Wedding planning in the US has become a 5 billion a year industry and continues to grow. It offers a challenging and rewarding career, with earnings upwards of ,000 a year being a possibility. No wonder an increasing number of people are wondering about how to become a wedding planner. Here is a guide to gathering the information you need.
A good place to start might be to consider whether you have the necessary attributes of character to make a successful wedding planner. It is a profession that requires a combination of artistic flair and creativity along with hard headed business acumen. The nitty gritty of book keeping, correspondence etc, has to be dealt with as well as the more imaginative aspects of the job.
You will also need confidence, an outgoing disposition, assertiveness and resilience as well as skills in diplomacy. It is a calling that needs a special combination of talents and abilities to carry off successfully. For a better appreciation of the requirements, there are a few places you can try.
There are many organizations offering training and certification in wedding planning and their websites are well worth a visit. Some of these have some very detailed descriptions of what is covered in their courses. This can be a good source of information on the many and various aspects of wedding planning jobs. If you still feel that this could be a viable career for you, you can investigate further.
The good training establishments offer courses that lead to membership of one of the professional bodies associated with the industry. This is one good reason to consider formal training. Both the colleges and the trade associations keep directories of members. This is a good way to find properly accredited wedding consultants in your area. These would be good people to approach to find out about employment possibilities or even internship or work experience.
You will obviously stand a better chance if you have completed a training program and gained certification. Another thing that could go in your favour is experience of organising charitable events. If you don’t have that already, it might be worth finding out if you can get involved in something locally. If you can’t find a job with a local wedding planning company, self employment is always an option.
If you do go down that route, whether by choice or necessity, a good training course is essential. Apart from the particular skills that are related to planning a wedding, you will learn the general principles that are applicable to setting up any business. They will also provide tools that you will be able to keep and use in your daily activities. These could prove invaluable in your business.
There are no regulatory requirements and you could just buy a business licence at start up. But in common with all industries that have low entry requirements, there is a high attrition rate. Many people enter the profession who shouldn’t have, and they drop out just as easily. Certification and membership of trade associations will not only give you credibility in the marketplace, they will put you on a sound business footing and help you to avoid the pitfalls.
If finding an employed position in wedding consulting is your preference, you will want to know that you are working for someone who is of good standing in the industry. If you want to stay in your wedding planner job for long haul, do your research through the proper channels. You might find out that your potential employer is less qualified than you are.

QUESTION:
Where do i look for wedding planner/event coordinator jobs?
I'm having so much trouble finding them. Even if I'm looking for a "way in the door" what industries do I look under? HELP!! I worked as an event coordinator for 2 years and I worked for 6 months at a bridal magazine so i have some experience.-
ANSWER:
Get some contacts, a church or pastor, a cake designer or 2, a florist or 6, a caterer or 3, and a photographer or 2 in your area. Get familiar with what they have and what they offer. Put an add in the paper and on Craigslist. Be brief but explain your experience. Charge nominal fees at first and once you have experience and are established then you can get fancier with your ads get a business license (which might actually be a good way to start), get discounts with some of the contacts above and be able to offer varied plans and levels of service to suit your clients. Once you are recognizable and show that you have it together and have the connections and know how to do what needs to be done they will come flocking and you will probably be able to book some lavish weddings which will be hard work but lucrative.

QUESTION:
Is being a wedding planner a good job?
I really want to be a wedding planner. But i was just wondering..is it a good job? Like will i be able to make a career out of it? How much do they get paid?-
ANSWER:
Well it would be a fun job if your creative, good with a budget, are capable of taking authority, dealing with financial planning, working with various venues etc. However it may not be financially stable if you plan on working out of your home. And it will take you a while to get your foot in the door. I can't imagine tonnes of brides who will want to let someone plan their wedding who doesn't have a lot of experience. So it will take time to build that clientele. They bring in on AVG 25000. But i mean it depends how much you work, the more weddings you plan the more money you make! O and i`ve heard they usually charge about 10-20% of what the wedding cost.

QUESTION:
If you are a wedding planner what type of people would you hire?
I know someone who is willing to give me a job to help her as a wedding planner but she wants to know what I can offer, but i dont know what I can offer unless i know what jobs she hire other then videoography and chefs. Do you know any other jobs wedding planners hire?-
ANSWER:
She is giving you a great opportunitity for an assistance job for a difficult position. Wedding planners have so much more responsibility than most people could even imagine.Get on line and to the book store. Look at the various checklist and time lines for things to be done to make a wedding spectacular and smooth running. If you don'ta clue, you better get it quick. An assistant in any position needs to know her own job and especially her bosses job even more to be ready to be one step ahead of her boss to meet any question, problem, or scenario. Multi tasking is a must, attention to every detail, and a plan B for more tasks.
Good luck.

