rings during the ceremony? Should she already have the engagement ring on, and I just add the wedding band? Or should both her engagement ring and wedding band be on the ring pillow and I put both on her? If so, one at a time or simultaneously?

    • ANSWER:
I'm assuming they aren't soldered together. They are still 2 seperate pieces.
There are a couple options for the engagement ring during the ceremony.
Now, for the most part, the wedding band goes on the bottom of the finger with the engagement ring ontop (some old tradition of it being closest to your heart) So for the engagement ring:
      1. She can hand it to her MOH to hold during the ceremony and put it back on right after.
      2. She can put it on her right hand and put it back on the proper finger afterwards (this is what I'm doing)
      3. She can leave it on and just switch them around afterwards.
      4. She can put it on the ring pillow and have you put both on her hand. Personally I'm not a fan of this way because you give her the engagement ring when you propose and the wedding band when you marry. One should not be given at the opposite time. Does that wording make sense? lol

  5. QUESTION:
What is the difference between a wedding ring and a wedding band?
And what should a wedding band look like?
How can you tell the difference from a normal ring to a wedding ring?
Are wedding rings always made of gold?
How much should a simple wedding ring/band cost?

    • ANSWER:
ok so your wedding ring is the ring you get when u are engaged. it belongs on your ring finger [ironic yes?] and that is how u tell it is a wedding ring and not a regular ring. when u actually get married u get the wedding band which goes under the wedding ring. traditionally wedding rings are gold or white gold but realy u can do watever you want.
if it were me id get silver

  6. QUESTION:
How can you remove a wedding band from a swollen finger?
My wife's wedding band has been getting tighter over the years. Yesterday, she did something that is making her finger swell. The wedding band won't come off, and it's making her arm and hand hurt. We've tried washing her hand in soap, but the swelling is making the ring impossible to remove.

Is there any way to remove the ring other than cutting it off?

    • ANSWER:
One way or another, the ring HAS to come off. It's cutting off her circulation on her finger and that's what's causing her to have pain in arm and hand. Have you tried grease or anything else besides soap and water? Try some grease and then if it doesn't come off, she has to get it cut off or else she'll lose circulation... sorry :(

  7. QUESTION:
Where can I find a wedding band to match vintage engagement ring?
My engagement ring is nearly 100 years old and I'm having a hard time finding a wedding band that matches.
It is a thin band that dovetails toward a solitaire 1/2ct round diamond. There is a small engraved pattern on each side of the diamond surrounded by mill grain.
Hope you can visualize it from my description.

    • ANSWER:
Why not talk to a jeweler and see if someone can make you a matching ring.

I think the extra expense might be worth it to you.

  8. QUESTION:
Should the thickness of the engagement ring and wedding band be the same?
I got a beautiful round cut solitaire diamond engagement ring from my fiance (white gold). I asked the jeweler's where we got it, if they could order the matching wedding band. We received the wedding band, and while it is obviously the same "make" as the engagement ring (the ring narrows under the finger, same edges, etc.) the wedding band is thicker than the engagement ring, and it looks a little weird to be. Is it normal for one ring to be thicker than the other? Do I just need to get used to it?

    • ANSWER:
It doesn't matter...especially if you're going to solder them together. That's a REALLY minor thing to be worrying about, nobody is going to notice. I would reccomend soldering them together b/c they will wear on each other if not.

  9. QUESTION:
What does your wedding band breaking in a dream mean?

  10. QUESTION:
What kind of wedding band would look best with my princess cut solitare ring?
I have a plain platnium band with a 1 ct. princess cut diamond. I wanted to get some opinions on wedding bands and what might look nice. I like the diamond bands, but wasn't sure if this would look alright, since there are no diamonds in the engagement ring band. Should they match?

    • ANSWER:
A good option to look into are ring wraps. These are bands that the engagement ring sits in-between 2 connected bands that usually have stones on them. This give your solitaire a “Fuller” look and it also protects the engagement ring a little more.

I know PLENTY of girls with solitaires who have bands with stones, and to be honest it looks great! I prefer the cut of the stone on the bands to match the cut of the stone on the solitaire, but that is all personal preference. The exciting thing about bands with stones, is you can get one as your wedding band then add another to the front side of your ring for a later anniversary.

