Lose The Weight Before Your Big Day

Wedding Flower Arrangements

Flowers are universally loved by everyone. Is there anyone who doesn't like flowers? Men woo their women with a bouquet of lovely flowers and it is indeed a quintessential element of a romantic atmosphere. Flowers have an uncanny knack of transmuting their fragrance to their surroundings and cheering up the entire ambiance. Different colors of flowers signify different emotions and meanings.

Traditionally, white flowers have been the preferred choice for wedding floral arrangements as they match with the bridal ensemble in most weddings and they contain all the colors of the spectrum. Hence, white is said to have all the qualities of all the colors combined. In recent times, however, people have been getting more adventurous and willing to experiment with other colors.

To give you an idea of the color connotations, red flowers symbolize family ties; blue symbolizes serenity and calm, while orange is the color of lust! The color green serves as a balancing color for a floral arrangement, as it is in the center of the gamut of colorful flowers. Your wedding day is one of the most romantic days of your life and beautiful floral arrangements will illuminate and complement the occasion. Flowers are known to symbolize life, growth, and rebirth exemplified by the lifecycle of the flower itself.

Ikebana – The Art of Flower Arrangements

The Japanese consider flower arrangements as an art - 'Ikebana'. Indeed, floral arrangement requires a keen sense of aesthetics, color co-ordination, and good planning. Depending on the style of your wedding as well as the budget for your wedding, you could employ a professional floral designer. These professionals add character to the flowers and create a brilliant masterpiece by combining flowers of different shapes, sizes, and fragrances to add a touch of class and elegance.

If you prefer a hands-on, cost-effective approach and would like to have a personal touch to your wedding, following are few tips to guide you through the process - with panache, style, and elegance.

List and Finalize Your Floral Requirements for the Wedding

The first detail to be confirmed is the selection of flowers that you will need. To have a list ready can help you focus your discussions and stick to your budget. At this point, keep in mind that you will probably require a different set of flowers for each occasion such as the wedding ceremony or the wedding reception.

Floral Bouquet Ideas

We are sure you would love to celebrate your wedding in your own distinctive style. To begin with, start inquiring in and around your locality for good creative florists. Search for information on the Internet and start collecting different ideas and themes for the wedding.

Speak to your local florist as he or she can have good ideas to offer, considering his or her experience and expertise with previous weddings. Give ample time for the florist to plan for your wedding in advance, as the flowers could be seasonal. If that is the case, he or she would require some time to arrange for the particular variety of flowers you require for the wedding. Ideally, initiate discussions with your florist few months in advance. Your florist can offer suggestions, alternatives, and provide you with examples of his or her previous work.

Ask questions. It is your wedding and to make it perfect, you have to share ideas and research before you clinch the deal with the florist. Make it a point to look at the florist's work samples and how he or she has worked on other weddings. This could also help you gauge how receptive and flexible the florist is to your suggestions and ideas.

Get Inspired!

You can draw inspiration from your surroundings such as other weddings you have attended, magazines, floral shops, and high-end luxury hotels with elaborate floral decorations, amongst others. Always keep an eye out for well-coordinated décors and good color combinations so that you can incorporate some of those ideas to your wedding.

Pay Attention to Details

Floral arrangements require considerable time and effort. Being organized is the key.

• Collate all your floral ideas such as photos and illustrations and ensure they are accessible when the need arises.

• Flowers are perishable and need to be preserved in water and a cool environment so that they do not wither before or during the wedding.

• Dedicate a work area for the wedding flowers. You will require a deep sink to soak the flowers, several large tables, trash bags to dispose of the waste, a large garbage can, and a clean space nearby to set the finished bouquets and arrangements.

• Provide ample time for the 'floral' activity. Do not hurry up at the last minute. Instead, plan ahead so that you are happy with the end result. Do not try to do everything by yourself and get hassled. Ask your family or close friends to help, and share your ideas with them. This will accelerate the process.

We wish you a very happy married life that blooms with happiness!

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Costco wedding flower arrangements any good?
I'm thinking about ordering Costco wedding flower arrangements for my wedding. Has anyone had any experience? Good/Bad?

    • ANSWER:
I heard they were good, and I was going to use them but the closet one to me is one hour!

