   We just bought our wedding bands this past weekend, the wedding is 3 months away. Not sure if we should engrave them or not. The thing is, my ring was super expensive (my fiance was adamant on me having that specific one) so we wound up getting him a tungsten ring for now to save money and are planning to upgrade him to platinum too on our 1 year anniversary. Should we even bother getting them engraved if we are planning on changing his ring? Also, my engagement ring is not engraved, if that makes any difference.

   What do you think about sterling silver wedding bands? Can people tell it's not white gold?
   My future husband and I are using temperary rings for the ceremony until we save enough to get white gold later on. I'm wondering if lots of peopple get silver wedding bands, and can people tell it is sterling silver? It's stupid I know, but I don't want to be judged.

   • ANSWER:
     Sterling silver doesn't really pass for white gold. Silver gets a dull patina of small Scotchess and pits over time and can even turn a blackish green on some peoples hands. After the first few weeks it would be hard to convince most people that a silver band was really gold. It is possible to have sterling silver coated with lacquer that prevents tarnish for a period of time and will preserve that new look.
     I would go and talk to some jewelers and find out what the price difference between silver and gold would be first before I went out to buy.

10. QUESTION:
    Why do gay men wear wedding bands when they are not married?
    I have notice quite a bit in the professional world that guys (that have openly admitted they are gay) wear wedding bands. Not because they are married to another guy, but because they feel they will be better received by other professionals.

    Just curious as to your thoughts on this.

      Under the law in some states this might be legally true, but they have taken vows of fidelity to each other and in their hearts they are married.

    Is it okay to wear wedding bands before the wedding?
    We aren't getting married until this summer, but already have bought our wedding bands. Since mine is a wrap around the engagement ring, I'm wearing mine, but is it okay for my fiance to wear his before the wedding?

      No. Your rings are a symbol. They are given at the ceremony. Why bother spending thousands on a wedding when you "look" married already?

    I have a yellow gold wedding band and engagement ring. I really like the look of the white gold. Is it possible to cover or electroplate them? I really don't want to get new bands.

      yes, you can have a jeweler do it

      but i would not recomend it
      real gold is very soft

      that is why it is hardened with nickel.

      you did not specify if the gold you wanted to cover was pure or an alloy.

      They don't have to match a bit.

      Mine is a diamond band that wraps around my engagement ring. It is white gold.

      His is a titanium band with Celtic crosses engraved along the band.

      Different metals and different styles!

      You just have to love them!

    Where can I find cheap wedding ring bands?
    My fiance and I are getting married next month. Everything is taking care of except some last minute things. We cannot afford very expensive wedding bands right now so we both agreed we would just get cheaper rings to last us til we can afford to get the rings we really want so we don't start off our marriage as broke. Where can we find cheap (-30) wedding bands (BESIDES WALMART) that won't turn our fingers green?

      It may sound strange now, but our grandparents use to make rings out of silver coins; see the YouTube video below.

      Use a quarter or half dollar from 1964 or earlier (90% silver is almost sterling). Use a spoon instead of a hammer (it takes longer but the ring will warp less and be rounder). You may find that your handmade rings are more special than expensive store-bought bands.

      Palladium offers a great price alternative to Platinum. It is a metal that will be hard to work with if you are considering intricate designs. Platinum is white. Palladium is white, but not as white – kind of has a darker cast to it ( you can try looking at the two metals side by side yourself). Lastly Palladium is lighter than Platinum. If all of those points are not show stoppers, it’s worth saving 00.

    My husband and I got our wedding bands from Reed's Jewelers in summer of 2005. They are scratched and scuffed up quite a bit. Will it cost anything to take them in to have them cleaned and buffed?

    Are wedding bands suppose to weigh the the same amount?
    My fiance & I were talking last night & he asked me if I have ever heard that the wedding bands are suppose to weigh the same amount. This is suppose to symbolize equality in the marriage. He said he was told this by his grandmother. I'm usually up on my old wives tales, but I've never heard this one. Just wondering if anyone else has ever heard of this.

      No, that's crazy and not even remotely feasible, as most men's bands are twice the size of ladies. They'd have to be awfully thin to weigh the same due to the size difference.

    My engagement ring doesnt match any wedding bands. What to do? ?
    I really want a wedding band. However all bands seem to make it look lopsided. Any advice? Should i wear a right hand ring wedding band?