If you aren’t a “Flashy” person, then try find a pretty plain band that maybe has some sort of pattern etched into the metal.

I have a multi stone engagement ring, originally I had wanted a pretty diamond and sapphire band. But then my mother offered her original wedding band (my dad upgraded here for their 25th) and I tried it on with my engagement ring I was SOLD! It is a simple white cold band with a neat ridge along the edges. The 2 rings together look like they were meant for one another.

Go and try on different styles, if your search goes how mine you will know what band belongs with your ring as soon as you put it on.

  11. QUESTION:
What does it mean when women get 2 double band for the wedding band?
I have an engagement ring and I am trying to figure out what to do for the wedding band. I see some rings have it when one band goes on top of the engagement ring and the other goes on the bottom. I think that is kind of cute but I did not know the point to the 2 bands, if there is one. Anyone know?

    • ANSWER:
Generally the band that sits on the side of the engagement ring closer to the hand is the wedding band, and the ring closer to the nail is called an eternity band. In my mother's era, an eternity band was given on the tenth wedding anniversary, or on the birth of the first child. Now, it is more common that it's either first anniversary or first child.

  12. QUESTION:
Is my wedding band the cause of tiny brown spot on ring finger?
I suddenly noticed this needle sized brown spot (on the palm side) right underneath my wedding band. I begin to wonder if the metal is toxic, like lead or something. I have been wearing this white gold toned band for over 10 years. Anyone knows what the cause might be?

  13. QUESTION:
Can a wedding band be melted down and reworked?
I have a wedding band that is yellow gold on the edges with a strip of white gold in the center. I don't like the design of the ring and I want to have it redone. The colour in the end is not important to me, I just want a regular old fashioned smooth, plain wedding ring. Is it possible to melt the two golds together?

    • ANSWER:
      yes. it can be melted.

it is going to be yellow gold after melted. so you could ask the jeweler to make a new yellow or white gold one which depends on which color you like!

you could not do it by yourself! have to be done by professional guy!

  14. QUESTION:
How to keep engagement ring/wedding band together without soldering?
My fiance and I are getting married in Mexico. She doesn't want the rings soldered before the wedding, as she wants to wear her engagement ring until the day of and then add the wedding band during the ceremony. Is there a way (some kind of clasp or something) to keep the rings together while we are on our honeymoon, before we get them soldered together?

    • ANSWER:
I would think twice about soldering the rings together. That will create a permanent change to the ring which you will not be able to undo. Your jeweler may have something to hold the two rings together. Or just take one of the rings on the honeymoon together. Make sure that both rings are insured in case either one of them is misplaced, lost, damaged or stolen.

      Good luck!

  15. QUESTION:
What kind of wedding band would match my engagement ring?
I have a heart shape white gold engagement ring. I recently bought an enhancer to add more diamonds to it. Now, I'm kind of confused as to what kind of band would go with it. Or wear the heart shape ring by itself without the enhancer, and get a band with diamonds? Suggestions please!

    • ANSWER:
Couldn't you just use the enhancer as the wedding band?

What to do with wedding band during basic training?
I'm about to go into army basic training at Ft Leonard Wood. I'm married and my wedding band has diamonds so I don't want to wear it. What are other females' experience with wedding bands? Did you just not wear anything and risk being hit on? Did you buy a cheap ring to wear?

    • ANSWER:
Either you leave it at home with your husband or it will be stored with the rest of your personal effects at basic. You will fill out a detailed list of your belongings before it is stored. It's sealed in a box or bag and returned to you upon graduation. Or you can buy a cheap ring if you like, but it's just best to leave it at home to keep it safe.

  19. QUESTION:
Does the wedding band go on the outside of the engagement ring during the wedding ceremony?
If the bride wears her engagement ring during the wedding ceremony, then the wedding band must be placed outside of it on the ring finger. However, the wedding band is traditionally worn on the inside. When does the order of the rings on the finger change, so that the wedding band is on the inside?

    • ANSWER:
According to the newest edition of Wedding Etiquette by Emily Post, the bride should wear the engagement ring on the RIGHT hand on the day of the ceremony. This way the wedding band can be placed immediately on the LEFT finger during the ceremony.

