Lose The Weight Before Your Big Day

Wedding Outfits

Follow these tips to help you look like the belle of the ball. Consider the occasion carefully and do your research before you let the credit card fly in all directions. Is it:

Indoor / outdoor?

Sitting / standing up?

Daytime / evening?

Glam / relaxed?

Be yourself. Don't become all frivolous and flowery if, at the best of times, you feel better in a neat suit (i.e. you are a classic). Or don't put yourself in that well co-ordinated suit if you feel more comfortable in trousers and a top (you might well then be a natural). Dressing according to your personality will help you have more fun in the process.

If you have not consulted it yet, Chapter 4 of Colour Me Confident deals with the issues of Style Personalities. Once you know and understand your Style Personality, putting your everyday and aspecial eventa wardrobes together will become second nature.

Ignore fashion. Just because it's aina it doesn't mean that the garment you are considering is going to be right for you. As well as colour and the price you need to check things like scale of the pattern, where the waist is, the length of the dress/skirt and whether these are right - or wrong - for you. The baby-doll look is popular now, but do you want to look pregnant? We always advise that you should wear clothes that are comfortable - a little looser is a lot more flattering than a little too tight.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Wedding outfits?
I have a wedding coming up and i have absolutly no idea what to wear!
I have dark blonde/brown hair, blue eyes and pale skin so i'm not sure what colours would go best. And although i'm only a size 10-12 i often feel very big and self-consious so i would feel really uncomfortable in anything too "revealing" Also I often worry my shoulders are too broad so i'm not sure whether strappy dresses would work either?
Does anyone have any ideas or some good online stores that might do some nice outfits?
    thank you x
Thanks for all your replys you guys!

kachna_ff - sorry to have upset you with my post or anything and yes i realise it isnt a big size at all but i so feel that i need to explain were im coming from. I've suffered for years with body dysmorphia (alot of people dont knowwhat that is - to put it simply its alot like the mindset people with anorexia have except without the dramatic weight loss and concering other issues other than weight) and am constantly insecure about my looks, specifically my face and my weight so although i can imagine most people wont understand be i'm absolutly dreading this event and even having to think about it is hard so i do know what its like to be very depressed because of issues concerning appearance and believe me I really dont think people would kill for my "looks" (or lack of them haha) but sorry, didn't mean it to come across as offensive or anything x

    • ANSWER:
Firstly I wish I was your size!! But I know not everyone feels comfortable in their own skin just because others expect them to. I can't recommend on line stores. What I would suggest is asking a friend who's taste you admire to have a fun girly day out shopping with you. She will get you trying on things you wouldn't necessarily choose yourself... and a good friend will be honest about what suits you and take on board any concerns you have. Monsoon is worth a try.Have a great girly day and good luck xx

  6. QUESTION:
Do you think that princesses Beatrice and Eugenie's royal wedding outfits was offensive and irrespectful?
Actually i do think that outfits was very irrespectful

    • ANSWER:
No.....I just felt so desperately sorry for them....that their parents haven't loved them enough to get them the help they need to teach them to groom themselves nicely, develop social skills, develop poise, dress appropriately and becomingly.

Most parents....ESPECIALLY ones with the kind of money that the Yorks have (despite their whining they are broke...they surely look like they live a whole lot better than most of us do).....do care about their children to the extent that they help them to become presentable enough that they are not made fun of.

If a child has bad teeth...to the dentist....or bad skin...to the dermatologist...weight problem...help with learning how to eat in a healthy way. That's what parents do with children they love. These poor two girls seem to have been raised by two people who are so selfish and immature....that they have not bothered to help the girls.

In both the UK and the USA....most upper class girls are sent to finishing school....they are taught all those skills there..and they are taught them so that they can make public appearances without being made fun of for faux pas.

No one expects the two girls to be rail thin....nor for them to undergo cosmetic surgery to be "beautiful"...but, at the very least....someone should help them with their appearance and social skills. It is a shame that they are the butts of so many public jokes simply because their parents are too selfish and lazy to help them.