      Try looking at wraps that your e-ring fits into. A wrap looks like having 2 wedding bands, one on each side of your e-ring. I think they're also called enhancers. Ask your married friends where they got their rings and hit the pavement and go to those stores, I'm sure you can find something.

23. QUESTION:
    Does anyone know what the cons of Platina 4 are, in regards to wedding bands?
    My fiancé and I are looking into wedding bands at the moment. We have found a ring we might get, but it is made of Platina 4. Does anyone know any problems or trouble with this type of metal?

    • ANSWER:
      If you don't have metal allergies then just stick to plain gold. What you've found is an alloy for people with metal allergies and there is a high silver content. Like any gold or platinum alloy, it will eventually dull and get a yellowish patina (they say it won't tarnish, but all that glitters eventually will). This is common, but it does require a bit up upkeep.
      White golds and platinum will eventually dull and require re-rhodium plating. This is not a difficult job but it can be a bit costly (~ a plating) and you'll probably have to do it about once a year to keep your rings looking brand new. Unlike yellow gold, white gold and platinum can't be polished or buffed to look brand new.
      If you can, just buy a white gold or a platinum band instead of the Platina 4 mix. Unless you have money to spare (or a metal allergy) white gold and platinum will look essentially the same to the untrained eye so you may as well just buy white gold unless you like the weight of platinum. A platinum band will cost you about three times what a gold band would.
      Platina 4 is kind of a cheesy alternative to platinum or white gold. The lesser price tag is nice, but I wouldn't want a lifetime with the materials involved.
      In all honesty, I think the best thing people can buy is yellow gold. It's the easiest in the long run. Unfortunately, a lot of people just don't like the yellow color.

24. QUESTION:
    What's the difference between 3mm & 4mm wedding bands?
    My husband has a 3mm and I've got a 4mm wedding band. Do both bands have the same amount of gold in them?
    My ring is 4mm and his is 3mm. Both are 10K. Will both have the same amount of gold?

    • ANSWER:
      I assume you're talking about the width of the ring?

      A 3mm band is 3mm wide, and a 4mm band would be 4mm wide, a 1mm difference in width.

      Chances are the 4mm band has more gold in it, definitely so if they are equally thick, but the 4mm could have the same amount or less gold content if it is thinner.

      Ignore this if you wish, since it may just confuse you: I don't think this is what you were getting at, but the 4mm could also have less gold content if it is, for example, 9k gold while the 3mm is 18k gold (the higher the karat, the more actual gold content [aka: less filler]).

    I want the safest, and best way to get top dollar for my wedding bands. They were never worn, wedding never took place. I am not comfortable trying to sell them on ebay.

      Either take them to a local reputable jeweler, or a pawn shop, or post a classified ad in your local newspaper. Or, best case, get a refund (or at least a store credit) from the jeweler where they were purchased.

    Is it customary to have both the woman's engagement and wedding bands engraved?

      If you do it, engrave the bands only. However, it's not required that this be done - and you might have left it too late if the wedding is in 2 weeks.

    Hi. I have a couple who's married in my short film and I want their wedding bands to be seen on screen. Where can I found fake ones? Any idea / site / store? I haven't been able to find someone who is willing to loan me one. So I'm gonna have to buy them . Any suggestions?

      If you're filming plain bands, just take any ring and turn it around so the stone/top is not visible and the plain band is. Otherwise, go to any accessory store - Clairs, the Icing, and you can buy fake ones. For the guy's ring, you'll need a thicker band, and can get a silver one (fake white gold... he he) for 20 bucks at any mall (usually there is a silver jewelry stand/cart.

    Alternative to wedding bands due to skin condition?
    My fiancee and I are starting to pick our wedding bands, but he has very bad eczema on his hands. Is there a certain type of metal that won't agitate his skin? Or even different types of wedding bands? What about tattoos? (Neither of us would have a problem with a tattoo, but I still would like a traditional wedding band.)

      Why don't you wear the wedding band - and let him go without it? It's not like he really needs it as long as he's a loving and honorable man. Also, I don't think a tatoo would be good for someone with eczema.

