If you love bright and cheery colors, why not design an upbeat color palette for your wedding? It is hard to beat the winning combination of blue and yellow for a palette that is timeless, works well for popular wedding months, and is easy to find. These are some wonderful ideas on how to plan your wedding around blue and yellow.

Naturally, you will want your bridesmaids to be attired in your wedding colors. When using a dual-color palette, such as blue and yellow, you have the option of choosing a bridesmaid dress that is blue, yellow, or both. Typically, blue will be the easiest color for most women to wear, whereas yellow only suits certain skin tones. So if you have a big group of 'maids, blue would be safer than yellow for their dresses. Almost any shade of blue will look soft and pretty when done in a floaty fabric like chiffon or organza.

If you are considering a two tone dress, it is best to use very soft pastels, rather than more vivid hues. A blue and yellow striped sundress would be cute for a nautical wedding, or choose a pale blue organza strapless dress with a stripe of pale yellow organza around the hemline (as opposed to by the face). Classic white pearls make for lovely bridesmaid jewelry when the dress is two colors. Another option is to give your attendants bracelets – one in blue crystals and one in yellow crystals – as their bridesmaid jewelry gifts.

Then it is all about the flowers! Blue flowers are very sought after, but somewhat limited in availability. The good news is that the blossoms which do come in shades of blue are among the most gorgeous. There are blue hydrangeas, hyacinth, and delphiniums. Virtually every flower under the sun comes in yellow, from classic roses to springy mini-daffodils to ruffly sweet peas. And let's not forget yellow tulips, orchids, and even flowering branches. Work with your florist to decide if it would look best to make your centerpieces and bouquets predominantly one color with an accent, or if you prefer the more vibrant look of arrangements which have an equal mix of blue and yellow. A great idea for bridesmaids is to give each a bouquet of a single variety of flower; some girls can carry yellow bouquets and others blue ones.

Your wedding colors should be seen throughout your venue as well. If you have chosen to go with particularly vibrant centerpieces, then it would be best to keep the linens and other decorations very soft so that they do not compete. Pale pastel blues and yellows, perhaps with a bit of cream or white, are lovely when the flowers are very colorful and bright. On the other hand, if you have opted for centerpieces which are primarily made from one of your signature hues, you can get a little bolder with the tablecloths. A yellow and blue French Provencal print on cotton linens would be darling for an outdoor wedding topped with masses of yellow tulips. Solid blue napkins will tie the whole look together.

Certainly, your wedding cake should also feature your color palette. A cream colored buttercream frosting decorated with sugar flowers in blue and yellow would be absolutely gorgeous for any wedding. If your style is a bit more simple, a yellow fondant cake with crisp blue stripes around the base of each tier would be elegant. Top it with a single oversized sugar flower to keep the effect streamlined and chic. It will be the perfect addition to your blue and yellow wedding.

      Hi Leslie,

      I would stay away from all dark colors like plum for bouquets. Dark colors photograph as a hole in the bouquet. So sticking with the other fall colors would be the way to go. You may choose yellow or red. Or yellow and red.

      Many flowers are available all year to choose from. Roses always top my list and come in many color varieties.

      If you want to do an all red bouquet for the maids consider Amaryllis and roses. Peak supplies of Amaryllis are October through May. They are very long lasting. They go together beautifully with roses.

      Lillies are also nice. Your local florist may have a few ideas of her own, too. They will also may be aware of local suppliers that may come into play. And also what she likes according to her artistic talent.

      With it being a spring wedding, the bridesmaids could have tea length dresses in possibly white or cream with a black sash around the waist. A light pink would also be nice with some black piping around the bodice and bottom edge of the dress.

If you pick an 'off color' like ... say, purple, or peach, or something that's hard to match, imagine running out of a key element and trying to match that exact color! eek! With blues and greens, you can be much more creative with your decorations, because these colors are so harmonious, Seriously - go to your window and look outside! Green and blue are eeeeeverywhere ... which brings me to the next important point:

      Dress your guys in dark rich brown, and you'll have a sophisticated color with which to match the girls. Dark brown goes amazingly well with pale blue or pale green, and you can also add punches of pink or purple as well, and it will still look amazing. Dark rich brown is a neutral, from which you could really go anywhere, and it looks less harsh against the skin than black does, while remaining just as formal.

      Not only that, but there's a shade of blue or green that any woman can wear.

For ideas put brown and white wedding into a search engine for images and it will bring up pictures of others weddings or ideas. You could also search for candy theme wedding. If you are going for candy or chocolate as the theme white chocolate is actually a cream color so if you're having a lot of that around bright white might clash. There are many colors you could add mint green like in a mint chocolate. It's your wedding don't let the "wedding rules" get in your way. You can also do a print dress with brown and white.     How to keep church carpet from clashing with wedding colors?
    My fiance and I have this church that we like almost everything about. However, she says that the carpet color doesn't match any of the colors she would want for our wedding. Is there not a way to hide the carpet or de-emphasize it somehow so that the colors wouldn't clash?

      You could use a simple white or off white aisle runner. That's about the only thing I know of... but honestly you won't even notice it with all the people walking around and all of your other decorations!

      WOW! I'm so excited to answer this question. I would suggest you guys have plenty of royal colors, such as deep purple, royal blue, emerald green, ruby red and gold. Depending on your budget, it would be so much fun if the guest wore medieval times attire.. Do you know those masks that goes over your eyes only, I think that the guest should wear them.       Try butter yellow, or the pink family. Maybe peach or clementine. With a bit of lime green, button mums, kermit mums, spider mums or lime cymbidium orchids. To me, just me, dark lavender is too dark, especially if he wears his dress blues and sage green, I cannot see at all. Go to this site

      Look at tangerine, also daisy, daffodil and sunflower---the names do not exactly mean the flower name.
      Look at flamingo, cotton candy,begonia and pretty in pink. I even like a pale blush pink, very feminine with the blue. I know pinks are used a lots, but they are perfect that's why, but, in this case I still like the butter yellow.

      Our wedding colours are black, burgundy and deep purple, so I was having the same problem. My fiance suggested a flower his mother grows in her garden called Chocolate Cosmos.       I really don't see why specific colours should go with specific seasons. Fine you get warm colours and cool colours but I don't think that means that you should only have warm colours in Summer and cool ones in Winter.

      Go with the colours that you like, love and want. Who cares if they're not Winter colours.

      Do it in fall colors of subdued oranges, rusts, burgundy, yellow and olive to hunter greens. Use pumpkins and leaves (silk) and/or a cornucopia for your centerpieces - instead of fruits in the cornucopia, use various kinds of candies (chocolates and other candies flowing out of the cornucopia itself).

    Me and my husband going to my friends wedding and I am wearing an oriental style dress that is in a champagne/gold color. The Chinese are big into silver, jade (a semi-precious stone which is usually a light, translucent green, but does come in other colors) and turquoise (another semi=precious stone which is a vivid opaque blue and usually marbled with white and/or black veins).

      Independance Day is in July, and the colors associated with the holiday are red, white, and blue. I live in New England and the weather is sunny during the summer, and temperature is around the 70's thru the 90's, so I'd wear a short dress, but not too too short.

      Purple and orange are wonderful colors, very contemporary with the purple in particular. You can play with a range of purples, from aubergine to royal, and it won't be dreary at all.

      Then, add in a soft ivory to brighten things up and that big wedding favorite, chocolate brown, because it grounds the other colors and says "fall".

      With these colors you can add a little touch of the far east, like some shiny damask texture or some fringe, or even a modernized mendhi pattern on your cake, and it will be really elegant.

      I would think that burnt orange, reds and yellows would blend well with that decor - but still give it a somewhat summery feeling. Of course, you can always go with a simple white and champagne color - that would look nice as well.
      I would try looking at some pictures of ballrooms with darker decor. Does your ballroom have a website?     Would turquoise and fuchsia be good colors to go with for my wedding in August?

      Yes these colors can work well together if you know how to get them to work. You can add orange to create a nice trio. When people think of fuchsia they get scared but in reality all colors are nice when combined with its complimentary.

    How did you choose your wedding colors?
    I can't seem to narrow my choices. How did you make your decision? And what are/were your wedding colors?

    • ANSWER:
      Our favorite color is blue, and so we decided on "Cornflower"
      and White. It still seemed like something was missing, so we turned to Answers here, and somebody suggested peach. It fit perfectly! Plus, nobody else has ever had a blue/peach wedding around here, so it was truly a refreshing color scheme.

      We just used peach as like an accent though. The BM dresses and tux vests were cornflower, and the bouquets/boutonnieres were peach.
      We had a mixture of a couple blues since we couldn't find EVERYTHING in cornflower(without spending a ton), and peach balloons. Like we had pearlized light/baby blue balloons in a bouquet with peralized peach, with a white balloon saying "Just married."

      We had smaller light blue napkins on top of a darker blue napkin, and our little light blue favor boxes on top of those.. Inside the light blue favorboxes were cookies n cream kisses(wrapped in blue/silver) inside of peach organza pouches..

      1) Choose several of the following: blue delphinium, white larkspur, white lilies, white daisies, white asters, blue iris, white alstromeria, blue Belladonna, white statice

      2) Choose several of the following: Peach gerberas, pastel snapdragons, blue carnations, pastel alstromeria, and some of the white flowers mentioned above

      3) Choose several of the following: Pink, orange and yellow alstromeria, orange and yellow lilies, orange gladioli, orange and pink gerberas, yellow larkspur. (I would leave the blue out of the sunset colors.)

    well i am trying to pic Colors but it is hard to know what they look like if you don't see them with the fabric your using. so do any of you know were i can find fabric swatches and pick the color and fabric type. for free or cheep?

      To get color swatches, I would go to David's Bridal. They sell the swatches for a piece and they make their gowns in many different shades of colors. I based the colors for my wedding on the colors I chose for the bridesmaid dresses to make sure everything matched. Then, I was able to take those swatches to the linen rental location, to my wedding coordinator, etc. It was handy and worth the couple of dollars I spent.

    Is it poor taste to wear the wedding colors as a guest?
    I'm going to a wedding and the colors are lavender and gray. I was thinking about wearing a really pretty lavender dress to the wedding. Not because I'm trying to match their color scheme, but just because it's a nice dress. Is this considered to be in poor taste? Thanks for your help, the wedding's tomorrow!

      yeah, sorry to say it is. It's not as though you don't know the colours and it could be misunderstood as to why you went with that dress. Some people get really touchy about their wedding - and when such a lot of planning goes into it - you can understand. The bride in particular may feel that you're trying to take something away from the day. save your lavender dress for another occassion, I am sure you have something in another colour you can wear. have a good time. ;-)

    Should I incorporate the silver on my wedding invitations into my wedding colors?
    My colors now are brown, yellow, and white. I bought these wedding invitation kits at a mega clearance deal. They have this silver border on it and I don't know what to do to style up the invitation. I'm trying to make it more modern. I'm thinking just a simple ribbon on top punch holed in.

    • ANSWER:
      Silver is a neutral color, so it doesn't have to become a part of your official color scheme.

      Plus, even if you use a color somewhere, it doesn't have to be used elsewhere. If everything flows together nicely, that's all you need to worry about.

      If you want to add a ribbon to the invitations, go ahead. Or apply a little stick-on jewel, or a paper/ribbon "belly band" to hold the invitation and the inserts (RSVP card, and a map or hotel card if you're sending those) together. Just make sure it all fits in the envelope and won't get squished, and plus make sure that it won't require any additional postage.

    Can anyone help me with wedding colors?
    I am planning a Mossy Oak camouflage wedding in June and am having trouble deciding colors to go along with the camouflage. I am thinking orange and brown, or maybe green and brown, or pink and brown. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

      ivory sounds good. I think a light gold and brown would be perfect. Pink is a little too...un-earthy, I guess. Earthy and warm colors like ivory, orange, and brown would work just fine.

    What does everyone think about a red, lavender, and tiny accents of lime green for summer wedding colors?
    I'm getting married next July. I want red because all my bridesmaids looked great in the color! I wanted lavender or lilac because lavender means love, loyalty and luck to the celtic tradition, which is the theme of our wedding. And I thought tiny touches of lime green would be gorgeous with the lilac. Would the three colors work well together?

      I can't picture ever seeing those colours together before in real life, but that doesn't mean it won't look good.

      I've always wanted to paint a baby boy's room in soft turquoise, red and touches of lime/bright green, I think those look great together. So replacing the soft turquoise with lavender works in my head .... but again, I haven't seen those together in front of me.

      I suggest going to paint store and getting paint chips of the each of the colours you have in mind. So you have a reference for shopping. Or, go to a fabric store and get little swatches. That's what I did, and it's nice ot have a constant to go back too. "Lavender" can mean a different shade to different people

    Does the cake have to be your wedding colors?
    My wedding colors are tiffany blue and chocolate brown. My table is brown with the blue runner. Chair covers are brown with the blue sash. With the cake being tiffany blue and brown, will that be too much? Should I keep it more of a white cake with some blue and brown? Any pics would be great!

      You may decide that the cake could be a complimentary color to your tiffany blue and brown. I like your idea of breaking it up a bit...white or cream color, with blue and brown accents.

    In an Army wedding, is it neccesary to match the wedding colors to his uniform?
    The Army is changing their Class A's which are forest green to blue. We decided we want to have maroon and black as our wedding colors, but blue doesn't match the colors we want. Also, I don't know how dark or light the blues are going to be.

      It's your wedding. There are no rules. If you want it to match, go for it, if not, then don't. As long as you two are happy and have fun.

    Wedding colors where bride will be wearing red?
    I am in the beginning stages of planning a wedding, but having trouble picking a color scheme. The only thing I know for sure is that do to my fiance family background we have chosen that I will wear a deep red wedding dress. We are thinking of early spring (April, May) or fall (Oct, Nov) for the wedding. I only what my dress to be red not the whole wedding. Any ideals of what color scheme I can use?

      Well, it is true that the simplest and easy answer is black and white (or just black or white) for the attendants. I had a coloured gown and this is what I did. It does look really nice.

      However, if that doesn't sound like something you'd like, I'd highly recommend that you go to a local fabric store and pick up some colour swatches (paint colour cards from the hardware store will do in a pinch).

      You want to find a shade that complements and suits your dress colour. What is the overall theme and season of the wedding? This may also help determine which colours to use. Do you want a subtle subdued look or a bright bold "look at me" wedding party?

      Again, I highly suggest using fabric swatches alongside the fabric from your dress. Visualizing the colours against it each should help a few to "jump out" at you. If you still can't decide based on simply what looks best, narrow it down based on the look you are going for (or perhaps your season or theme), and go from there.

    Why are wedding colors so important to women?
    How come women get upset about other women having the same colors for wedding party dresses, or having the same accessories? I'm having a really hard time sympathizing with this, but apparently its a big deal. Can you fill me in?

      it's not just wedding colors. I think most woman naturally want things to match...most woman like planning things, organizing things, coordinating things. She wants the curtains to match the couch pillows. Her shoes have to match her hand bag. When a new baby comes about, she may spend hours and hours coordinating the baby's room..that's just how many woman are.

      A wedding is no different. She's getting married... she wants everything to look nice, be pleasing to the eye..ETC...

      ME??? I didn't pick wedding colors. Have no desire for them. We are marrying in a rose garden...so whatever color roses are in bloom, will be "our colors" I guess. I was just on the phone with the restaurant we booked for our reception and the manager asked me what color linens do I want on the tables. I told her it didn't matter.

      Then she said "no I mean, what are your *wedding colors*...we can make the linens match it" I told her that we don't have wedding colors...whatever color linens they have for the table is fine...we just want to get married and then come eat with our family.     I have always coordinated with the wedding colors (or have just worn black) and it recently occurred to me as I'm picking out an outfit for a friend's wedding this week, that wearing the wedding colors might not be be "proper" as a guest.. any thoughts?

      Most people don't pay attention unless it's a formal wedding. Generally, guests wear whatever the want as long as they don't upstage the bride or the bridal party.

      Most men don a plain suit and tie, and the ladies avoid white and usually wear an attractive color that compliments their spouse/date, and some women do try to avoid the color of the bridal party.

    How does this sound for wedding colors/bouquets?
    Our wedding's July 30, 2011. Navy blue bridesmaids dresses, their bouquets are peach and pale pink roses. Maid of honor's dress is navy blue too, her bouquet is the roses in the same colors, but a bit brighter. My bouquet is all one color- bright, dark pink roses. Groomsmen's boutonnieres (sp) are pale peach. The groom's is a dark pink.

      Congrats! It all sounds nice to me. The Birdesmaids match the Groomsmen and you match the Groom with the flower colors. I have seen these flower colors before and they work nicely. I am planning my wedding and have been looking at bouquets on line from BeeBows.net. They had some pink peach bouquets. They also have the matching pew bows.

    My wedding colors are mostly blue and maybe some yellow, closer to a darker blue. Do I have to choose an exact shade and make sure everything is that shade? The invitations I like are a lighter blue than the yarmulkes for everyone, does that matter? I don't know if you are supposed to choose an exact shade and stick with that for everything.

      My invites were a completely different color than my wedding colors, just because I liked the invites. No one is going to bring their invite to the wedding, so it really doesn't matter if it is in your colors.

      As far as the actual wedding decor and such, "dark blue" is specific enough. No one is going to hold their napkin up to the flowers and say "these blues are two shades different from one another"

      Choose two colors, buy your decor in those colors. It doesn't have to be exact like matching paint colors.

      I had an October wedding and my bridesmaids' dresses wore a color by David's Bridal called "cinnamon". Its a reddish-brown and I got SOOOOO many complements on it. I coupled the dresses with flowers that were multiple fall colors. My favorites were the "lipstick" roses which are yellow-ish at the stems and change to dark red at the tips. They were breathtaking.
