Wedding Cakes Prices

The wedding cake is a big part of the reception, let alone the wedding itself. That said, it's always a good idea to know where you stand by finding out the average wedding cake prices and what you'll be expected to pay.

First and foremost, you should realize that most bakeries charge per aslicea rather than per acakea. This system will allow you to easily determine how much the whole wedding cake is going to cost, not to mention how much money you can spare for custom designs and cake icing.

Here is a Rundown of Wedding Cake Prices:

Simple Cake
: A simply made cake with just a few decorations, cheap icing, and a basic design will cost about 1 to 2 dollars per slice. If it's a small wedding with only about 100 or so people, you can spend about 0 to 0 and get a elegant cake that'll please everyone.

  2. QUESTION:
Does anyone know a good website that shows PRICING on wedding cakes?
I live in Oklahoma City and I was trying to find pricing on wedding cakes. I can find a bunch of designs, but nothing is really priced. I have literally NO CLUE what they might cost. So, if anyone knows of a website that has prices (even if it's not in the OKC area) I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
This is more general than what you're asking but might be helpful anyway. It's from CostHelper.com.

      ---

The cost of a wedding cake varies by type of cake, the kind of baker and geographic region.

      Typical costs:
The average cost of a wedding cake is 3, according to The Bridal Association of America.

For wedding cakes, most bakeries and pastry chefs charge by the slice. A low-end option would be a smaller tiered cake in chocolate or vanilla paired with a sheet cake for cutting for around .50 a slice.

A mid-range two- or three-tiered cake in a standard flavor such as chocolate, vanilla, carrot cake or lemon poppy seed with buttercream icing and minimal fondant decorations can run or a slice.

A high-end multi-tiered gourmet cake with flavored fillings, fondant icing and elaborate fondant, gum paste and sugar decorations can run or more per slice. FYI I have read that Sylvia Weinstock charges about to per slice, so that's close to the high end.

  3. QUESTION:
Getting ready to order a wedding cake and found that our local ALBERTSONS do wedding cakes at resonable prices
Has anyone actually "experienced" a Albertsons wedding cake? Good? Bad? Are they fresh baked and do they really stand up to their claims?

    • ANSWER:
Many times people tend to overlook their neighborhood stores where they have shopped for years and is often the best value. Get samples and see pictures. Have them give you a call when they have cakes ready to go. We went with a local produce/farm store for our flowers. They were GORGEOUS! Only spent 0 and that included everything!

  4. QUESTION:
Wedding cakes in Melbourne Australia after a relatively cheap 2-3 tiered wedding cake recommend good price.?
Preferably 2-3 tiers with icing fruit cake or chocolate mud cake after reasonable (cheap) prices. Cheap wedding toppers of bride and groom. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
My sister actually asked a woman who baked cakes for a reception place to make her cake privately. The woman was happy to do it this way as she didn't have to go through the company and give them a portion of what the cake cost. She had a 4 tired cake (chocolate mud with white icing, flowers and ribbon) for 0. But I think she is retired now. Perhaps you could try venues in your area to ask the same thing.

Otherwise, another friend got her cake from Debbie's cakes in Dandenong: http://www.debbiescakes.com.au/ she chose them because they were quite reasonably priced and could design it how she liked. She had her reception in the eastern suburbs- I'm not sure where in Melb your wedding is but you could ask where they cater to.

  5. QUESTION:
    Wedding cake Prices?
Hello, we are planning on buying a 3 tier wedding cake that can feed at least 50-75 people. Does anyone know how much that will cost? We are locally in Yorba Linda Califorina (that's in Orange County) Our wedding is next year, but we want to plan our budget now!

    • ANSWER:
The first rule of wedding cakes is that you're charged by the slice. I always go about 10% over the amount of people they say they'll have, because of extra guests, and to make the cake a little bit bigger.

The more ornate the decorations, the more expensive the cake. That's usually how it goes. Also, the more interesting the filling, the more expensive. Such as Bavarian cream, fresh fruit, chocolate fillings, etc. Low end bakeries here in NM that use the icky sweet "buttercream" start at about 2 dollars a slice, so that would take you to about 100-150 for the cake, but that is with minimum decoration. Cakes can go up to about 25 dollars a slice if they have top of the line ingredients and ornate decorations.