  2. QUESTION:
Is there a website that shows some ideas for wedding flower arrangements I can look at?
I am getting married in august and I would like to make my own arrangements with silk flowers and I need some idea's. It is a long way off but I would like to start looking.

    • ANSWER:
The simplist way is toy do a Search on Google or Yahoo in the images section. Type in wedding bouquets, wedding flowers, wedding centerpieces, etc and you are sure to find ones you like. You'll even find links to the web pages the images came from! Good Luck!

  3. QUESTION:
    Wedding flower arrangements from Costco?
Has anyone had any experience ordering wedding flower arrangements from Costco? I keep hearing that they are good but I have yet to hear from someone who ordered them. Please let me know....

    • ANSWER:
I ordered from Sam's Club and BJs (we don't have a Costco near us). They were amazing. I talked to the florist and told her what I wanted. I was having a tropical wedding so I got glads. She ordered them and I picked them up in the boxes at a great discounted price from what the store would have sold them at. However you have to do your own arranging. I had a really good mix of colors like I asked and very very few were broken. They were fresh though I should have put them out the night before instead of morning of so they would have more time to open.

Luckily I had an evening wedding so I had plenty of time that morning to arrange them in the vases. If you have an earlier wedding, that would only work if you have a venue that you can get into the day before. My place let me take stuff over there Thurs and Fri before my wedding so I wasn't rushed but some places won't let you carry anything over until a couple hours before. I think you'd be better off with a florist if your reception is at a hotel.

But I had a florist for my bouquets and the alter arrangement and I was much happier with the Warehouse flowers than I was with the ones from the florist. They got me the exact colors--even though they couldn't guarantee it. The florist couldn't tell the difference between coral and yellow.

  4. QUESTION:
What is a good alternative to flower arrangements at a wedding?
I am helping a friend plan her wedding. Our budget is basically non-exsistent. We had planned to gather fresh flowers for the table centerpieces. Now we are having a drought and due to an accident on the bridge to our Island, we have had to stop irrigating! There is very little chance that we will be able to find flowers. Any creative suggestions will be appreciated! The wedding colors and blue and teal. No special theme - just inexpensive (or free would be even better). Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
I went to a wedding a couple weeks ago and they had nice table centerpieces. They had heart shaped dishes (the bride got them for a dollar a piece at the dollar store) filled with hersheys kisses, hugs, etc. Then, she took some fake wedding rings, (a dollar a bag at the dollar store) and took 2 and tied them together with a piece of pretty white ribbon. She just scatterd them around the heart dishes. It was really really cute. At the main table, they had pretty much the same thing, except the main centerpiece was a picture of the couple in a really nice frame. Good luck!

  5. QUESTION:

  6. QUESTION:
how many flower arrangements are in a wedding?
Me and my fiance r starting to look for a florist and want to know of how many arrangements we need

    • ANSWER:
That is entirely up to you. First you need to get an idea of how you want to decorate the place of your reception and go from there--will you have a head table, do you want something on each table, etc. If this is for the wedding that is again up to you, I personally like the arch, the kneeling bench with two gigantic flower arrangements on either side and palms behind the arch. Depends on size of church, I also like something small with a candle in each window. Of course, do you want all bridesmaids to have same bouquet or single stemmed flower and the maid/matron of honor to have something different, your bouquet and the no. of boutinerres you will need. Also, corsages for Mother of Bride and Groom, and Grandmothers and any other special person you might want to single out, Also bouts for Fathers and Grandfathers. For corsages of Mothers and Grandmothers, I prefer a corsage (wrist for Mothers and pin on for Grandmothers, not too big) prefer colors of flowers to co-ordinate with their outfits, does not have to match, but something compatible rather than the colors you use in the wedding. I cannot imagine an orange or red or purple corsage on a pale pink, blue or peach colored dress. Good luck.

  7. QUESTION:
How do I preserve a pumpkin that will be used in a wedding as part of the flower arrangements?
Its an idea I had seen in a magazine but just don't know how to preserve them. I figured you wouldn't want to buy them a month or two before. So the ideal idea would be to buy them a week before, but if I can't and need to buy them as soon as possible, whats the best way to preserve them, if possible?