Alternately, a bride can wear the engagement ring on her left middle or pinky finger - but there's a chance of it getting stuck or slipping off.
A final alternative might be to have the bride slip her engagement ring off JUST PRIOR to the ring exchange - but this can offer the chance for a loss/mishap.

I wore my engagement ring on my right hand for the ceremony. NO ONE saw or noticed the difference, and directly after the ceremony I quietly slipped the engagement ring onto my left hand - and no one was the wiser.

  20. QUESTION:

  21. QUESTION:
Selling a wedding band to an international buyer instead of a local buyer, more risky?
I listed a wedding band on kijiji (a site similiar to craigs list) and I have to interested buyers. One of them is local and one is international. I am wondering if it would be too much of a risk to sell to the international buyer? They want to pay with Paypal. Could I get scammed? The Kijiji website states it's best to keep transactions local.

    • ANSWER:
PayPal is safe, and has protections in place for both buyers and sellers. Get your payment first, then be sure to ship with a method that will give you a tracking number, so that you have proof it was sent, and where it is in case the buyer tries to have PayPal reverse the transaction because he never received it.

Otherwise it's the buyer more at risk, and this is online classifieds, not eBay, there are less repercussions for a seller. Just use common sense and protect yourself!

  22. QUESTION:
How can I protect my wedding band, short of not wearing it?
I was just married last month, and if you looked at my wedding band you would think I am a construction worker (actually I am a female who works at a desk in an office). I take it off when doing disses or when noving things, but it still gets banged up. Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:

    • ANSWER:
platinum is great, and does not color with age. however, it must be sized using special laser. when jewelers dont have on, and most dont, they use white gold. platinum also scratches easily, and it turns it a bit grey. it requires a special buffer to get the scratched out, but you can buff it as many times as you want without a lot of wear on the metal. it is a very strong metal.

palladium is in the platinum family and much like platinum, but is lighter and does not scratch as easily. it is a brighter white in color. it also tends to be cheaper.

titanium it very lightweight, and almost indestructable. it is also hypoallergenic. it is much easier to polish than platinum or palladium. it cannot be resized however, and can be cut off with only an extreme amount of difficulty. titanium is often used for tension set rings, which makes it a little easier to get it off in an emergency. the stone can be removed which allows for the ring to be pried apart. but even tension settings cannot be sized.

  25. QUESTION:
How much should the man's wedding band cost?
My fiance and I are planning a wedding for 2010 (I know it's a year away) & I'm searching for a wedding band for him. He is Irish, so I want to get him an Irish or Celtic wedding band. The only problem is I don't know on average how much should be spent on the man's ring. I don't want to spend only or something, but I also don't want to spend too much. Any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
It depends on how extravagant you want to go! If he wants little diamonds or stones, you're going to pay a pretty penny. However, most men just want a regular band. I bought my husband a 10 karat white gold band with small crosses etched into the sides. It's beautiful, he loves it, and it only cost me about 0. which included a lifetime warranty! Plain bands can go anywhere from .-0. depending on the metal and weight. I would say though, definitely get a gold or platinum band because they last longer, or tungsten. Many people like for theirs to kind of match the bride's ring. And if the jeweler offers a warranty, take it! They are usually a certain percent of the ring cost and they cover just about everything! My husbands ring was I think 0. and the warranty was like .50 or something. Congratulations and good luck!

Where is the wedding band soposed to be at?
I am not married yet, but I am engaged. And I have been wondering what the tradition is for where the wedding band is soposed to be...on the inside of the engagement ring; closest to the heart.....or on the outside on the engagement ring so that the center diamond is closest to the heart?

Please no answers saying I can have it whatever way I want it, I just want to know what it is soposed to be traditionally, thank you!

    • ANSWER:
Traditionally you wear the wedding band closest to your heart. The day of the wedding you shoudl either have someone hold it or what I believe is you put it on your right hand on the ring finger...sooo when you do your vows the wedding band is put on a naked finger and then on your way to the rehearsal put your engagement ring back over the wedding band.