  9. QUESTION:
Should we change outfits between an afternoon wedding and dinner reception?
We are attending a "formal" wedding which is at 2:30 in the afternoon. The "formal" dinner and reception begin at 7:00pm. I have read that light floral dresses are appropriate for an afternoon wedding, but they don't seem right for a nice evening reception. Should we plan to change before the evening event or would that be strange? My husband could change ties but my daughter and I would need whole other outfits. What do you think?

    • ANSWER:
I wouldn't change, but it wouldn't be strange of you to do so.

People could think you changed to accomodate the cooler evening air, or that you spilled something on your first dress, or that you got your first dress all sweaty and changed to refresh yourself. If you want an excuse to buy extra dresses, go for it!

  10. QUESTION:
How can we coordinate our outfits for a wedding?
My husband and I are going to an evening wedding in a couple weeks. I have a black and white polka dot dress that is tea length and he's wearing a black suit. Any ideas on how to accessorize us to match/coordinate without looking hokey?

And who doesn't enjoy wearing a French Maids outfit ? I will even pay for the ruffly panties!

    • ANSWER:
First of all, you have to have a girlfriend. Then fall in love. Then buy her a diamond and propose marriage. And finally, fork out thousands for a wedding. Once you have taken all of those steps then you can think about whether or not her friends would even consider your cockamamie idea.

If you want to see women in French Maid outfits so badly, go rent yourself a couple of girls to wait on you all night.

are couples sopposed to coordinate outfits at a wedding?
I have a brown and mauve colored dress with a brown ribbon around the waist. It looks almost purpleish. My boyfriend is wearing kackies. What color shirt and tie should he wear?

    • ANSWER:
Oh, please no. If you are not the bride and groom (or members of the bridal party), there is absolutely no need to color coordinate or match your outfit to your escort's attire.

Just think how silly it would look if all the couples at the wedding dressed matchy-matchy. Let us not even go there, please. That would definitely be too, too much.

    Wedding outfits help!!?
Okay everyone...I have 4 wedding events this summer and I need some serious outfit help! Oh and I'm the Bride so I have to look my best! :) Here are a little bit about the events and the outfits I picked out! Thanks for all your help!!!!

    1) Bridal Shower- At a house, casual, about 50 guests.

    2) Couple's Shower- Luau with adults only. About 60-70 guests. Fun and casual.
    http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=1175361
    3) Rehersal Dinner- Fiesta! Casual and in the same place as the wedding. (A yacht club) Just close family and bridal party. 25 guests.
    http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=1175327
    4) Bestfriend's wedding -7 days after mine in Cabo...casual and on the beach with only 20-30 guests. She is not having any bridesmaids.

    • ANSWER:
      Great choices.
      1. Shower - I would keep the flats and loose the satin purse, it is more of an eveningwear look. I would keep it casual and sweet.

      2. Couple's Shower - Stick with the espadrilles. It is a Luau, outside likely... Save the heels for going out to dinner another time.

      3. Rehearsal Dinner - Definitely wear the heels. Be careful not to go overboad with the jewelry. The dress has alot of interest already!

      4. The second outfit looks a bit dressier for a casual wedding. I would wear the asos heels and the purse with the red handle. Maybe bring along a pair of white flats just in case.

      You have great style!!!

  21. QUESTION:
    Wedding outfits....Groom's sister not a dress-wearer...?
My boyfriend's older sister is very cute and dykey. We aren't 100% close because she is very introverted, but my boyfriend and I really enjoy hanging out with her and her girlfriend and they are really close.

In any case, it is certain that she is going to be in our wedding as his honor attendant. My sister will be my honor attendant. We aren't having any other people in the wedding party -- just our sisters.