    • ANSWER:
A uncut pumpkin will last a month or so. A cut pumpkin will last just a few days and will stay better if refrigerated.

  8. QUESTION:
I wish to buy wholesale artificial flowers for flower arrangements for functions like wedding receptions.?
I was wondering if they would be more reasonably priced in Dubai or in Thailand? Or is there any other country where I can get good quality artificial flowers at reasonable prices? Basically, which is the best place to buy good quality artificial flowers at reasonable prices? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
I agree with the first poster, but many people like silk arrangements for their wedding so that they can be kept as keepsakes. www.handitop.com is the website for a supplier based in Thailand. The other sites will ship. Hope this helps...

  9. QUESTION:
What kind of flower arrangements do I need for my wedding?
I'm getting married in May and have an appointment with my florist next week. She wants me to have an idea of what I want for arrangements and such, but I'm not quite sure what I need, other than the obvious boquets and boutineers. How many arrangements are typical? I'm just not sure where to start because I've never been one to pay attention to those type of things!

    • ANSWER:
Everyone is giving you good advice, you need to know who gets flowers, as well as start thinking of where you want flowers (don't forget your cake). As equally important though is to know what kind of flowers you DO NOT want. Even if you don't have anything definite in mind of what you do want. It's all a matter of taste - I told my florist if I say a daisy or carnation she was doing them all over again! - but that's just me, you may think differently and that's alright. Go to Google Images and search for wedding flowers and you'll have tons of ideas you can print out to take with you of both things you like and dislike.

      Good Luck!

  10. QUESTION:
purple, pink and white flower ideas for a summer wedding in the UK?
I've recently got engaged so me and my fiance are trying to figure out cost and ideas for our wedding which hopefully will be around june 2011. I really don't know much at all about flowers as i have quite bad allergies but would still love a few flower arrangements at the wedding. Which flowers would work with my colour theme and be cheap at that time of year?

Also does anyone have any ideas for alternative table pieces other than flowers?
    Thanks in advance

    • ANSWER:
It was a long time ago, but I remember attending a reception once where there were floating candles on the tables. The water that the candles were floating on was colored different colors using liquid food coloring. It was really pretty. Also, you could do votive candles surrounded by those small glass stones. The stones come in many different colors. Congratulations, and may you have a lifetime of happiness together.

  11. QUESTION:
Ideas for flower arrangements for a wedding?
I am using hydrangeas. My colors are green, pink and white. I have only 2 bridesmaids. Ideas for arrangements (as far as colors/filler flowers (optional?)/ ect)? Thanks!
I'm more interested in bouquet ideas.

    • ANSWER:
If you're talking centerpieces remember to make sure that they are small enough that they don't distract from the flow of conversation. A neat small idea is to take Styrofoam balls and either cut them in half and lay the flat half and the table and cover the rounded side in flowers or to mount them on a flat board or plate and cover the entire surface with flowers. Depending on your taste wired ribbon can be used for an additional accent.

  12. QUESTION:
Having two low, moundy flower arrangements on head table. Would ceramic vases in my wedding colour look tacky?
Or should I stick to glass? It is at a hall with a huge garden, where the ceremony will take place, and there is an overall garden theme to the wedding. I found the perfect ceramic vases in lavender, but wonder if they will be too casual?

    • ANSWER:
If they're perfect, go for it! Unless they're an unsuitable shape (ie the fish shaped vase I saw at a local market, where you put the flowers in its mouth!), I think a vase is a vase. The colour matches your scheme, it holds water and flowers, I vote ceramic!

  15. QUESTION:
What flowers smell strongly or bad? What should I avoid in flower arrangements?
I am making flower arrangements for my wedding. I want to know which common flowers smell strongly so I can avoid them. For example, daisies tend to have a bad (IMO) smell and gardenias smell good but are strong.

Note: I don't mean exotic flowers like the rotting corpse flower or other things not sold in a flower shop.

    • ANSWER:
Lilies can be a bit cloying if there are multiples in your arrangements. Freesia's have a gentle smell as do tulips. Roses vary, some are overpowering and others are gentle. I suggest you go to a florist and give them all a sniff. It will also depend on the time of year what flowers are available.