  29. QUESTION:
What kind of wedding band should I get for him?
I'm trying to find a good wedding band for my fiancee that is VERY durable. He works with his hands, many times coming home with scrapes and bruises he's not even aware of. I've been looking at titanium rings, but I want assurance that it's the right purchase. Opinions and other reccomendations are more than welcome.

    • ANSWER:
Titanium and stainless steel are both good choices. The drawbacks to them are that they can't be resized so if it doesn't fit him at another stage in life, he'll need a new one. You could go with an XOE ring. It is two rings in one where the outer one is exposed to the elements but the inner ring that is around his finger will be safely tucked under the outer ring to keep it from getting scratched. My friend got one for her husband and she engraved it in her own handwriting and it looks beautiful! You can google them to find some stores that sell them. My friend got her husband's from http://stores.jewelryninja.com/-strse-Wedding-cln-Wedding-Band-cln-XOE-Collection/Categories.bok

  30. QUESTION:
what type of wedding band goes with multiple diamonds on engagement ring?
The engagement ring has one large center stone and eight smaller stones, 4 on each side. all round cut. Don't know what type of wedding band to get to go with it. Help with ideas.

    • ANSWER:
Choose a wedding band that compliments your engagement ring and adds to its beauty. I would go for a wedding band that has diamonds cut in similar shape and are of the same color as your engagement ring. The two rings should look like they belong together (like you and your fiance). Shop around until you find the right look. I found good info about diamonds on this site:

      All the best.

  31. QUESTION:

My fiance and I want to get our nicknames for each other but only the initials (they're sort of sexual) for both. Do you think we would have to explain that to everyone or could it be something that stays between us? What is engraved in your wedding band?

    • ANSWER:
You do whatever you wish to do.
Sexual nicknames engraved into your rings sounds like a great idea to me. I wish we had thought of it when we were married.
I'm wishing you the greatest married life ever. Even as good as ours (41 years).
We never had anything engraved in our rings. You've given me a great 42nd anniversary present idea. Thank you.

  32. QUESTION:
Where can I find the cheapest diamond wedding band but are good quality ?
Where can I find the cheapest diamond wedding band but are good quality ?

    • ANSWER:
Saul, Personally I would rephrase the question eliminating cheapest to limited budget. Otherwise you will get many negative posts. The bottom line, if you are serious, is to set aside a budgeted amount you would like to spend. Good diamond wedding sets are not cheap but that does not mean you have to pay more then what it is worth. Find a local jeweler who will work with you and a budget. Become educated on the types of diamonds and quality. Your budgeted amount may go up which means you will need to save more. Remember, marriage is not a temporary thing, it is forever and the ring she wears should be everlasting like your proposed marriage. Again, research and work with a local jeweler, not department stores or chains.

  38. QUESTION:
Could I be having an allergic reaction to my 18k wedding band?
I have noticed lately that whenever I put my wedding band on within 5 minutes my arm starts to ache, almost like I have a pinched nerve or strained muscled starting at my ring finger and goes down to my elbow. But as soon as I take my band off, it goes away. My skin is very hard on metals, but I always thought since this was the real deal it wouldn't happen. Could I be having a reaction anyway?

    • ANSWER:
Gold has other metals included, such as brass, copper, etc. to which you are allergic.

18K is just a thin layer on top of the other metal.

You might have to ask your husband to get you a Platinum ring.
      Platinum seldom shows a reaction.

      (*..*)

  40. QUESTION:
Is it safe to always wear your wedding band?
I haven't taken my wedding band/engagement ring off since the wedding which was about a week ago.

Is it ok to shower with it, and such? I haven't been using any chemicals while cleaning up our apartment, but if I do I had planned on taking it off only then.

A few family members have said it's not good for diamonds to be worn while taking a shower though, is this true?

    • ANSWER:
You aren't going to ruin the ring wearing it all the time - - with the exception of when cleaning because you could have harsh chemicals causing damage to the setting.

However, it is in the best interest of you to not wear it when sleeping or excercising because your hands could swell at those times and wearing any ring is not good if you are swelling.

It is also a good idea to take the ring off when showering and washing your hands because the soap can leave a residue on the ring. It won't cause damage but you will need to clean it more.