So my question is, what should our sisters wear? I've never seen his sister in a dress or anything feminine and flowy like a pantsuit. She is very petite and so I can't imagine her in a tux either. She really looks best in dress-casual slacks and a button-down shirt. I've never seen her in any formalwear. My sister is petite and curvy & looks great in dresses, but really only light summer dresses. But our wedding is formal. And in the autumn. Ideas? They both would look great in semi-formal outfits....but I want to be in a formal dress with a train and everything.
For clarity, I have every intention of letting them dress themselves! And I am not in any way trying to finagle her into a dress -- I'm looking for ideas for clothes that have a boyish fit, but still look formal and won't make her look like she's dressing up in men's clothing.

Again, I'm NOT looking for a flowy "feminine pantsuit." Feminine is exactly what I'm *not* going for. She would really feel uncomfortable.

Of course I'm going to ask her what she'd like, but I want to make sure I have some ideas to present because I really think she'll be overwhelmed....she's just not a "formal" person and she probably won't have thought of anything.

    • ANSWER:
How about cropped trousers? They are cute and also a little more masculine than a pant-suit? Or those "city shorts", they are tailored shorts so quite smart, not like hot pants or anything. That could be teamed with a nice dress shirt to give a semi-formal, slightly masculine look, while your sister could wear a dress if that suits her style better.

How to keep your sims 2 in custom outfits while getting married?
Everytime i try to get my sims married on the sims 2 they always change into those plain maxis outfits. Is there any way to keep them in custom wedding outfits while getting married under the arch?

    • ANSWER:
Set the custom wedding outfits as your Sims' formal outfits rather than their everyday. To do this, simply click on one of your Sim's dressers (if they don't have one, you can buy one from the Buy Catalog - it's available under Misc. Objects) and say 'Plan Outfit.../Formal.' The option should come up to decide your Sim's formal outfit. Select your wedding dress, and then marry off your Sim.

Or, if this doesn't work, then just have your Sims get married anyway, just not the fancy way - simply have your Sim click on his/her fiance and select 'Propose.../Marriage.' This will cause them to get married on the spot (unless for some reason, the fiance rejects marriage - usually a common occurrence with Romance Sims) in whatever clothes they're wearing.

This will still keep the party meter up if you intend for the Sims to have a wedding party, btw.

I am thinking of going to Indonesia to buy cloth to make my traditional Malay wedding outfit. Friends have suggested that I go to Jakarta or Bandung. However I only have time to go to one place. Anyone knows whether I should go to Jakarta or Bandung? Which has nicer cloth? What about costs?

    • ANSWER:
Jakarta! bandung is for outlets stuffs. for traditional malay, you should go jakarta, there are designer class to non designers. if you wanna spend millions of rupiah (1 rm aprox 2350 Rp, 1 us$ is 8900 Rp) you can go to iwan tirta (panglima polim) or house of adjie (adji notonegoro, between jl barito and panglima polim)
or you can go to tanah abang or cipadu for material only.
other batik there is danar hadi (solo style) in melawai raya (near barito) or in jl supomo... near by there is also sida mukti (jogya style) check it out.. you can run it down in 1 day full. anyway, andung is only 1,5 hour from jakarta during weekdays (recomended, no traffic jam in bandung)

Is it alright to change outfits after my son's wedding?
For the church, cocktails, dinner and through the dance with my son I will to wear my formal fitted long gown with high heels and then after I would like to change into a more casuals maxi dress and wear silver sandals with it so I am comfortable for the rest of the night. Would that be OK or out of line?

    • ANSWER:
If your original dress is that uncomfortable, then why not find a better choice? If you're wearing it for the church, cocktails, dinner and dancing ... what is left? You're changing into another outfit for ... what, an hour? I'm not sure I get the point, because if you can wear it that long, why not just suck it up for the last hour or so?

We, as family and guests, are supposed to do nothing that would take the attention from the bride ... are we not?

As for your outfit, you have a gorgeous, curvaceous bod. So of course you must flaunt it!
I suggest a long strapless gown. A-line ish (Don't use Z-line). But not too much! Or else your bottom would look big, trust me :( Just enough for it to fall down naturally from your waist to a somewhat A-line kind of shape. A sweetheart chest line with a tight bodice to hug your figure and a pair of killer heels.