      I'm not sure where you live, but I know a really good jeweler from Wasilla, Alaska that my husband and I were going to go to get our wedding bands custom made. (I forget why we didn't end up doing it) But he's fantastic. The owner's name is Cary and the shop is called Moonstone. I'm not sure if he has a website or anything, but it might be something worth looking into. His prices are really reasonable too.

    What types of wedding bands work well with a solitaire, cathedral setting engagement ring?
    My finace is trying to get some ideas on the best type of wedding band to pair with her engagement ring. The engagement ring is an 18kt white gold, cathedral setting with a solitaire, round brilliant diamond, 1.75tw. I would appreciate any thoughts on the type of wedding band that would work well with the engagement ring. She is pretty traditional when it comes to jewelry. Right now, we both think something with a little "sparkle" may work best with the solitaire diamond. Any thoughts or recommended resources would be greatly appreciated. We're trying to get some ideas together prior to going to the jeweler. Thanks to all who respond!!

      I have to respond to this. Sarolite, I may not know you, but I designed that ring in your first link quite some time ago. It's probably a copy as I notice some gaps between the stones I didn't intend.

      Anyway...To the Groom Guy, when you say 1.75tw (tw=total weight) that implies other stones, are there any? A near perfect match to the cathedral can be done. Depending on how wide the engagement ring is, a wrap or a guard may not be practical. You want to keep this "everyday wearable." If you want additional stones for the band, certainly diamond, you will probably be looking at something at least 3mm wide. A .03ct diamond is 2mm wide. This I give for reference. Ideally you want at least 1mm gold on either side to hold. Depending on how wide you want the band, this will come into play. This would (.03 ct dia's) render out to 4mm wide. The best way to gauge how wide you want the band to be is to try on bands of different widths. Any decent jewelry store should have a selection of bands available. Even if they are yellow, the width is what you are selecting. From there you can plan the stones.

      Here's what I see, a band matching the slope of the ring, dipping down across the apex to draw attention in to the center stone...I wish I could include a picture of this...Diamonds channel set across the band.

      I hope the picture is somewhat clear to you. Should you speak with a designer about this, they will know exactly what I'm getting at. The number of diamonds for the band is entirely up to you. Properly made, more can be added later.

      This is a ring I would love to make. Kind of wish I was back on the bench again.

    Are my moms 1922 14k wedding bands worth more as gold or as rings?
    My grandma ended up with 2 14k gold wedding bands from october 1,1922 during some sort of auction years ago, my mom is getting together old gold jewelry she doesn't wear to sell and my grandma gave them to us. We then realized hold old they were, would it be worth more to sell them as jewelry or as gold?

      You NEVER get much money when you sell gold jewelry as gold, it just doesn't weigh enough and the gold is not pure - pure gold is 24KT so an item that is 12KT is only 50% gold in the first place. If these things must be sold try to sell them as jewelry.

      It could be she's a widow, divorced (and not quite ready to let go), maybe she's developed arthritis and the ring doesn't fit anymore, maybe it's a dead parent's ring. You can always just ask. Maybe it's not a ring at all - the circle pendants are very popular nowadays.

      YES!!! That way if anything happens to them you can be covered. Also if any of the rings have stones in them, make sure that you get the stones mapped, that way if for any reason you feel your stones may have been switched out for ones of lesser quality you can prove it.

      My husband was told no jewelry period at basic training. I know that even those that wore there wedding bands there have taken them off and have them tucked away, Its too difficult to maintain and get in the way when learning weapons etc.
      You will be seperated from any guys and banned from even looking in there direction so the only thing you need to be worried about is your training.

    I would prefer to stay away from mall jewelers and am seeking stores that have a larger and better variety of men's wedding bands in the Portland area. I have been to Shane Co. and Jared's but both had the same generic looks and I would like to find more options. Thanks.

      Malls actually have quite good variety of stores. It would be a good idea to tray Washington Square or Lloyd Center Jewelry stores. Ben Bridge could have quite unique collection. There are also Helzberg Diamonds, Friedlanders, Kay Jewelers and others. If you would not be able to find anything there, look for Jewelry stores downtown Portland. Many of them are rather unique.

    Why do women transpose their wedding bands after they married? (place it behind the engagement ring)?
    Many women who have an engagement ring have their wedding bands placed in front, but after the ceremony, they place the band behind the engagement. Why is that? Are there traditions associated with this?

      In some cultures the wedding ring is the same ring as the engagement ring and merely has its name changed at the time of marriage while other cultures have two distinctive rings.

      Though the custom of giving the bride a ring at the ceremony dates back centuries and was originally tied to an exchanging of valuables between the two families, the double ring ceremony in which the groom also is given a ring did not come into play until the early 1900s. Even at that time only roughly 10% of weddings included double ring ceremonies, it wasn’t until the late 1940s that the majority of weddings consisted of the groom being given a ring as well.

      The placement of the wedding ring on the bride is also open to some interpretation. One tradition states that the wedding ring should be worn at the base of the finger so as to be closer to the heart of the bride; the engagement ring is then placed above the wedding ring. Another tradition states that the wedding ring is worn above the engagement ring so as to symbolically include the engagement ring and its meanings within the wedding vows.

    Do wedding bands and engagement rings come as a package?
    Im not about to pop the question but i was wondering if wedding bands and engagement rings would come as a package so that they would match better on the girls hand. If not, which of the two is better to splurge more money on? the engagement ring or wedding band. (this is for lady's wedding bands and engagement rings...not the man's wedding band)

      Most aren't a "package," but some do "match" or come from similar collections.

      People usually don't buy them at the same time (in case the answer is a "no" or they just want to wait).

      Don't worry -- if you don't buy a wedding band now, you'll still DEFINITELY find a matching one later! There's so many out there!

      The lady's engagement ring is better to splurge on -- it's a commitment thing, and usually those have diamonds, while many women wear plain bands. Spend more on the "bling bling" ring now and less on the simpler ring later.

      Also, don't you think it'd be better if you bought wedding bands together? =)

    can army officers wear wedding bands while in uniform?
    My husband refuses to wear his wedding band. At first it was because he was in flight school and I understood that. But now that he is not in flight school he still refuses to wear one. Now its because its uncomfortable. It will never be comfortable if he never wears it! Help!

      Army Regulation 670-1 allows us to wear two rings, one on each hand. That is male or female. So you often see male Soldiers with a graduation ring and a wedding band. Also the Army considers and engagement ring and a wedding ring as one ring so you see women wearing that on one hand and another on the other. Also the rings can't be crazy "bling" but conservative jewelry.

      I also don't wear my ring because after 25 years it is uncomfortable and doesn't fit very well.

    Does Zales offer any insurance or cleaning on men's wedding bands?
    I am wanting to get my fiance's wedding band from zales, and the one he wants is only available online. It doesn't say anything on the website about any sort of warranty or anything on it, it only talks about "free lifetime cleaning and polishing for zales diamond jewelry". His wedding band does not have any diamonds in it though.

      Call your local Zales store. Give them the item # and they can have it ordered to the store and when you get there to pick it up you can purchase a warranty on it which includes cleaning and such. There are different plans to choose from ranging from one year to lifetime ...depending on how much you want to spend. I suggest you go for lifetime, bc I can gurantee you the first year won't need any maintence on it so you just waited $ on it.

    Where can I get catalogs of men's wedding bands?
    I am getting a lot of catalogs in the mail since I became engaged from sites that I have signed up for, like the one where we have our wedding website on. I'm still lost for what kind of wedding band to get my fiance though. Where do I get catalogs in the mail that specialize in mens wedding bands?

    Will pawn shops buy engraved wedding bands?
    I found a platinum and gold wedding band some years back and thought I would try to sell it. The only problem is that I have been trying to check online if pawnshops will buy an "engraved" ring and can find no information. Obviously the ring isn't mine and the engraving just says the names of two people and a date. Will the pawn shop still buy it even though the ring is clearly not mine?

      Yup!
      That engraving can be easily filed off and replaced with a new one. Also sometimes they're just interested in the gem or metal to melt down.
      Either or, they'll take it.

      While I am not familiar with any "Indian (India) Jewelry stores " in Massachusetts which will meet your needs, I can't help but think that you may want to consider some of the many Asian jewelry stores as they use a high quality gold (22k-24k) in their jewelry.

    Where is a good website to find wedding bands?
    My fiance and I have been looking around in the stores (like Kay Jewelers, Zales, Helzberg Diamonds) but we haven't found anything we like! The wedding bands these stores carry are all the same... so generic! Does anyone know of any great websites to buy wedding bands from? Thanks in advance!!