  41. QUESTION:
Is a married man socially obligated to wear his wedding band?
My dad does not wear his wedding band in public or in private. Now he and my mom have a great marriage. They've been married for over 35 years. Even as a kid I've never seen him wear it. It seems that almost all other married men wear theirs however. I've never asked either one of them about it. My mother has never mentioned it and does not seem to care. How would you feel if you were in this situation? Would you approve or disapprove?

    • ANSWER:
married men or women for that matter are socially obligated to wear a wedding band. There are a lot of people who don't wear their wedding bands for reasons of safety while at work, such as mechanics. So to keep from forgetting to take it off or to keep from loosing it if they do take it off they just don't wear it.

I have not wore my wedding ring for 24 years for the reason that I was an airplane mechanic and couldn't for safety reasons.

  42. QUESTION:
Is it possible to make a wedding band larger?
Either my wedding band has shrunk or my finger has grown. Is it possible to have it resized? I know they can go smaller, but can they go larger?

It costs more to go larger, because they have to add metal, but any good jeweler can do it. Make sure you take it in person, do not use an internet jeweler that offers resizing.

  43. QUESTION:
What is the origination of the wedding band ring?
Who made the first wedding band?
What country did it originate in?

Legend has it that the first wedding rings were crafted in ancient Egypt about 2200 B.C. At the time, it was simply a link to the eternal, symbolizing love. Later, it became part of a binding agreement, proving that a woman belonged to a man. Now, it symbolizes a little of both.

  44. QUESTION:
Where can I find a men's wedding band in a different shape?
My fiancee says he doesn't like the typical round wedding band, that he wants a band in the shape of a bolt. Any ideas where I can find this?

    • ANSWER:
You should look online. Google "alternative wedding bands," or "bolt-shaped rings," and something will likely turn up. It's not something you're going to find in a traditional jewelry store.

Don't forget to remind your fiance, though, that a bolt-shaped ring probably isn't going to be that comfortable to wear every day. If that's what he wants, fine, but he might be better off getting a round ring with some unconventional embellishment, like a tribal pattern, on it.

  45. QUESTION:
How do you feel about a single person wearing a wedding band?
I'm a man that likes ring (moderately, as in one is enough) and I bought myself a wedding band, since all the men rings are the solitaire kind. I wear it on my left hand since I'm not used to wearing things on my right. I was just wondering how people felt about this(not that it would change my opinion :P ).

    • ANSWER:
I sometimes wear an engagement ring when I just want to be left alone and I would assume (if I knew you were single) that you were doing the same thing. If you do fancy chatting someone up in future I would recommend removing it though!

I'm recently engaged. I have a beautiful new ring. I don't generally like the look of two rings, even if they are made to match. Can I just use my engagement ring as a wedding band?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, you certainly may. There are no rules about what constitutes a wedding ring - at the end of the day, a wedding ring is a ring given in honor of your wedding vows. It can look however you want it to look, and it can certainly be your engagement ring.

  48. QUESTION:
Are there bad effects of wearing a wedding band constantly?
My Dad who is 79 has never taken off his wedding band. It doesn't come off and my mother died died 4 years ago. Now that he is old and getting older, I can't help but think that that isn't sanitary. It seems like the gold could leech into your body. Can you provide information or insight? I am single so I have never worn a wedding band.

    • ANSWER:
My parents wear theirs all the time but they do take it off to shower and to sleep. I feel that all skin needs time to breath and that keeping any form of jewelry on for more than 12 hours can be bad. I think you should ask a few doctors to get a better opinion on this. Although real gold shouldn't harm a person I hear weird things all the time about things that happen to people that never happen before.

  50. QUESTION:
Difference between a wedding band and a ring?
I know you give the wedding band at the wedding but do they look different at all?

    • ANSWER:
Typically for women the ring is referring to the engagement ring and the band is a less intricate component that is given during the ceremony. The ring typically has a larger stone and more decoartion, while the band is solid or comprised od tiny diamonds. Lots of people buy their wedding ring in a set that comes with a band and a ring, but you can also buy them separately. I've seen more and more women just going for a band lately, so if you only have a band that's what you would exchange at the wedding!