  34. QUESTION:
Groomsmen outfits for a wedding at a marina?
My wedding is on May at a marina. I already picked the bridesmaid dresses, but I am having a hard time picking the groomsmen outfits. I was thinking of a cuban shirt and beige dress pants but I think they might look to casual next to the girls. Any Ideas??
    Here is the dress:

    • ANSWER:
Those dresses are beautiful! I agree with others that have said the dresses are a bit 'dressy' to have the guys in something very casual. What is your groom wearing? If he's wearing a tux, I might recommend gray dress pants for the guys, rather than beige - it'll coordinate with the blue (and silver on the dresses, for that matter), and is a bit more formal thana beige/khaki.

I think you could get away with a breezy cuban shirt (since the ladies are in breezy chiffon themselves) if you want, but make sure that it's a nice fabric, maybe even something with a sheen or texture to it, that will help it not be too casual next to your lovely ladies.

  36. QUESTION:
    suitable wedding outfits?
im 19 , going to the full wedding in less than 2 weeks..neeeed something to wear! duno what to get tho!
oh and is it suitable to wear black tights because im quite tall so any dresses i try on look tooo short!?
iv tried maxi dresses but dnt like them on me!

    • ANSWER:
Check the web to see if there are any stores in the area that cater to the tall woman or tall teens. I know such products exist. Those clothes are cut especially for tall women so everything will be proportionate.

If you have an idea of what the wedding colors are, stay away from those or people may associate you with being a part of the wedding.

Try a David's Bridal because they have sales on party dresses often of what I have seen on TV. They have ways to make things work for women of all heights and sizes.

  37. QUESTION:
What is the traditional japanese emperor and empress wedding outfit?
My fiance and I are having a japanese themed wedding and for the ceremony I want to wear a wedding gown (the typical white gown) but for the reception I want to wear the traditional wedding kimonos.

    • ANSWER:
Yeah good luck with that. Traditional kimonos cost THOUSANDS just to rent.

And by the way, the Emperor and Empress dont usually get that title until later in life-- long after they got married. There is no special "wedding outfit" as you put it.

Please dont do a Japanese theme if you know nothing about the country. Youll make a fool of yourself and confuse your guests.

And also... wearing a proper kimono is very difficult and even modern Japanese have a hard time with it. Youll never survive. And you certainly cant dance wearing one. Have you ever tried wearing the shoes? Yeah, good luck with that.

  38. QUESTION:
Me and my girlfriend are wedding guest so I wanna know if we have to match our outfits?
I got my suit but I got a red tie with white
Shirt and just realized my gf got greenish dress idk should I exchange my tie ?

    • ANSWER:
No...do you match outfits on dates?

matching outfits are for proms, wedding parties, old folks like my Hubby and I who think color co-ordinated senior citizens look cute, and Tweedledum Dum/Tweedledee's.....

I wouldn't even do that to a set of identical twins.

  39. QUESTION:
did you pay for your wedding partys outfits?
i posted a question a minute ago that made me realise that there are a lot of differences between english and amercian wedding traditions... and im intrigued!

i live in the UK and i have paid for ALL of my bridal party's outfits (bridesmaids, ushers, best man, fathers and mothers), because i feel that i asked them to be a part of my day, so i should provide the outfit. saying that i would also be more than willing to pay for my own dress if i was involved in a friends wedding, and i am doing so for my sister in laws wedding next year. i have also paid all expenses for nights out, hair, make up etc etc, so the ONLY outlay that my party have is their time and a gift for the wedding.

but looking through here i noticed that 99% of the y!a users seem to think that it is expected that the party pay for their own outfits. they have the attitude (or so it seems) that it is an honour for the party to be in their wedding, so they must pay for the priviledge, or so the impression is put across to me reading the comments.

so my question is, do you expect/ did you expect your party to pay for their own outfits? and where are you from?

