      Etiquette wise, you can tell your guests how formally to dress, but not what to wear. That being said, you can certainly encourage them to follow a theme if they decide to. Wedding hats are similar to a Renaissance theme, in that most guests probably won't own something to wear already. Some guests may enjoy your idea, and decide to buy a nice hat for the day, but some may feel they're spending enough already, or that they won't use the hat again.

      I would word the dress code something like this:

      Black tie optional
      For ladies, wedding hats are encouraged

      Start looking around at yard and estate sales, and hit up thrift stores for some second hand hats. Have them on a table at the entrance to the ceremony for guests to borrow (if they want) who didn't bring one.

      Also, the bride and groom, and all the wedding party should be wearing hats. It's only fair, in my opinion.

      You can pretty much get them at any of the Disney hat stores on the lot. When you get there just ask the nearest cast member where the closest hat shop is and they will tell you exactly where to go.

      Hats are removed indoors. There are exceptions such as "public" places like a lobby but to be safe remove it. Even if outdoors, a hat is always removed at a wedding.

      Always remove a hat in the presence of a lady.

    All right, I have to ask about the hats during the recent royal wedding?
    Is it not considered rude in the UK to draw attention to yourself, as a guest at a wedding, by wearing outlandish hats?       You're probably thinking of "Four Weddings and a Funeral," or perhaps "The Wedding Date."

      That type of clothing is called "morning dress." It is the most formal dress code for daytime, and is thus the counterpart of white tie in the evening. (Black tie, meaning the tuxedo, is not worn before six o'clock or sundown, whichever comes first.)

      There are a number of subtleties to morning dress, but the basic components are: grey or black morning coat, striped trousers, usually grey vest, usually white French cuff shirt, formal necktie, and black oxfords. The trousers are actually what's called a "cashmere stripe" or "hickory stripe," which is slightly different from a pinstripe. (It also has nothing to do with cashmere.)

      Morning dress can be rented from any decent tuxedo rental store. Some will push wing collars and ascot ties, but the turndown collar and necktie is advisable, for reasons too complex to explore here. A silver-checked tie is classic for weddings.       In general, men remove their hats indoors, but, because a woman's hair is involved in the overall look, they don't have to, and usually don't. It's far too much work to remove, recoif, then repin such a thing.

      You are permitted to wear your hat outdoors as long as you do not block the view of other participants. Remember this as you choose your hat. Perhaps you might select something with a mesh or net brim.
      If you are blocking someone's view it would be considerate to remove the hat before being asked.
      When greeting others, you are allowed to keep the hat on and assume the "air kiss" head position in order to not poke them with the brim. If you are poking people, take it off.

      Much of etiquette is simple courtesy.

      Hats are very commonly worn by female guests in UK & Ireland.

      The hat styles from the 80s and the hat/veil combination are not flattering. But the styles worn by guests are generally flattering. Try them on and see what you think.

      I have always liked hats, and yes, some of them do look silly, but a lot of them are beautiful and add a lovely finishing touch to an outfit.

      As for long wedding gowns...I am not really sure what you mean, as I have seen wedding gowns from other countries with insanely long trains as well, not just British.

    The Hat is for my son's wedding - I am Mother of the Groom - and is quite large, so I cannot just wear it onboard!

      You are able to take your wedding hat onboard, you will need to make sure you get on the plane earlier, as the overheads lookers tend to get full on long haul flight, you carry it to the steps of the plane and leave it there, where they will put it in the hold. You can also put it through as a fragile item in the hold, when you are checking your luggage in.

      Sure, if a hat is his signiture, he should wear one, it will look fine. The family all know this, that he wears a hat, it will not be a surprise. If it is a summer day, they make them of mesh, or have some mesh in them. He could go with a fedora, or a cool 1940's style, see some old movies from the era.
      You could even do a baseball hat, in black, or whatever color his suit is.
      I typed men's hats into the browser, picked the first company, and the first page was pictures of all kinds of hats, fedoras, panamas, baseball, casual, and even size x sizes. there was also a listing for shopzilla, who advertises low prices.
      If you have a sense of humor, get him a black baseball cap, and put FOTB on it in silver or gold. Even put some braid on it, alla military style. Nobody will mistake him for anyone but the father of the bride.
      And another good joke to honor him with for the reception is to get similar baseball caps for the bridal party and on a cue, have them turn, put them on, and turn back to the camera.
      Gee, if I were Daddy's little girl, I would even consider doing likewise, attatching my veil to a white baseball cap. Check with Mom first, to make sure she will not have horrors, if she has been all these years trying to get him to take the hat off, she might not think it is funny.

    I attend many wedding events each year and the best ones are very formal with a sense of strict protocol. The ones that defy the traditions and personalize everything often fail to connect with the audience simply because a minority share the same taste and the guests are left uninspired and unfulfilled. Creativity requires an intuitive mind and great awareness. Instead of reinventing the wheel, we could just add some new rims. I like to see guests that make a real effort for the big day and accessorise with the inclusion of an attractive Hat. The word informal should not be associated with a wedding. What do you think about all of this?

      I always make an effort when going to a wedding, I get my hair done, buy a new dress and accessorize appropriately :)

    Can I wear a black top hat to my wedding?
    I think (I may be wrong) that black top hats are traditionally only worn to the races and that grey top hats should be worn at weddings. Is this correct?

      Grey top hats are part of gentlemens "morning dress" - that is, formal wear worn in the morning or early afternoon.

      Black top hats are worn in afternoon evening attire. With it, you should be wearing a tailcoat. You can match your bow tie (never a normal tie) with a matching satin band around the top hat.

    I am not the bride. I will be officiating at the wedding for a friend. The wedding is on the beach in August. I was going to wear a black hat, yet I do not want to roast in a black hat and my husband suggested a white hat. I think that white is only for the bride, right? Any suggestions would be great.       We wear something called a morning suit which is like a business suit but more formal usually with a slightly longer jacket and includes a cravat instead of a tie in a matching colour with the bridesmaids dresses. Top hats are sometimes worn, usually referred to as top hat and tails because of the jacket tail, but is rare these days and is less fashionable.
