QUESTION:
"miss havisham's" wedding cake ideas?
In my english class, our assignment is to create the horrendous looking cake spoken of in the novel "Great Expectations". However, the cake still has to taste delicious. Does anyone have any ideas as to what kind of cake I could bake and how I could make it look disgusting and aged without sacrificing taste? I would like it to be a layer cake, since it is supposed to be a wedding cake. Thanks for all your help!!-
ANSWER:
I'll go with my interpretation of horrendous to Miss Havisham in what I think is a great cake. Any off-kiltered layer cake, white frosting, how ever you can get it on, throw crushed Oreo's over and around it, gummy worms sticking out, but the most important part of this cake........... the top is the face of a clock, you pick the time. Just an Idea and an Interpretation of that part of the story.

QUESTION:
I need help with a large wedding cake, ideas?
Our wedding will consist of 1,500 to 2,000 guests. I want a simple and elegant cake.
Where would I find something like this or who can make a cake this big?
It's a very big wedding!-
ANSWER:
You'll probably have a large cake at the reception with a bunch of full sheet cakes in the back to serve from also.A cake that large will be enormous and very heavy to move/transport.
Your best bet is to go to a local cake shop and talk to them about it.
Or, have your wedding planner figure out these details.

Hi. My suggestion would be....do you have a local bakery in mind? Why not go in to your local bakery....or a bakery where your wedding will take place and chat with them. Most will set up an appointment for a taste testing.So....you could take a picture in, if you want, but they will have lots of pictures also from previous wedding cakes that they have done!
Do you want all white....and them some lavender flowers?

QUESTION:
Small wedding cake ideas?
I'm only going to have about 20 people at my wedding. I want to have a cake but most bakers are telling me that they make cakes for 30+. I'd like to save some money, too. The idea of a sheet cake or cupcakes makes me shudder. Any good ideas?-
ANSWER:
I'm sorry you're going through this. Getting my wedding cake was such a hassle, too. I really hated my vendor but had to use them because of where we were having our reception.Perhaps if you don't go in requesting a "wedding cake" you'll get better cooperation from the bakers in your area. They hear those words and get stuck in a rut: "these are our wedding cake options and this is what they cost -- no deviations."
I had 14 people at my wedding. I ordered a small two-tier stacked cake and it worked out great. The top layer was a 6" round (chocolate) and the larger layer was an 8" round (white). I think we were charged for 20 people. We didn't get to choose the exact flavors and fillings that we wanted because the cake was so small, but as long as you stick with the basics, you should be fine. They did decorate it exactly how we wanted.
The web sites below have photos that you could bring with you to a bakery to demonstrate:

QUESTION:
Any wedding cake ideas?
I want something out of the ordinary(as far as taste goes NOT design already got that picked out!)
Any ideas?(as far as icing, decorations on the cake, and the cake flavor goes)
AND does anyone know if Coldstones Creamery would make a wedding cake?
If so that would be pretty freakin awesome!
-
ANSWER:
I work for an ice cream shop not coldstone and we do make ice cream wedding cakes. before you decide to go with them ask alot of questions. I've been doing this for 15 years and can make cakes look like a picture and if I can't I let the customer know up front. Also they probably aren't usually in the business of delivering and setting up wedding cakes. getting your cake very cold with the help of dry ice is the key to it all. But your photo opportunity time is still very limited. Have a pretty cake for pictures. Some bakeries have dummy (display)cakes made from styro-foam they might rent to you. Then keep your ice cream cakes in the freezer and cut them before serving. Have your caterer check with the ice cream cake place so they know how to temper the cake so it can easily be cut and not be glop.

ANSWER:
This is a great idea: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/194/523383830_572c05a587.jpg?v=0
You can pick up fondont (http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat3254&PRODID=prd29680) at a local craft store like AC Moore, Joanne Fabrics or Michaels. It's really easy to roll out and cut into shapes like in the picture.Or you could try piping on a design like this:
http://www.houseofanoria.com/Costume_Supplies/Ornate_Medieval-Trims/GreekKeyMetallic_Blk_Slv874.jpg
But it might be tough if you've never piped before. I would stick with fondont because its easier to work with. This looks VERY simple, but lovely and it wouldnt be too hard to do:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3335/3477512805_72cd796850.jpgFor overal icing advice I recommend using the fondont. Just give the cakes a decent layer of regular icing, not too thick. Then roll out the fondont to about 1/4" inch thick. Wet the back of the fondont and smooth the fondont over the cake wet side onto the iced cake. Cut off the excess fondont then decorate. You can die fondont different colors to match your theme. It sounds scary but I did 1 round cake at the beginning of my wedding planning to see how it turned out. It looked really nice and I had never done it before! Its kind of like playing with play dough, although fondont is thicker and harder. You could just use buttercream but its harder to make themed designs/shapes with a piping bag than it is with just cutting it out of fondont.
In the end I had to purchase the cake from my wedding venue, but I am no longer afraid to experiment with fondont. I hope it works out for you!

Decoration ideas for Royal wedding cake?
My parent's street are having a party for the royal wedding on the 29th April (any excuse for a party that lot!) I have said that I will make a cake for it as I love baking, however I have no idea what to do for decoration. I was thinking about two figures for it, but that's all I can think of. Does anyone have any different ideas? It will probably be a sponge cake or something similar, not fruit as a couple of the people are allergic to some stuff in fruit cakes.
Thanks!-
ANSWER:
Definitely include some union jacks; either as flag decorations or coloured icing. Also you could use squirty icing to write the names 'Kate and William' on it. Finally, if a bit tacky, you could put some sparklers in the cake to add a bit of theatre!

QUESTION:
I am looking for ideas to substitute for wedding cake. I hate cake, any ideas? Thanks everyone for your ideas!! You have been a great help!
-
ANSWER:
A chocolate fountain would be a nice alternative to a traditional cake. The presentation can be as simple or as grand as you'd like. Chocolate for fountains comes in different colors... regular brown, white, or even pink. Guest can dip marshmallows, cookies, or fruit under the fountain. If you used some of the less expensive fountains available, you could have fountain stations set up around the hall.I've also heard of people stacking different kinds of pastries (like donuts) to take the place of the cake. That way, everyone gets their own serving, and you can still play all the wedding cake "games" at the wedding if you're so inclined.

If you're looking for individual cakes, have you seen these: http://www.debbiebrownscakes.co.uk/dream_wedding_cakes/pages/retro%20roses_jpg.htm or these: http://media.photobucket.com/image/mini%20wedding%20cakes%20ball%20pictures/sweetcakesdesign/minicakes007.jpgIf you're having a December wedding, this would be neat: http://www.flickr.com/photos/weddingcakes/75200976/
Or January: http://weddibles.wed-central.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/snowflake-cake.jpg
A cake will be cheaper than a lot of mini cakes would be, even for the same number of servings. Cupcakes are probably the cheapest but you're right, they've been a big enough trend lately that people have probably seen them at enough weddings.
Here are some really original cupcakes: http://sugarbloomcupcakes.blogspot.com/2009/05/tall-cupcakes-tutorial.html
As far as wedding cake trends go, whenever the economy is making a comeback from a really troubled time, wedding cakes get much bigger and more elaborate, so don't be too surprised if you start seeing a trend toward taller, more over-the-top cakes in the next year or so.

two of my best friends are gay and they are having a commitment ceremony next month. they wanted some help so i said i would take care of the cake and the wedding favors. they wanted to incorporate the rainbow theme but they didn't want it to be too much. i was wondering if anyone has any cute ideas for the cake and favors or if someone has had this theme and had pictures or any ideas i could use. i really appreciate it!!-
ANSWER:
You could maybe do cup cakes with little plastic rainbow toppers. Or if they want a more traditional cake I'm sure you could find a rainbow cake topper on line, just google it. For a favore you could do skitles in a little tulle bag. BTW: I think it's awsome your friends are doing this. So many people just don't understand how important this is to gay couples. I'm strait, but have many gay friends and family members. Tell them CONGRATULATIONS !!!!

Cute wedding cake topper ideas?
What is the strangest, coolest, most interesting wedding cake topper that you have seen? And Im not talking about the one where the groom is running away from the bride b/c those kind of bother me. I like the idea of monchichi bride and groom(toy from the 70s/80s) cake topper cause it is a inside joke between me and my fiance but im sure our guest will think we are weird... What are your opinions?-
ANSWER:

QUESTION:
Any nice wedding cake ideas?
My fiance and I are looking for a nice large wedding cake. If you have seen one online somewhere could you link it for us to see? Thanks!-
ANSWER:
It's sometimes taxing, because these sites literally have hundreds of cakes online, but it's the best representation of wedding cakes I have seen on the Internet. You are sure to find some ideas, and the great thing about looking at so many is that once you decide on a general look for the cake (i.e. square tiers versus hexagonal versus round; chocolate versus white; buttercream versus fondant; you get the idea...), then you can mix and match some of the styles, or maybe find your dream cake and recreate it. These have the best quality photos as well. I have found some of the bakers' sites to have poor pictures and a waste of my time.

QUESTION:
Any wedding cake backdrop ideas?
My wedding reception is being held in the gymnasium at my church. I'm working super hard to try and make it look spiffy. I'm trying to figure out what I can use as the backdrop for the wedding cake. The floors and walls are all this slate gray color so a white cake against that wouldn't look good. ANY ideas would be helpful! Thanks in advance guys!
God Bless!-
ANSWER:
you know what would be cool?blow up a favorite photo of the two of you to poster size!! It isn't too expensive, for example, Shutterfly has a 20"x30" one for ! or get a few smaller ones (still big enough to see from across the room) and make a collage!
Another idea is to ask around and see if anyone you know has one of those folding screens - you know the kind - some look like shutters, others like doors, some are wicker and some have spots for photos, and some look asian. If you don't like the look of the one someone has, you could always drape some pretty fabric over it.
The last idea I had (harder to do) would be to get helium balloons in your colors and bunch them with different lengths of ribbon so they are at all heights behind the cake (weights at the bottom of the ribbons to hold them in place)

QUESTION:
garden wedding instead of cake ideas?
i dont want a cake for my wedding, instead i want something more unique and original...any ideas for my victorian garden wedding?>
also, im planning on having chocolate covered strawberries, raspberries, and candied almonds...-
ANSWER:
I, too, like the idea of scones. Since you're going w/ the Victorian Garden theme, it would be wonderful, and very fitting not to have cake!I like the idea of tarts, but I would have the caterer do tartlets (smaller versions) so that people can eat them in one bite. A big English trifle would be nice. People can do self-serve, or have individual trifles sitting out for people to grab. Tortes and fruited cookie bars can also be very elegant. I like the scones idea as well. Finally, do it comfort food style: warm chocolate chip cookies with ice cold milk would be a great addition to your dessert platters.
Good idea. Congrats.

What are some different ideas for wedding cake designs?-
ANSWER:
i wouldnt put too much money into the cake.
our wedding cake was all white with cream on the edges and surface that looked like lace. and we had real dark red roses.i really wanted a white cake that was covered completley with white edable roses. that would of been soooooo cool and different. but no one in europe made this kinds of cakes.
we had our wedding there so we planned and bought everything there. but our cake turned out great. it matched my dress and flowers.

Does anyone know of a good website to find wedding cake ideas or maybe even a bakery that has a good gallery of cake pictures? Thanks

The Knot is a great website but another idea is to search for local or national bakeries that do wedding cakes and look at their galleries, you will find tons of ideas. For example I searched for "wedding cakes in Chicago, IL" and one of the search results was this:http://www.roeserscakes.com/wedding.html

QUESTION:
Wedding cake and reception ideas needed, for fun young couple.?
We are planning an outside wedding and reception for 250 people in august in a walnut grove. Its a beautiful canopy of green walnut trees and grass. Its not formal. The colors are hot pink and orange.and Gerbera daisy and sunflowers are the flowers chosen. We'd like any orange and pink pictures of ceremony, flowers, decorations, centerpieces, and attire.-
ANSWER:
Sounds like it's going to be fun and laid-back.Here are some ideas:
* Put down a dance floor and hire a dj.
* Keep centerpieces organic and use your venue as inspiration. Use hot pink as your anchor color/central color and accent with the orange. With an outdoor reception, take your colors and accent them with the bright greens and yellows and browns in your surroundings.http://www.brides.com/planning/receptions/gallery/198400?f=664%3a2024&offset=1#slide_198406

QUESTION:
wedding cake???
I want a profitta roll cake for my wedding any idea of how much they cost to feed 80 people? Has anyone had one as a wedding cake, wgat did you think?-
ANSWER:
croquembouche (profiterole cakes) are a very traditional wedding cake and can be enormous. they are not great in hot weather because the spun toffee that holds them together can get soft. have a look at the images on the link below to get an idea of how they look and the sizes they can run to. you can have all sorts of fillings: cream, different custards etcGood pastisseries will make them especially ones that do French style pastries.
I don't know where you are, so I won't guess on the price but I am sure that phoning around will get you some ideas and comparative pricing.
Good luck.

QUESTION:
Beach wedding cake ideas?
I need help i have been looking and i like this onehttp://www.wedding-flowers-and-reception-ideas.com/images/beach-wedding-cake01.jpg
four tier
any ideas
thx yea the bottom part is going to be blue-
ANSWER:
It's very theme-like for a sea themed wedding... I would rather have the brown parts blue to symbolize the water because it doesn't seem pretty enough to me... but then you can always have beach sand sitting on the table under the cake. ... it just seems that the brown next to the seahorse doesn't translate well because the seahorse never comes out of the water, if you know what I mean.
i hope that makes sense to you and that I explained my thoughts well enough.

QUESTION:
Wedding Cake Decorating Ideas???
So last night me and my fiancee where talking about our wedding cake.
He said...that my best friends mother in-law makes cakes for a living and she might be able to hook us up with our wedding cake and it wont cost that much. What do you think would be a beautiful cake idea?
*He also doesnt want a big wedding...but rather mid-size or small. I was thinkinging maybe a 3-4 layer cake.*
I guess ill be spending some time with my best friends mother in-law for the cake decorating. Asking me if such and such is okay and if it looks right.
Just got to remember my best friend is like a Twin sister to me, we're close friends!-
ANSWER:
Maybe I'm being paranoid here, but I'd want to see/taste some of the work beforehand. Make sure she's done wedding cakes before & stuff with multiple tiers. As for your ideas, go to http://theknot.com -- they have literally hundreds of cake pictures. You have to create an account, but it's free. You can get great ideas from that.
Choose something that matches with the rest of your reception theme/colors.
Or you could have it match the embroidery on your dress. That's what I did, and it came out great. Pics with me & hubby standing behind it looked awesome too.

QUESTION:
How to get ideas for a 26th Wedding anniversary cake?
My BFF's parents are having one, probably just a small event with family and a few friends. Of course, their big 25th was last year. I just want to know how I can approach them and find their likes and how to apply the ideas to the cake. I don't want to go up to them and ask them straight out how they would like their cake to look like because I want it to be a surprise...-
ANSWER:
Well I think that you should let your friend what his/her parent's likes are- I'm sure they would have a pretty good idea of what they like. If not, I'm sure their son/daughter can be more vague about it and try not to drop any hints rather than having a sort-of-stranger coming up to them and asking them what their likes are for no apparent reason. As for general cake ideas, the colors and shapes, just type "anniversary" and "cakes" on Google Images and I'm sure you'll find plenty of inspiration. Good luck on your endeavours to build that perfect anniversary cake for your BFF's parents!