Please note i am not trying to offend anyone with these i am just very intrigued to see the differences, and why something so normal here is the opposite across the pond.

    all smiles :) xx

    thanks
<3 Always, firstly thanks for your nice comment :) every wedding i have been to the bride and groom have paid for the outfits, it just seems normal to me :)
its all about cultural differences and im so intrigued to see the differences, hence the question.

it must be cheaper for a wedding in the UK because we havent gone stupid on our budget, were still under average (about 17k) including all of the outfits, so maybe thats the difference!?

i know its an honour to be in your friends or familys wedding, but at the same time i feel that its more at the request of the couple, you wouldnt go running up to the bride and say 'can i be a bridesmaid pleeeeaaasssseeee' hence why i feel the need to pay, its like me asking you to come on holiday with me, then waiting for the cheque to pay for your half, i just wouldnt, if iv invited you then i pay.

and im not rich or bragging, in fact we struggle most of the time!

    thanks all

    • ANSWER:
I am another Brit and you're right, this is such an interesting cultural difference between us and Americans. It wouldn't have occurred to us not to pay for our bridal party's outfits, and on the three occasions I have been a Bridesmaid the couple or their parents have always paid for what I wore.

I have noticed some other differences:

'Cake & Punch'/ Dry/ dessert receptions. I can't imagine a British wedding without serious food and free flowing booze!

The cake seems to be served for dessert whereas our cakes are usually fruit cakes, always royal iced, and are more symbolic.

'Rehearsal dinners' Not something we do formally and I am glad because it seems to be yet another thing to worry about!

The gifts seem to be given at a 'Bridal shower'. I haven't worked out if people give a gift at the shower and at the wedding. If so, it must get expensive.

'Dollar dances' Not a British tradition and I have never seen one.

Adult only wedding and/or receptions. I have never heard of anyone doing that in England. Weddings are always family occasions and the children are included.

Very short receptions. Sometimes as little as four hours. Mine went on all night and most here are at least seven or eight hours long to include evening Guests and dancing.

      More differences than similarities really!

  43. QUESTION:
Can I ask my personal attendants to wear matching outfits in the color of my wedding?

    • ANSWER:
I think that is what most brides do. It would be better if you could provide the outfits for them or at least make sure they are not too expensive, especially if it is something they would prefer to not to by or wear themselves.

I don't think that's formal enough, unless it is stated that it's a casual wedding. Wear a suit and tie, and when it gets hot you can always take off the blazer and just wear a nice shirt and tie around! ^-^

  49. QUESTION:
    Needing help with wedding outfits?
    Bride:
    1) http://www.sotteroandmidgley.com/dress.aspx?pageSize=8&showAll=1&style=JSM1122
    2) http://www.maggiesottero.com/dress.aspx?style=A538
    3) http://www.maggiesottero.com/dress.aspx?style=A558

I know they are quite similar but just pick your favourite please.

I also need help with bridesmaid dresses. I'm after something in scarlet that isn't too fussy or busy. As you can see from the bride's dresses, I go for quite simple elegance. I think a tea-length dress might be nice. My bouquet will be red roses and theirs will be white roses. Any websites with dress options would be great. I am looking out for dresses on websites so if I find one I like, I'll add it.

Also, my son, my daughter and my best friend's daughter are going to be ring bearer and flower girls. At the time of the wedding, he will be 4 years old and the girls will be 7 months old. We are seriously stuck on what they should wear. Any ideas on that either? Pictures would be appreciated. Thanks again.

    • ANSWER:
I like #2 - it has the most simple elegance, and I like the way the hem flows. How about simple sheath dresses for the bridesmaids? Davidsbridal.com allows you to preview your wedding party outfits in a faux "reception hall" background. For the children, just put them in something comfortable that matches the wedding colors. Little red dresses for the girls with white tights? Nothing worse than having little kids feeling and looking uncomfortable!

  50. QUESTION:
