      Use Photoshop and Illustrator to draw your images and put the whole thing together in Indesign.
      Illustrator includes some templates but they're pretty basic, doubt you'd really use them much once you got used to the software.

    I'm getting married next Summer in Florida and I'm planning to do my invitations myself. My colors are different shades of Plum, Purple and Pinks. I want the invitations to reflect that.       our wedding invitations were "pop up", too, when the ribbons were untied and opened, the invitations expanded to be 4 times their size. they didn't take too long to make (maybe just 4 or 5 hours total) but i had the origami part down.

      if you buy the stationery that you want them printed on, it often has a template you can use that will work with the specific product. it's not the best design program, but for something that simple, you could use word or pages and simply adjust the document specs to the size you want.

      Whichever fits both her budget and her taste. I would love to buy custom invites if I could afford it, but it's not worth the additional costs when there are so many other areas of my wedding budget that I would rather use that money for (ex. gown, reception decor, flowers, etc). To me, the invitations are important - but not so important that I would spend a ton of money on them. So we are making our own by hand. They will be custom made and still cheaper than buying custom ones. We have designed them in such a way that they are about the same cost as generic ones because we bought materials on sale.

      Designing it yourself is hard, even with a template. You don't want it to look like you typed it up in Microsoft Word. I saw one like that recently and it looked awful!
      My suggestion is to check out Etsy.com!
      You can have someone design it for you and email you a high resolution pdf. From then you can print it on good paper, and it will look really nice! We did this for our wedding programs and they turned out sooooo good!
      The site has many, many sellers on it so you can find someone with a style that you like and a price that fits your budget. It is a VERY cost effective way to have beautiful invitations without shelling out hundreds. And since they're made to order, your colors can be totally customized!

      There are many web sites that offer free wedding inviation templates. Do you have Adobe Photoshop or some other design software? Having something like that will definately aid you in making your invitaitons special, unique and at a fraction of the cost.

      Also check out your local printing stores. Most of them sell specialty printing paper that comes in an assortment of colors, paterns, and textures.

      You can go to a kinko's, or a print shop and buy some Skytone Parchment Paper-8-1/2 x 11 in your choice of color. Matching envelopes in size A4 are also available.

      Take one sheet of plain paper and fold the top down to the bottom. Then fold it left to right. Viola! You now have a 1/4 page "French Fold" that is used for invitations!

      Use this plain sheet of paper to create a "Mock-Up" of what you want on each panel. When you open it up as a flat sheet of paper again, you will see that some of the panels are right side up, and others right side down. This is the way you would design it on your computer page, dividing the proper dimensions down into quarters using guides.

      If you are going to use a color photograph, I would recommend staying with the very light, neutral shades of parchment so that the color of the paper does not interfere with the color of the photo. Actually, you could do this entire design in Photoshop easily. Or you may want to set it up in Illustrator or a page layout program first, and then import it to Photoshop to add the photo.

      Do a search on Google for "beach photo" and see what you come up with. Some of the popular sites like flicker will have tons of pictures that the photographers usually allow you to download. Here are just a few sites for you to search to get started:

      You can find artwork anywhere—just do a google search for what you want. If you really get stuck, email me and I will supply you with some things. Over the past 25 years or so, I have designed many of these for people who wanted what they wanted! It was always fun and special—they loved doing it.

      Only drawback is that you will not have the raised print, which is called Thermography and is also very expensive, because of the photo. I did my daughter's invitations (without a photo) in calligraphy, had it printed on see through vellum, and then we mounted them on beautiful handmade and decorated paper which showed through the vellum. That was a lot of work—something a mother would only do for her daughter.

      You probably used the mailmerge wizard which during the process will pop up a form for you to input all the names. The merge then processes all those into your merge document (the invitation) and will print them all.

      I made my own with an art program. It took a little bit of messing around with, but turned out really well. I took a landmark that everyone would see in my town and did it from there. Make sure you put some of the street names and landmarks around the area.

      In addition to the map, I also had written directions and the addresses of the locations. The people who could not read the map just went to mapquest and printed out the step by steps.

    How much, on average, does it cost to have a printing company print this invitation?
    I am looking at this invitation for my wedding and I'm wondering if the cost will be worth it with that much black ink. Has anyone used this website or a similar one and had a company print them on paper that you purchased?

      The thing about these kinds of invitations is that they rarely look that good. Do YOU think Kinkos does wedding-quality printing? I dont. They are good for office presentations and binders and thats about it.

      They cannot print to the edge of the page, so you have to trim them? That will be headache and I guarantee you will waste a lot of time and money.

      With proper invitation printing company, they are set up to print their designs. Though you can choose fonts and colors because that is just a matter of setting up the type. Also, they are set up to print on the paper they have. You cant just give them your own paper, although you can choose from their selection.

      If you want to DIY, I suggest you do it yourself at home. Kinkos cant do anything better than you can do with a decent home printer. Choose a design that does NOT go to the edge of the paper, or you will have to deal with trimming and slight variations (printing on a slight angle) will be incredibly obvious. Also choose a design that does not have a dark background with white type, that never turns out well.

      If you are not up for this, I suggest you go through a real company that does the printing and all for you. The cost is definitely worth the final product, and the headache you will save yourself.

    I am making my own wedding reception invitations. We are going to the JP and having our wedding reception the next day. It is going to be really informal (having bbq) and only about 25 people are coming and they are all family or close friends.     How do I get Microsoft word back to normal?
    I bought do it yourself wedding invitations and when I downloaded the template online, everything was fine with the invitations, but now every time I open the Word program it's in the wedding template. How do I get it back to normal?

      You need to completely delete the normal.dotm template. This is the blank that's used whenever Word opens.

      First, make sure Word is NOT OPEN.

      It's a hidden file so you need to go to control panel/folders/view and select "show hidden files and folders"

      Then go back to your profile. If you don't know what that means its C:USERS"your names" (whatever it is)

      Then select AppData>Roaming>Microsoft>Templates

      Now you will see "normal.dotm". DELETE IT. When Word opens the next time, it will self-create a brand new one.

      So go to Word and open it. You will be back to a regular template.

    MS Word Docs created on PC platform and burned onto a CD, can they be used by people with both Mac and PC?
    I am wanting to create and sell wedding invitation templates. I plan to create the custom templates and burn them onto CD, then ship the disks out to customers. What I do not know is: if I create these documents in MS Word on my platform (which is PC), do the customers have to have PC, or can they use MAC to open and use the files? Another option I am considering is to post the MS Word documents onto my website and having the customers click on them and download them. Will I encounter any platform problems with this?       As long as they have Office or just Word, it doesn't matter what platform you created it on. If they don't have Office then they can download OpenOffice (available for PC, Mac and Linux) and it will be able to handle ~95% of the stuff created in Office. However, templates may look a little off under OpenOffice when opening an MS Office document.

      You could also consider creating a PDF, that way, the formatting will be the same for all of them and you could just post the PDF file to your website. CutePDF will save files as PDF, http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp for free. But you will have to "print" them. File > Print then select CutePDF, select an output directory and file name and it will output a PDF file.

      A PDF is the best way to ensure it appears the same to everyone. Though you may have to consider purchasing professional PDF software if you intend to do this very often.