I made a cake for about 75 guests, with Italian Buttercream frosting, chocolate cake, kahlua, and a mocha Italian Buttercream frosting filling. It was covered in 4 different kinds of sugar snowflakes. I only charged 250 dollars, and that came nowhere near covering materials and labor, but it was for a family friend and we were working together at the time. If it were anyone else I would have charged at least 350. You should have a good idea of what you want the cake to look like before you walk in to a bakery, and some kind of idea of the flavors you want to go with. But remember to be flexible.

I wish you luck, sometimes the cake can be the easiest decision, and sometimes it can be the hardest.

  6. QUESTION:
Wedding cake price for about 250 servings?
we are planning to have about 250 guest. What is reasonable price for a wedding cake ?

    • ANSWER:
Wedding cakes are priced on average to per slice depending on the filling. That should run you from 0 to ,500. In order to save money, some brides get sheet cakes and serve that at their wedding.

  7. QUESTION:
    Wedding Cakes price question?
Why the freak r day so expensive!

    • ANSWER:
Because there is alot of work that goes into them and people don't want to work for free.

  8. QUESTION:
Would making wedding cakes be a good way to make extra money?
I want to find someway to make extra money on the side every month. And I remembered when I was searching for my wedding cake I wanted a good price. And a nice one. They can arrange from 150 - 500. So any opinions would someone buy there cake from someone who was an amature but had good photos to prove nice cakes.

    • ANSWER:
I think someone will buy from you if you manage to show nice pictures assuming the one who needs your service is staying nearby you, as cake can't be preserved well with long distance delivery.

I have ever visited a website selling cup cakes coincidently. The images shown in that website are so attractive and made me wanted to buy it impulsively, but unfortunately there is a delivery limitation within certain area. So I was unable to buy it eventhough I was attracted to the tempting appearance of the cup cakes. If you can create nice photos, I believe there will be people interested to buy. Of course, firstly you have to promote your website among your network of friends and local contacts. So that people will know about your website and visit it.

But ultimately, your cake should come with nice taste too. As the internet is powerful to spread good news, as well as the 'bad' news. If your cake is delicious, the internet can provide you free promotions. On the contrary, if your cake doesn't taste good, the internet can also accelerate the process of bad words spreading among the customers.

These are purely my personal opinions. All the best to you!

  9. QUESTION:
What is the average price for wedding cakes?

    • ANSWER:
Wedding cakes come in all shapes, sizes and price ranges. Cost is calculated per slice depending on ingredients and labor involved in creating your design. Average prices fall between .50 and .00 a slice, but an elaborate creation can run three to four times higher!

That means a five-tier cake that feeds 200 guests will cost at least 0 and could run up to 00 for a "couture" creation like those modeled in the bridal magazines. You are primarily paying for the designer's time, but the ingredients you choose can also influence the price. Check out Ways to Save for ideas on taming this budget buster.

Be prepared to leave a substantial (and usually non-refundable!) deposit to reserve your date. Many bakeries are booked up to two years in advance. Fortunately, you won't have to make your design selections this early. You are simply reserving the date. Final payment is usually expected two weeks or more prior to the wedding.

To keep cake costs down, order a smaller version of your dream wedding cake and also have several sheet cakes in the same flavor.

  10. QUESTION:
Why are wedding cakes so expensive?
I am currently planning my wedding, while shopping for a wedding cake I have been quoted up too .00 a slice making my cake cost more than 0 and up to 00.00 after all the fees they charge. I can make a cake but I can't decorate it, and making a cake does not cost near these prices. Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
This simple answer is because they can. As another poster mentioned there is the expectation by brides that everything in a wedding will be expensive so why should the cake be any different ? Here's why
I'm not a professional baker or a cake decorator but I did take 4 semesters of baking at a reputable culinary school. One of those semesters focused on wedding cakes.
Here's what I know; If I had God - given pastry chef skills I would be able to efficiently make wedding cakes ever day of the year. The fact that somebody has not developed enough skill to make them in a timely manner is no reason for you to pay for their deficiency of either talent or technique.
The fact of the matter is that most people who do wedding cakes do it as a quasi - occupation and never do actually develop pro speed. So they put a lot of actual hours into it and you get to pay for their inefficiency .How nice

  11. QUESTION:
    Wedding Cake prices?
How much should we expect to spend on a wedding cake with the following descriptions? (And yes, I know that this is a question for a bakery -- we aren't at that stage of planning yet, so I'm just trying to get an idea of what to expect).

    *Three tiers; 150 guests/slices.
*In each tier, four layers of white cake -- middle filling is marzipan and other two are raspberry preserves.
*Buttercream frosting. Sides rolled in toasted chopped almonds.

Anyone know how much I can expect to spend? Does the description above sound more or less expensive than another cake for the same number of people? Is there a "least expensive type" of cake?Know of any ways to cut costs?

    • ANSWER:
Ok. I make special occasion cakes (only for friends) on the side of getting my BA in Psychology. Might as well use the degree in culinary arts for something right? But I am a home baker, and don't have access to things a huge bakery has, like 30 quart mixers and stuff, so my stuff would be more expensive than something from a bakery...

Anyway. My starting price (depending on how good of a friend you are) is 2.00+ a slice.
I tack on more money for whatever else fancy that you want. For example I made a cake that was kinda soaked(hard to explain) with Kahlua liqueur and added only the cost of the bottle of alcohol.

      For instance:
4 layers of cake per tier is going to be twice as many as the normal 2- add $.25 per slice
1 layer of marzipan (which is really expensive to make, and a pain to work with)-add $.50 cents per slice
2 layers of raspberry (seeded or seedless?)- add $.25 per slice
Buttercream (European-Italian, Swiss or French, or American) I'm guessing American (for the others I'd start adding $$$ but European buttercreams taste much, much better than American-not all sickly sweet and have a nicer texture-honestly I'd take at hit to the bottom line for the sake of the flavor)-no addition
Toasted Almonds (relatively cheap compared to other wedding cake decorations) Honestly this part should really save you money-this is the most expensive (time consuming) part of the cake- $.50 per slice

Beach Wedlock and Vegas Wedlock Launch Re-Branded Web Sites

Las Vegas, Nevada (PRWEB) August 08, 2011

Wedlock Invitations has several destination invitation sites and after 5 years of serving happy brides, Wedlock has introduced their newly re-branded Web sites.

The new destination wedding invitation sites each have unique features specified to its destination theme. Beach Wedlock has the most beach invitations in the world and now their fresh Web site, http://www.beachwedlockinvitations.com, shows bright colors and a bride and groom swimming in their wedding attire. The new beach wedding invitations site has only been live for a week but has already generated a lot of buzz among those having a...

      Total per slice:.50 per slice
      Times 150 guests
      Equals: 5.00

Now if I were making this for someone I didn't know-and as a business venture-because this cake is barely over the cost of ingredients, I would charge anywhere from .00 to .00 a slice, depending on other specifics. So that price goes all the way up to 0/50.

Keep in mind that even a basic wedding cake takes about 15-20 man hours to make, unless they really don't put time and effort into it. I once did a favor for a friend and she paid me bucks for working 25 hours on a wedding cake (It was a coconut/pecan flavored monstrosity covered in fondant). Talk about getting screwed over...

      Here are my suggestions:
Skip the marzipan- it's not really meant as a filling, and it's not going to hold the layers together. Plus it's dry. And expensive.
Switch it to amaretto buttercream. Its just about the same flavor as marzipan, and cheaper.
Don't use American buttercream if you can avoid it. Seems like you're going for a more subtle flavor combination, and Italian or Swiss buttercreams would enhance this instead of cover it up with overwhelming sweetness. But don't take my word for it! Taste and decide!
Use seedless raspberry preserves, no one likes to pick seeds out in the middle of a dinner. And believe it or not, but bakers don't automatically use the seedless. It'll cost a little more, but I think it's worth it.
Have 3 layers of cake instead of 4. Layer it like this:
      Top layer of cake
      Layer of amaretto buttercream
      Thin layer of raspberry preserves
      Middle layer of cake
      Layer of amaretto buttercream
      Thin layer of raspberry preserves
      Bottom layer of cake

Now, when you talk to a baker, you should bring up buttercream choices, ask about Italian buttercream, and how much they would charge extra for it-this lets them know one thing, that you know what you're talking about, and that if THEY don't know what you're talking about-go to a different baker.
Make sure to shop around anyway. You're not asking for something that's crazy complicated, it sounds very basic, and you should get some estimates from people on the price, plus you'd be amazed at how cakes from different bakeries can taste so different.
Another thing to keep in mind is that price will vary depending on where you live. What will cost you a slice in New Mexico (where I am) will cost about a slice in NYC-because of high overhead, and other factors.
These are visits that the groom would probably be interested in, because it involves eating--and all guys love to eat-so take him along unless he's totally disinterested. Plus, bargaining/negotiating/talking about price is always easier if there is a man there on your side. Unfortunate but true.
Also, and this is big, you need to have an official guest count to work from. Usually a baker will go about 10% under whatever number you give them- so they would count yours as being 135 instead of 150. I tend to do 5-10% over because people really like the cakes that I make. :) Anyway, the reason they do this is because of people who are diabetic, people on diets, people who don't like the flavors you pick out, etc.
Remember, taste everything they have to offer before getting stuck on these flavors, you might fall in love with something else!
I love making wedding cakes for people, and I tend to think its one of the most fun of the wedding errands that you have to do. So enjoy yourselves! And good luck!

  12. QUESTION:
Does anyone know about a bakery in the San Jose, CA area with reasonable prices for 3 tiered cakes?
I'm having my 21st Birthday party, and I want a 3 tiered cake, not decorated just iced. Most bakeries put 3 tiered cakes into the wedding cakes category, and I refuse to pay 0+ for a birthday cake.

    • ANSWER:
Your cake will be a custom cake, so you will have to pay for that specialty. Three tiers will always classify as a wedding cake in terms of pricing, but you may want to try the link below.

  13. QUESTION:
Has anyone compared the M&S wedding cakes to the Tesco celebration cakes?
Our wedding is in October. We are wanting very plain cake design so we can decorate it ourselves. M&S wedding cakes cost about twice the price of Tesco, but they look bit nicer I have noticed. do the M&S cakes taste better?

    • ANSWER:
The M&S cakes are wonderful! They really are very, very good and I would highly recommend them. We bought one for a family celebration and it was so good that we used them for my daughter's wedding cakes. people often say that you need a specialist baker for a wedding cake, but I paid an awful lot of money to a baker for my parent's anniversary cake and it was very dry and not sweet enough - a big disappointment. So I would always choose M&S because it's consistently a good quality cake.

where can i find a site where it shows prices?
im looking up wedding cakes with prices. i cant seem to find one.. all im getting is the picture... can you please give me a site to where it has one? thanks!

    • ANSWER:
You can find prices in your area at http://projectwedding.com or by asking the ladies at the local boards at http://talk.theknot.com what they paid for bakers in the area.

Most cake websites do have a price page but it is only for that area. If you are looking a cake site that is from a bakery in CA, their prices won't be what the bakeries in Chicago or Idaho or wherever will charge.

Does anybody know any links where i could find wedding cakes with fountains and their prices? Also wedding decorations with prices?! I would really appreciate it if you can help me!
Sry i forgot to tell you that the theme colors are coral and white!

    • ANSWER:
Do a search under "fountain wedding cakes" then images. Pretty much any cake you see can have a fountain added either below the tiers or in between. The prices will vary greatly due to many factors. Type of icing, type of filling, number of servings, decor. There is no set price for a wedding cake. ANY cake you see can be done in coral and white.

  18. QUESTION:
price of a wedding cake and catering in jamaica?
I'm just trying to calculate the price of a wedding reception in jamaica. What sort of things do i need to cincider and any idea of the prices as well as good wedding cake bakers and a good caterer.

    • ANSWER:
it depends on where you having your wedding reception - if its on any of the tourist areas - no problem they will have everyhing ready for you at a nice price. if not then you can check out
C&J caterers on derrymore road/courtney walsh drive -they are caterers and they also got a great venue and every and anything that they need.
Other than that there is waterfalls up hope road and also the terra nova on waterloo road.
A wedding cake on its own cost anywhere from JA000 up depending on size if u go with a caterer who does cakes also like C&J then that will be best.
      Good Luck.

  19. QUESTION:
How much are wedding cakes in your area?
I know it varies on size and intricate things. But I want something simple, maybe a two or three tier, small, not overwhelming. With 2 or 3 flavors, nothing delicate or too intricate.

Yes I understand it varies on that, along with it being prices by slice or overall maintenance. But a general idea. My mom has yet to call the person we're thinking about hiring.

I'm in the Boise, Idaho area. No more than 160 people coming, which are a good percentage of kids.

    • ANSWER:
First of all, a two tier cake is definitely not going to be enough for 160 people on its own. A three tier probably wont be enough either. I would, at minimum, go with a 4 tier of 8", 10", 12", and 14" and that will only serve 151. This also does not include an anniversary tier on top.

If you go plain buttercream icing with no decoration except borders and maybe Swiss dots and a couple of simple flavors such as vanilla or chocolate cake and buttercream filling it can start out at about .00 a serving. The more elaborate decoration, icing, flavors, details you have the price can go up all the way to .00 or more.

A great way to cut costs would be to do the smaller cake like you want and have sheet cakes of the same flavor to serve the guests.

Just remember, before you hire anyone, do a tasting first to make sure you like the product. I hope this helps! Congratulations!

I am starting up a small cake business. I would like to know how other people have gone about setting prices for their cakes. I plan on doing plain regular sheet and round cakes decorated to specifications. Also I will be doing specialty cakes like gutairs and what not. I first set an hourly rate for myself based on how expirienced i am compared to others....
then I charge them for the amount of each ingredient i used for the cake, fillings and frostings....
any extras, cake boards, dowels, etc

  26. QUESTION:
    Wedding Cake pricing?
I am a cake maker.I have made many wedding cakes as an employee but never directly to a bride through my own business.
I have been asked to do a 4 tier cake that feeds 230 people and a slab to feed 70. I was thinking of quoting .30 per slice so 9 for the cake and then a little less for the slab. Is this reasonable? too cheap or over priced? it is a simple cake and it is for an old friend.
I mean, a friend i knew a while ago but had lost contact with.
    thanks, I am in Sydney

    • ANSWER:
My wedding cake is actually a cheese cake. I have enough cake to feed 175 people. It is a four tiered cake plus two sheet cakes (slab?) My total came to about 530-550. (I can't recall the exact price at the moment), but I get 70 of that back when I return the cake stand.

This means that my cake is approximately 470-490. So, if I take that in the middle (480) I get roughly 2.75 per person. This is a great deal because cheesecake is more expensive than traditional cake most of the time. In the city where I bought my cake, this is considered cheap.

I think you have a pretty good deal there to feed 230 people. It's less than my cheesecake for 50 extra people.

I agree with the other poster saying that you won't have any overhead like a traditional bakery. Just calculate the cost of the ingredients and make sure that your time to money ratio is factored in. If you think that is too much, then it's too much. I think 2.30 a slice is quite reasonable and when I was searching, I had been quoted higher for both traditional cake and cheesecake.

  27. QUESTION:

I've made a couple of wedding cakes for friends and now I've been asked to make one and I want to charge for it but I don't know how to price it. I think one serving is about an inch wide, am I right?

    • ANSWER:
get on line to view bakers cakes.Call or go to a bakery and tell them you are shopping around, take heed of price, and size for their suggested serving. A baker will charge up the ying yang. remember you are not a pro, but don't let yourself be under paid for your hard work either.

  29. QUESTION:
making a wedding cake need testing and pricing advise?
I have been asked to do several wedding cakes for people I know. I don't know how much to charge since I do this for fun and I am semi friends with the couples. If I did it as a gift, should I just ask for the ingredients to be covered? If I do charge, how much, I do a good job but I'm not a seasoned pro!

Also for the testing, I don't want to waste a bunch of cake so should I make small cakes and covert the recipes to half recipes? Any tips would be appreciated!

If you'd like to bake them a cake as a gift, don't charge anything. It would be a gift after all.

If you prefer to be paid for the cake, there's a great website called Cake Central that is a community for bakers. In the forums, you'll find a lot of people wondering what to charge for their creations. Check it out.

  30. QUESTION:
Does Price Chopper make wedding cakes for less than 90 people?
(If you are not from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, or Vermont or have never been to those states then you probably don't know what Price Chopper is. I didn't before I moved to NY lol.)