  16. QUESTION:
Anyone know where to get inexpensive (but tasteful) flower arrangements in Jhb? Wedding in december....?

  17. QUESTION:
How do I calculate costs for DIY wedding flowers?
I'm planning on creating my own flower arrangements for my wedding but I'm running into issues when I try to calculate costs. I have no idea how many flowers I need for the arrangements. Does anyone have any suggestions for ways I can calculate this ahead of time? Or know of a book or website that will give me some instructions? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
I'm also doing DIY flowers. I've already done up a sample centerpiece. You need to keep in mind the vase you plan on using, the type of flowers you're using, and how many bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages, centerpieces you plan on doing. I would go to Fifty-Flowers (online) and speak with a live representative. I'm using carnations and roses in my centerpieces with 15 roses and 15 carnations in each one. I'll also add in some baby's breath to each. I have 16 tables, but if you use Fifty-Flowers, they have very good prices and the flowers come to you fresher than if you got them from a florist.

      Good Luck!

  22. QUESTION:
How long should I wait to order flowers for my wedding?
floral arrangements, wedding flowers, wedding flower arrangements

    • ANSWER:
It is best to talk to the florist as early at six months before hand, and as late as three months before hand. If you wait til only a little time before the wedding, it is harder for your florist to get them in on time, or even to locate where to get them if they are seasonal flowers. If you want to do silk flowers, which I highly suggest if you're going to have children at your wedding! :) IF you do this, you still need about the same time frame, although if you're going to make the bouquets yourself of the flowers, you can go to dollar stores and flower shops and slowly get the flowers you want and then spend an afternoon putting them together. This way is MUCH cheaper if you're looking to save money too. I made my bouquet, two bridesmaid bouquets, flower girl's bouquet and the toss bouquet for 15 dollars in total, and they were full bouquets. Either way, if you're three months before the wedding and you haven't talked to a florist for real flowers or gone looking around at silk ones, you need to now. Best of wishes to you!

  23. QUESTION:
What kind of flowers are nice for wedding arrangements?
my colors are going to be purple/lavender and ivory.

    • ANSWER:
Any cream color flower, interspesed with lilac, use baby's breath or stephanotis as filler.

Cream roses would be nice but since they are expensive, perhaps letss of them and more lavendar and filler
      or
Cream or purple daisies as main flower
      or
white lilies (the smaller type) as main flower

Daisies and lillies are a lot less expensive and will look beautiful.
      Good luck

    • ANSWER:

  25. QUESTION:
What do you think about the stargazer lilly wedding flowers?
I am planning a wedding in July and at first thought about doing the turquoise and brown wedding, but now I am leaning more toward turquoise, black, and silver.....I'm wondering, however, if the pink stargazer lilly flowers would look okay to incorporate in with flower arrangements??? Any ideas????

    • ANSWER:
Stargazers are lovely, but they tend to have a ... strong scent.

Also, if you plan on having them in your bouquets, make sure you tell your florist to remove the pollen. The pollen is orange and it stains. Easily.

If you really want bright pink flowers (which I think would be beautiful; my girls wore turquoise dresses and carried bright pink bouquets), you might want to consider:

  30. QUESTION:
Big wedding flower situation! Need help!?
So I get home from work last night and me and my FH get to talking about our upcoming wedding. I mention the flowers and he asks if we'll be having roses. I say yes, and he reminds me that FMIL is allergic to roses. This is nothing I haven't heard before so I tell him to tell her to take some allergy medicine before the wedding. FH takes this time to inform me, after my parents have put a 0 non-refundable deposit on a florist and 5 weeks before our wedding, that FMIL is SEVERELY allergic to roses. As in, she'd have to be sent to the hospital if she came within 5 feet of one rose (his words, not mine).
I called my mother today to tell her of this development and we decide we'll have to figure out what flower arrangements can be real and which ones can be fake as we don't want that 0 o go to waste.
Later on, I messaged FSIL (FH's SIL) on Facebook to ask if she and FBIL had real or fake flowers at their wedding. She informs me that they had all real white roses and FMIL even had 2 roses for her corsage. I inform FH of this new info. He calls FMIL and she says she just needs her corsage to be fake if it's a rose and the rest of the flowers can be real.

OK, so what do I do?!? FH tells me FMIL is severely allergic at first, and now all of a sudden she can handle it?? What happens when my bouquet is real and she gets a big whiff? What happens when she's dancing with FH and gets too close to his boutoinere? What about roses in the centerpieces during the reception? What am I supposed to do now?!?
I should add that FMIL's main allergy is to roses. Some other fresh cut flowers have the same effect, according to FH. We just don't know which ones.

I think if your FMIL is telling you that she'll be fine, trust her. Hubby obviously didn't understand his mother's allergy. He's worried about her and rightly so. You should make sure, however, that he doesn't have a real aversion to roses.

Also, check if one type of rose is worse than another. Many roses these days don't have the fragrance that they used to have, and some may be easier for her to handle than others.

While you're thinking of flowers and allergies, however, you might check the perfume you were planning to wear. If it has essence of roses in it, or something else she's allergic to, she could have a problem. You might want to fore-go perfume for that day, just in case. Good plan to ask FSIL.

As for fake flowers, if you don't need them, it's nice to have real ones. Would FMIL perhaps prefer a carnation? Talk to her and to the florist and see what's appropriate. On the one hand, you want her to have the honour along with the flowers (without the illness), but on the other hand, you don't want to seem like you cheaped out on her corsage.

May you have a happy wedding day and wonderful life together with FH.

  31. QUESTION:
Is it worth it to buy the Knot's Wedding Flower book, or does the website pretty much say it all?
I flipped through the book at Barnes & Noble, but it was about more expensive than I wanted to spent. I found it on amazon.com for the price I was willing to pay, but now I am wondering if it is even worth it since the knot's website has a flower section that is the exact same as the flower description section.

I liked the book because it was simple and I am just trying to get some inspiration and it had some examples that I really liked for my wedding. I'm not trying to make my own flower arrangements, just trying to get a better understanding of some flowers that would fit my autumn themed wedding (colorwise) that are fun.

So is it worth the , or should I just stick with the website even though I would have to print anything I like and would want to show a florist? It's free shipping since I already had some books in my cart that I am buying from amazon.

I value the opinions of people who actually have or have seen this book. I also welcome suggestions on other books

    • ANSWER:
If you could find a gently used one (or new) via Amazon, it's not a bad book to have. Sometimes you just like to flip pages through a book as opposed to nagivating through a website. Besides, you could always resell the book back on Amazon for cash or Amazon credit. You can also post on your local craigslist book section to see if someone has a copy to sell for an inexpensive price. Another option is to check the public library-you never know what might be there!

      Best of luck to you!

  34. QUESTION:
Flower arrangement ideas for a pink/white themed wedding
I will be making my own arrangements and desprately need some ideas. Its a pink/ white wedding theme. The table cloths are white w/ pink runners and black chairs w/pink sashes. I have pink and white paper lanterns and a pink cherry blossom cake--kinda going for an SLIGHT asian theme. I want to also add sme color so I dont overdo it with the pink and white but I have NO IDEA what colors would look nice and compliment the scenary.

The vases my FIL bought are just simple textured clear vases. Fat at the bottle and skinny at the top.

Here's the closest pic I could find. Yea, boring.

I am looking to make my own flower arrangements for my wedding and was wondering if anyone knows where I can buy wholesale bulk flowers in ontario canada?

    • ANSWER:

  36. QUESTION:
How do you seal the stems of a flower arrangement so it will not leak on my wedding dress?
My wedding dress is ivory and I am going to be carrying a big bouquet of calla lillies and we dont want the stems to leak on my dress. Does anybody have the answer? THANKS :-)

    • ANSWER:
They don't leak. What you might want to do though for during the reception is to have a large glass vase full of water on the bridal table. You can stick your flowers in there during the reception. That way they stay fresh and decorate the table. Some brides like to save their bouquet or give it to a family member who perhaps couldn't attend. They'll use an inexpensive artificial bouquet for the toss.

  37. QUESTION:
How far from the wedding should i pick the flowers for the arrangements?
I'm making the centerpieces myself from flowers in my mom's garden and wild queen ann's lace that grows around my house in the summer. How long do i have before they start to wilt?

    • ANSWER:
I would say don't cut them until the day of the wedding if you can. Make sure to block out a few hours on your wedding day to cut the flowers and do the arrangements. If you won't have time, then you'll have to do it the day before but even if you put them in water in the fridge I don't know how wildflowers will hold up.

    THE BUFFET MENU IS:
Buffet #4 (Hot & Cold) (min. 50 people)

    Linen, China & Silverware
    Assorted Bread, Rolls and Butter

    • ANSWER:
the second link. the tree branch and the hydrangeas (pictures 1 and 3) go very well together. the second picture in that group does not match them very well, but if you want to add a third grouping to the look, you could use white tulips or cream roses in individual square or round vases and you can pack them but not the fresia...it just doesn't match.

i love the look of the hydrangeas and the tree branches alternating on the tables though.

What education do I need to start a flower shop?
I don't have any professional experience in floral design but I did do all of my flower arrangements and bouquets for my wedding. I would like to start my own flower shop and would like to know of any classes or degrees that I would need to take. I don't have a degree in anything right now.

1)A high school degree or GED is often the only education requirement for floral designers. However, formal training is an asset.

2)Vocational and technical schools offer programs in floral design, usually lasting less than a year.

3)Most floral designers learn their skills on the job.

  45. QUESTION:
Any ideas for a Movie Themed flower arrangement?
I was put in charge of creating 4 movie themed flower arrangements (that can be carried) for a movie themed wedding. I've made arrangements before with silk flowers, but not themed for the movies. Any ideas?

I have little plastic Popcorn Holders, but I didn't know if/how to use it since it would be hard to hold.

    • ANSWER:
      http://www.favorideas.com/wedding-themes/unique-themes/hollywood-movie-theme-weddings/
There are some ideas you might work with here to come up with your own design, or pass some of these ideas on to the bride and groom.
I can't find anything too much about the flowers..either very simple like calla lilies, or roses..not mixed. I did read of one idea for a centrepiece that could be used in the wedding party flowers...you can use or instill long white ostrich feathers into the bouquet(s).

  46. QUESTION:
What would be good filler flowers for wedding centerpieces?
I am using Stargazer Lillies and Gladiolous, and Roses. What would be good filler flowers for the Altar arrangements & table arrangements? The wedding colors ar Azelea & white. Wedding is next week!!! Please Help!

    • ANSWER:
The obvious choice for filler with these flowers would be baby's breath, at least for the table arrangements. For the altar arrangements, baby's breath can get lost unless you use quite a bit, and it's kinda pricey compared to some fillers. You might try monte casino asters (http://dubaiflowers.net/english/aste246a.jpg)
for your altar arrangements, or depending on their scale, you might even go as big as spray mums (http://bonnieblueperennials.com/images/MUM_Snowtime.jpg) for filler. It's important to keep the scale of the design in mind when choosing your filler. Baby's breath might be fine for a design viewed up close, but harldy noticeable in a big spray viewed from 50 feet away. Good luck, the other flower choices sound lovely!

  47. QUESTION:
Any ideas for a Movie Themed Flower arrangement ?
I was put in charge of creating 4 movie themed flower arrangements (that can be carried) for a movie themed wedding. I've made arrangements before with silk flowers, but not themed for the movies. Any ideas?

I have little plastic Popcorn Holders, but I didn't know if/how to use it since it would be hard to hold.

    • ANSWER:
      I've seen film strip ribbon.
You could use the cups from the ICEEs, it has that domed top with a hole and would be easier to hold?
If you do use the popcorn holders, you could use small flowers that are off white with a hint of yellow, like it's buttered popcorn?
      Good Luck!

  48. QUESTION:
For wedding ceremony, is it okay if I just ditch the flowers for the church?
I saw a wedding where there wasn't any flower arrangements at the church aisle, just a red carpet, and the church was beautiful itself. It was plain and simple yet elegant. I'm thinking that for my wedding since the church itself is pretty and also I am in a tight budget.

    • ANSWER:
Yes that is nice. I have seen that to. In fact we are not doing flower arrangements the flowers are going to be the bridesmaids and maid of honors bouquets and we are having the unity candles, and memorial candle and that is it. We are not having our wedding in a church though it is going to be at a hotel. Good luck and congrats! And everything will be fine with and or without flowers. One plus to it is you don't have to worry about cleaning up.