My wedding is going to be a small, backyard wedding so I want my cake to be a small 3 tier cake, each tier being 4, 6, and 8 inches. I Googled it but I didn't get very good results.
@CMC, I really wanted to get my cake from a bakery, but none of the ones I called would make a cake for less than 90 people. I'd call Price Chopper myself and ask but every time I do, I get put on hold while they page the bakery but no one ever comes to the phone. I understand why though. I used to work for Price Chopper and they are always very busy. I'm hoping someone who has had a small wedding cake from there can give me the answer I want. *fingers crossed*
@Emily, telling me to ask someone else is not answering my question. If you don't have an answer, please don't post a response. (I'm not being rude, but you are violating community guidelines and, frankly, answers like yours are annoying.)

  31. QUESTION:
Is this a good price for my wedding cake?
My cake is 3 tiers, buttercream, with real flowers and some sugar birds. Tiers are 12" 10" and 8". Caterer is charging 0 for the cake. This seems like a really good price to me, especially seeing some of his work (very detailed, gourmet looking) but having not had a wedding cake previously I don't know what a good price is. This price includes set up at reception. Grooms cake is . Opinions?

    • ANSWER:
Good price for sure! Store bakeries charge that much for wedding cakes. :)

  32. QUESTION:
Pricing & Suggestions for Mini Wedding Cakes?
I am having a hard time figuring out how much to charge for Mini Wedding Cakes...my customer wants each guest to have an individual square cake with a basic flower on top. Any suggestions on pricing? And also, what would work best to put them in? Square Cupcake liners are almost impossible to find! Any Suggestions?????
Well although the answers were interesting...not quite what I was looking for.
I already have the baking pans & the design all picked out. My question is...I am having a hard time figuring out what to put these square Mini Cakes in. Has anyone ever used a Cupcake Liner for a Square 2.5x2.5 in Mini Cake?
Also, Has anyone ever made these before & if so what would you charge if you were doing them? It is about 108 that I am making.

    • ANSWER:
I just did cupcakes for a wedding. I charged 0 for 120 cupcakes. I WAY UNDERCHARGED. It is much more work to make an individual cake for each guest. As far as containers, you could look for mini cake boxes online, or use some sort of doilie under each cake. Remember to add this cost to your price.

  38. QUESTION:
I would like some feedback please on this idea. Making "Just" Wedding Cakes from home?
I have to find out about renting a kitchen at a high school or church even.. better, for starters. But.. eventually if this catches on and my reputation gets out there, I would like to have a kitchen designed in my home for buisness. I have no desire to open a shop and take on over head and employees. I am artistic and plan to sketch the cake first and consult with brides in person. I will get a professional web page set up by someone who knows how to make it look professional, but.. I plan to allow people to see what I by then.. have done, but.. no internet ordering on line for something as personal as wedding cakes. I want each one to be individualized. I also do not want to botther with cakes, that are so..... less in price then what Wedding Cakes are. A few Wedding Cakes and your set for the whole month. I want to become an extpert , so that I can afford to charge top dollar with my artistic skills. How does this sound>? I am also going to be working during the day at a bakery.
I don't plan to give up the day job that offers great benefits and steady income. I am also going to be making some pottery and dog cookies, treats to sell and network through the brides and whom have pets. I can go to this large farmers market to advertise and a small one in town too. How does this sound>?

    • ANSWER:
      Here are some problems:

      - Can you provide quality cakes? Can you bake? Do you know the ropes of baking commercially?

      - Church kitchens generally don't carry the appliances needed to make high-end cakes and larger cakes. Also, where will you store them? You can't just make a cake and hope they don't use their freezer. Transporating cakes from kitchen to your home isn't practical.

      - Have you ever done cake decorating before? Get started - take classes. Get some foam and make some mock cakes.

      - When you "do not want to bother with cakes" surely you mean other cakes -- anniversary? You may WANT to start on the smaller order cakes - most brides want to save $$, but they want a bakery they can trust. If a baker can't even make a birthday cake, can they handle a wedding cake?

      - If you want to sound like an expert, be one. Get a job at a local bakery and see how it's run. Artistic skills are great to have, but you need more.

I think you have some great ideas to start, but it's not practical yet. I think you have just too many ideas and not enough skills in OTHER areas than art.

Here are my concerns (as a woman who was once a bride just a few years ago):

      - You can't bake and finish 15 cakes in 1 week with a day job. Couples aren't going to wait until 5:00 to sample cakes and you aren't going to have enough time off from your day job to satisfy the needs to customers.

      - Take on ONE task - not 15. Either bake cakes and cookies (like a real bakery) or focus on the pottery or dog goodies but not EVERYTHING. You're going to run off customers who don't think you can handle it all. They don't want an ADD businesman - be really good at one thing and be an expert at that one thing.

      - Don't plan on networking through brides. That's terrible as a business plan. How does that get anything sold if you depend on someone else? It doesn't.

  39. QUESTION:
does anyone know a person who can make a wedding cake for a good price iin melbourne?
looking for a cake maker for my wedding cake in melbourne would prefer around caroline springs area. would also like it to be for a great price please HELP

    • ANSWER:
I'm sorry but these are the hardest questions to answer! A 'good price' is such a vague term. What is good for someone might not be good for you.
There is so much to consider when choosing a cake. Do you want it to taste awesome or look aw some or both? How many tiers?
Sorry but you are going to have to put in some leg work for this.
My best advice is to first figure out what you want (e.g. 2 tiers, white icing with red flower details, basic fruit cake) and then call a heap of bakeries and get them to fax/email you a basic price list.
Another suggestion for keeping costs down is to only order a small cake (1 tier) that is all pretty and decorated for you to cut and then a large sheet cake to be cut and served out back. That way you are not paying for a massive cake to be decorates. Plus sheet cakes take less time so cost less.
      Good luck.

  40. QUESTION:
Whats a reasonable price for a wedding cake?
I'm getting married at the end of July. My parents are covering the catering, while me and my bf cover the rest of the costs. I'm a student, so I don't plan on spending a lot of $. I also don't know people who can make a cake. So, what would be a reasonable price for a wedding cake? (150 people).

Do you know someone with a membership to Costco or Sam's Club- go there

They both sell cakes similar to this but not wih fondant icing

(first cake on the right)Its not advertised as a wedding cake- but many use it as one. If you're looking for a wedding cake- they'll suggest this one.

they'll sell you 3 cakes- at about 15.00 a piece-and the tier- is like 15.00 itself. Do it this way and your looking at 60 bucks. Theyll make it plain, you can tell them put nothing on it and use your own flowers and decor. Their cakes are delicious. You can get them filled or unfilled.

My friends have paid anywhere from 60- to 500. I wouldn't pay to much for eatable art.

  41. QUESTION:
    How do you set prices?
I am starting up a small cake business. I would like to know how other people have gone about setting prices for their cakes. I plan on doing plain regular sheet and round cakes decorated to specifications. Also I will be doing specialty cakes like gutairs and what not. I also know how to do fondant and will be learning how to use gumpaste for flowers etc. Eventually I'd like to tackle wedding cakes as well. Any insight would be helpful. Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
First and foremost, I would go and look at any other local bakeries and see what their prices are so you know what your competition is asking.
Second, I would ask yourself what you are willing to pay for it--- set up a poll online and ask your friends and community to anonymously answer your questions so you can get an idea of what they would be willing to pay.
Take a look at what your business is costing you- materials, rent, bills, etc--- you need to make sure that once business is going the prices cover all of that and then leave some left over for you.
Finally, ask yourself what you think your efforts are worth. What prices will pull in the customers? What prices will keep them coming back?

  44. QUESTION:
Where can I get a good price on a fantastic wedding cake?
I'm starting way ahead on looking for bakeries/cake shops to make my wedding cake. We aren't planning on getting married until November 11, 2011. I want to make sure that I choose the best shop to make the cake. I actually spent two hours drawing and color a sketch of the cake that I want, so I also want a place that can make very intricate details and make it perfect and look almost exactly like my drawing.

    • ANSWER:
the normal proceedure for finding a bakery for your wedding cake is to take your drawing to various bakeries in your area and show it to them and ask if they can reproduce it. most will be honest and tell you if they cannot because such a business is built on word of mouth.

you should also ask for a tasting of their cake and frosting. most bakeries which do wedding cakes offer samples to the bride and groom to taste, but if they don't offer, ask for it.

you can also attend a wedding show in your area, since you have plenty of time until your wedding. and taste test the wedding cake bakeries there where you can get a few all in the same place. show them your drawing as well.

you only need to place your cake order about 4 to 8 weeks prior to the wedding date, but finding the right bakery can take time so work your plan.

  45. QUESTION:
How hard it it for a complete beginner to make their own wedding cake?
OK looking at the prices £300 for a cake - I dont think so.

How hard would it be to make my own wedding cake? I am not a hot shot in the kitchen or anything like that, but it does seem really expensive just for a nice cake. If I buy the stands, ingredients, icing etc how hard is it really for me to make the cake?

How much in advance could I make a fruit cake & ice it?

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
How hard depends on the person. Have you baked cakes before? This would just be larger cakes. They have 3 tiered cake pans that you can use (not sure in the UK but check out eBay for the 3 tiered cake pan, it looks like 3 cakes one on top of the other but it isn't. I would try to to create smaller versions and ask family and friends to taste and rate the decoration or designs. My friend took 3 different sized supermarket cakes and put them on tiered cake places with fresh flowers around them and we didn't know the difference. She had them looking so nice and even had a cute topper (from Angelkind Creations) and a fountain near it. It was beautiful.

  46. QUESTION:
Where can I get a good wedding cake??
I'm getting married and want a gorgeous, over the top, amazing wedding cake. I loved Katie Price and Peter Andre's wedding cake style. Money is not a poblem, it's just the place to get it. Any ideas??

    • ANSWER:
Your best bet is to start by looking in your yellow pages. Not sure where you live, but in a smaller town you may have a problem getting exactly what you want. You may want to call the places in your area where receptions are held and ask them where the majority of the cakes come from, they may have some inside knowledge of who to go to and who to avoid!

  48. QUESTION:
Wedding cake buying and price question.?
Today I went to this bakery that was recommended as one of the best in town. I went to a wedding faire a few weeks ago and saw their booth. Made an appt to go in and talk to them about our cake. Well I assumed that there would be samples of the wedding cakes, icing and fillings. None of that happened. They basicly gave me a price sheet and pictures. The prices were -10 a serving plus tax and a delivery fee. I asked if she had any samples because I felt uncomfortable spending almost 0 for a wedding cake that I would have no idea what it tasted like. She snapped at me and asked why I did not try their sample cakes at the wedding faire. I told her the only sample they had was chocolate and I do not like chocolate. She then told me that everyone else likes chocolate and almost all their cakes are made up of at least one layer of it. I was just kind of annoyed. I felt like she was just expecting me to buy a cake based off pictures and their name. At -10 a slice, I am sorry but I want to know if your cakes are any good. Am I completely wrong for this? I guess I just assumed that they would have some small samples and go over different combonations and ideas, ask your theme and colors and so on. Is this normal or was she just pushy and assuming? What was your experience like and what was the cost of your cake servings?

    • ANSWER:
If somebody actually wants your business, they would be more than willing to accommodate you. I personally recommend a new bakery if you can find one. I'm getting married and got lucky enough to find a baker that had just opened up. Their prices were about half what other bakery's were, and the cakes were just as good looking. I met with the owner and she gave me a lots of samples of cake, fillings, and icing. My cake is more than enough for 150 people, going to be georgous, and I'm only paying 0 plus a delivery fee. I know that this is your decision, but trust me... you will have to be working with this person for a while and they need to want to work with you. And a lot of times the cakes that look prettiest taste the nastiest. Good Luck though!

  49. QUESTION:
    Wedding cake pricing?
If a website says they charge per slice but don't give a price of the cake. What would I consider the price to be? Just per slice? Or that AND the price of the cake?

    • ANSWER:
My advice is to never ever order a wedding cake over the internet. You have no idea what you would actually be getting. Go to a local cake shop or bakery and ask to see their photos of actual cakes they have made. Most have a staff member who specializes in wedding cake orders to fully discuss your order. They will have model cakes so you can see what you will be ordering. They will take care of transporting the cake to the reception and setting it up for you. Total cost will be itemized for your consideration.

We had a beautiful 3 tier cake made to serve 100 people for around 0 including delivery and set-up. What you were quoted for an internet order would cost you at least 00 for 100 people. Heaven only knows what other charges would be tacked on.