QUESTION:
Wedding Planner Job Help?
I want to pursue a job in wedding planning. I'm currently getting my business degree and I've had experience in the hospitality industry. Any suggestions as to what steps I should take in order to achieve this career?-
ANSWER:
A number of wedding planner associations offer programs, courses, and seminars on the required skills of the industry. Many courses are available for home study. Some associations offer their own certification if you complete their specified program, but this is not required to pursue a career as a wedding planner. In order to become a successful wedding planner, you must have a solid business background. College courses in areas such as computer applications, accounting, marketing, and business administration will help prepare you for the demands of running your own business. The wedding industry encompasses many different types of businesses, so it helps to be familiar with them. Taking college courses in areas such as photography, fashion design, catering, floral design, event planning, or hospitality and tourism would certainly be beneficial. Focusing on one area of the industry—such as catering—may allow you to offer specialized services. If you do choose to offer such specialized services, it may be a good idea to enroll in a college program in that field.
All About Wedding Event PlanningIf you are in charge of being the event planning specialist for a wedding reception, wedding rehearsal, or something else that goes along with being involved with the wedding then chances are that you know it is a huge responsibility. Not only are the bride and the groom counting on you to make sure that every aspect of their wedding reception goes smoothly, but all of your event planning skills are being relied upon for the success of the whole event Even though not many people will realize if a specific faux pax is made on your part throughout the...
Recommended Qualifications:
Do some research on the wedding industry, and familiarize yourself with its products, services, and related traditions. Offer to help a relative or friend plan his or her wedding. This will help you understand the requirements of planning a wedding and introduce you to the hectic pace that’s involved. You should be friendly, energetic, outgoing, and have a positive attitude, even when situations become very stressful. Wedding planners also have to be calm under pressure and be able to solve problems quickly. Other important qualities include being very orgnaized and paying close attention to detail. You should have a creative flair and a strong sense of fashion, style, and design. You should also have a good knowledge of different religious and cultural traditions.Work experience in areas related to the wedding industry will give you a good background. For example, you could pursue job opportunities in banquet halls, fashion retail, or catering. It is also possible to gain experience by training with an established wedding planner. Most wedding planners, however, work on their own and may not be able to pay an assistant or dedicate time to training someone.

QUESTION:
How to find a job as a wedding planner/event planner?
I'm really want to take this course to become a event/wedding planner but i'm not sure if i'll find a job after i finish this class. How do you find work in this field if you wanna work with a company? right now i'm going through The Association of Certified Professional Wedding Consultants (ACPWC.) i sent them a email but i'm still waiting on a response. I just asked them if they will help me with job placement or not.-
ANSWER:
ACPWC does not help with job placement. That organization is primarily about education (limited) and networking. It's not a college. And you don't "find a job" as an event/wedding planner. You start a business by yourself, or join another planner's company. It's not like your typical 40 hour a week job with a salary and benefits. You are self-employed, no health insurance, no benefits, no paid time off, and you have to be available to your clients 24/7. How you succeed depends 100% on your drive. You can't work a mere 40 hours a week and succeed as a wedding/event planner.
The most successful planners (who aren't corporate planners, most of which have advanced marketing degrees) make around ,000 a year. Most planners make less than ,000, and are only able to own their own businesses because they have a spouse/partner who makes most of the family income and has health insurance through their job.
I'm not trying to dissuade you, exactly... just trying to get you to realize that if you are in a go-to-class, graduate, get-a-job mindset about event planning, then you're about to waste your money and your time.

QUESTION:
Wedding Planner?
My dream job would to be a wedding planner; however, it will probably never happen. But, i still want to explore the career. How does one become a wedding planner? How much do they make a year?Generally, I just want to know about the career? Is anyone a wedding planner, or know someone that is? Give me experiences.
-
ANSWER:
Definitely go for your dream!Check out the following associations
ABC (Association of Bridal Consultants)
AFWPI (Association for Wedding Professional International)
WBW (Weddings Beautiful Worldwide)
JWI (June Weddings, Inc)These associations are the best there is, and each have certification courses you should study.
The best person to learn from is Doris Nixon. She is the retired President of Weddings Beautiful Worldwide, and is world famous for her expertise. The person who replaced her is no where near as capable or credible, but the course to become a Certified Wedding Specialist was written by Doris Nixon so at least you would be learning the correct way to be a professional wedding planner. I have heard that Mrs. Nixon is in the process of writing another certification course, but I do not have any specific information as yet.
I am a Certifed Wedding Specialist who had the honor and privilege to have been mentored by Doris Nixon herself, and am in constant awe of her knowledge and experiences.
Just one thing...DO NOT go into this for the money. Do it for the love of the events. Although you do get the expensive weddings now and then, the majority of the weddings are within the average budget. You have to do quite a few of those before you can be recognized among the social elite and land a "big one" (unless of coourse you already have friends in high places).
I have been doing this since 1992 and I have had a radio talk show, have had my weddings make the front page of many major Times newspapers, have written several books and have produced very affluent weddings. It never gets old, (even with bridezillas) and I can honestly say that I still feel like a small fish in the sea. I love weddings, quiceaneras, debutante balls and sweet sixteens. My daughters have also developed the same passion and we work the events as a family. However, we have all given up luxuries and freedoms such as vacations, weekends, holidays, etc. We are always at the beck and call of our brides and each week a new bride is the "Queen" with a never ending barrage of issues.
This is also not a business to enter with little cash flow. Advertising is your biggest cash outlay, and without it, you will not get your clients. At a minimum you will need a DBA name, a dedicated business telephone line with yellow page advertising, business cards, state, county & city licenses, a company checkbook, a website, e-mail, membership in your local chamber of commerce, the local better business bureau, the local rotary club, and the local Lions club or Kiwanis club, and if you county requires it, a resale license. You will need to get involved in local bridal expos and these cost big bucks, not only for the registration fees, but for your booth decorations, giveaways, flyers etc.
Many people disagree with me about the memberships, but here are my reasons for believing they are critical. 1) the BBB provides legal assistance and contract review. So you can save thousand of dollars on legal fees just by joining. 2) All the other memberships require you to network, and for the small fees each club charges, the networks you are exposed to provide you with automatic business that you might not otherwise get. So, even if I only get one wedding from all the clubs per year, the return on my investment would be well worth it.
Besides studying the courses listed above, you may want to volunteer at local businesses to intern with them on some of their weddings. I interned at a florist for 6 months, my church for 1 year, and a photographer for 6 months. These were all during my first year in business. Also, I was a partner in a limousine company. I learned valuable insights as to what is expected, what can and can't be done and how to get what the bride wants within her budget.
I hope you find your way to realizing your dream, but be sure you dedicate the time and money necessary to get the company setup properly and adveretised heavily, because halfass doesn't cut it in this business!
Good luck!

QUESTION:
what are some jobs related to a wedding planner?-
ANSWER:
Well any vendors that work in the wedding business, like managers/assistants at wedding venues, bakeries, florists, etc. If you are interested in getting involved in the wedding industry bridal stores employ sales people, seamstresses, buyers, stylists, etc.Wedding/event planners themselves need assistants, people that help set up, etc.
Also venues that specialize in weddings usually have wedding planners that work on-site helping couples plan and make decor/food choices for the wedding packages the sites offer. They also help brides/grooms work out and arrange the other details of their day by referring photographers, cake places, etc.
Venues usually also have decorators (contracted out) that do the tables/head table for the wedding and help couples choose colours/decor if the venue itself doesn't provide a planner.
Good Luck!

ANSWER:
I'm going to agree with the business administration idea but would also do a few lower level courses in world religions (so you understand the diversity), photography (so you know what they do), art (so you learn about color and aesthetics), and music apprec. (so you understand about that aesthetic). While you don't need a college degree to be a wedding planner, a planner with a college degree will likely be more successful. Wedding planning is closely related to conference and event planning - something you may want to consider as well.

ANSWER:
Both jobs require you to be outspoken which you appear to be
Both jobs require to be outgoing which appears you are.
Both jobs requre you to have personal drive which appears you have
Both jobs require you to spend a lot of time moving around
But only one of those jobs will actually allow you true personal time to yourself when the day is done
And the other job will really take your energy through overwhealming trialsand so it is ultimately up to you to decide which arena you wish to do your battles in.
They are 2 absolutely great choices which only you can make. Either way you will be eaarning money.
You need to decide if you want ,000 in one shot ( which could take from 3 weeks to 6 months for just one check) or if you are willing to make ,000 over a period of several checks and perhaps the same amount of months.
Greatest of Luck to you Princess-- Gods speed be with you.

QUESTION:
What jobs are in the wedding field?
i love weddings and the idea of planning a wedding. granted i have never planned my own or anything, but i will be helping my friend get married in the spring. anyway, i want to know what jobs could i get/go to school for in the wedding field? i know there are wedding planners who plan the whole thing. what else is there? does anyone know what the job is called at the bridal salon where you help brides to pick out their dresses? Has anyone had any experience with any jobs in this field, and would u recommend them or not?-
ANSWER:
Catering, cake decorating, selling invitations, photographer, videographer, director (works at the rehearsal and the day of the wedding to get everyone to their places), florist, gown designer... I started off as a wedding cake designer, moved into catering, then to directing to photography (my favorite) and now planning. Been doing it for 22 years and have loved every stressful minute of it. They each have their own stress levels. Photography is where my heart lies... it's what I do when I'm not doing the planning. But there is a lot riding on your ability to produce quality photos. There are some things you can stage, but mostly there are no do overs. I do love the planning too. It is a wonderful to be a part of that special day and to know that you have helped make someone's dream for that day come true.

QUESTION:
wedding planner job!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
do u work in and office or at home
how long do u have to go to college for
how much do you get paid-
ANSWER:
You can work anywhere you like....just be sure if you work at home you have an office or desk dedicated to you...not sharing with others in the house. Also, if you work from home, it must be very nice and presentable...not expensive just nice and inviting for people to feel comfortable in case you have them meet you in your home (I would recommend meeting in a public place or their home until you have been retained as their planner) just for safety. You con't necessarily have to college for this. People nowadays thin kyou have to go to college for everything...it's such a shame...I could hire someone tomorrow with a four year degree but hten spend thousands plus major amounts of time to get them trained to operate my systems and even correctly write an interoffice memo! Or I could just hire someone who has 16 years of experience in this field with no degree, only hands on experience as training and never have to spend a dime on extra training because they can already handle it! I'd even give them the same amount of pay as the dork with the degree! Experience with or without a degree is priceless so if you want to take classes, go for it, potential clients will likely smile on a Business or Art degree. For your experience you can find a planner who has a few years experience and ask to learn from them. It would be great to find someone like this for a summer job in another city...then they don't have to worry about you becoming competition and you don't have to worry they're not telling you everything because of that.
How much you get paid will be according to how much you actually coordinate. Did you know that some locations that host weddings/events on a regular basis also employ planners/coordinators? You could base your pay off of that. Or learn from your trainer that I mentioned earlier. If you're good at planning parties, meetings, get togethers, dinners, socials, you would likely be a good wedding planner.
You might gain experienceand knowledge of requirements by talking to or working for a company/agency as an "Event Planner" or "Event Coordinator".

QUESTION:
How many years of college would it take to be a wedding planner?
Also what exactly does being a wedding planner require?
Is it a well paying job? Would i be pretty wealthy or just decent?-
ANSWER:
You don't need a college degree for that - but it would help. I would do a business degree of some sort. You wont be rich - just decent. You will however be at the mercy of market forces. For example, with the economic downturn the world is experiencing, I would suspect wedding planners would be one of the first hit. Somehow you will need to be able to get through the lean times. Thanks

QUESTION:
I want to become a Wedding Planner. So I was wondering is it better to become Certified or get a Career Diplom?
I want to become a Wedding Planner. So I was wondering is it better to become Certified or get a Career Diploma?
Please Help. Also any ideas about getting in contact with a wedding planner in my are so I can job shadow or be an assistant?-
ANSWER:
There are classes for both but I think from working in the business that I would go "certified". If you could inquire about getting an internship with a local planner, that would be the best experience. I live in the Atlanta area and know several wedding planners that offer internship programs. No diploma or certification is going to be as important as real-life wedding planning experience! Good luck to you!

QUESTION:
Does anyone know how you can get a job as a wedding planner?
I love to plan things and had thought about being a personal assistant, but now, i'm wondering if wedding planning might be a better route.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.-
ANSWER:
I'm a wedding/event consultant...may I suggest, some local colleges offer a course for event consulting, or if you don't have the time or money for school right now, perhaps call some local event planners and ask if they are accepting apprenticeships. My company that I own, we get a lot of calls for our apprentice program. If that's not an option, then try getting hired at a bridal boutique that way you can get your foot in the industry. I started out as a caterer. Started my own catering business then expanded it to full service event planning. Remember, the event industry is always changing so do a lot of research and keep up on the latest trends. There are also associations out there for consultants, but a lot of them require you to have a certain amount of experience to be a member. I hope this helps, any other questions, feel free to email me

ANSWER:
Hi!! I am a wedding planner. I started this when I planned my own wedding and did everything myself. I sat and read and studied for days. I then went out and had to get alot of vendors that would help me with my business. The best advice I can give you is that you might want to take the Bridal Consultant course. This will teach you alot and help you too.

QUESTION:
Wedding planner?
Did you have one? I'm feeling so overwhelmed. Only 100 guests, cost around ,000, and I'm having trouble organizing everything. How much do they cost? We can't really affort too much more. I'd just hate to spend so much money on the wedding, and then do a poor job orchestrating the event. How did you make sure everything happened on time? Like, when to do cake cutting and stuff...I don't have anyone to do this. I don't want to give my mom too much to do on that day. Advice, please? I've done most stuff so far, wedding in May. All vendors hired. I mostly need help on the day and getting flowers/cake/band, etc situated at right place/right time.
afford* not affort

QUESTION:
From office worker to wedding planner - wardrobe crisis!?
I quit my job in a boring corporate role a few months back, and moved to Italy where I've been getting by on teaching and odd jobs. BUT I just found the most incredible job! A new wedding planning company, realy excited but mega wardrobe crisis. Grey trouser suits ain't gonna cut it for stylish italian weddings, and I don't want to go to see clients looking like a frump - they'll think I have no taste and won't ne inspired to work with me!Advice? I can't spend too much.
-
ANSWER:
easiest thing to do with the least amount of money is invest in some great accesories that make statements. such as bold necklaces and rings.
keep your business suits, together they may be oring, but separately they can look tres chic. match your trousers with a brightly colored floral top and gold chain necklace and match a pencil skirt or jeans with your blazer. best thing to do is add color.
but your clients still want sophistication, so thats why you bring in your business separates mixed with more casual pieces to create the perfect look.
GOOD LUCK!

QUESTION:
Is anyone here a wedding planner?
My career development class has assigned us to conduct occupational interviews, so we can learn a little bit about potential career paths and jobs that we may be interested in. Wedding planning is something I've thought about but definitely need more information on. The interview would be short - about ten questions - and can be conducted via e-mail. If you'd be interested, let me know how I could contact you. Thanks!
-
ANSWER:
If you can't find anyone on here, you can probably search online for a wedding planner near your town. Wedding planning is becoming a really big business, so I'm sure there's at least one where you're from. And most of the time, (assuming they're not busy), people enjoy it when they know other people are interested in their line of work. You could go in an talk to them, email, or call and ask them whatever you need to. MOST of them would probably be willing to help you out since it's a fairly short interview. Good luck!

QUESTION:
can anyone tell me how a wedding planners job works?
Im writting a story and one of the characters in my story is a wedding planner. Basically wat i need to know is how much a wedding planner charges and if you have to sign some sort of contract with them. If you can add some additional things i would be grateful! (^-^)-
ANSWER:
There is more than one kind of wedding planner. An independent free lancing kind charges a percentage of the total cost of the wedding....like 15 or 20% of the total. That way if it is a larger wedding, they get paid more,...a smaller one they get paid less. There are also wedding planners that churches have available....may just get a fee....depending on how much they do. They also get commissions from businesses that they
recommend to be used....cakes, wedding clothing, flowers, etc.Hotels and wedding sites also have their own planners available.
A true wedding planner helps plan the whole wedding....and works with the family to make choices, etc. They guide what happens, keep the planning schedule moving....and is there at rehearsal, and the day of the wedding seeing that all gets done and goes smoothly. A good planner is worth the money she is paid. Yes you usually sign a contract for everything that is done for a wedding......and the planner will usually do anything you want her to.
Weddings are expensive nowdays...so if the wedding is a ,000 one....the planner stands to make close to ,000
Not bad! But for that they put in a lot of time!

Would you hire a wedding planner whoes first job was to plan your wedding?-

Although everyone has to start somewhere, be cautious. You want to hire someone who has had a lot of experience assisting other professionals on their weddings. Do you need a college education to become a wedding planner or interior decorator?
Im thinking about doing wedding planning and interior decorating on the side of my normal job. Im very detailed and these jobs would be great for me.
But do i need a college education for them?-

It depends on the state you live in. In mine, you need a license, insurance, bond and certification to be a wedding planner. If you are an interior designer, you need a license, insurance, bond, worker's compensation insurance, E & O insurance, an account with the state board of equalization which may also require a deposit and college degree. QUESTION:
if i were to become a wedding planner, what are some important things i would need to know?
im only 13 but i ALWAYS think about what life will be like when im an adult. you know, what ill name my kids, what my wedding will be like, etc. anyways, i thought being a wedding planner would be a great job. if you are/know a wedding planner, please give me some info on what its like! thanks!-
ANSWER:
To be a wedding planner or to work in the events at all i recommend that you study events after high school. You'll need to have awesome time management skills and be able to work in a highly stressful environement without loosing the plot so to speak. It can be very draining on you leading up to the event. The first event that I did I think I got about 5 hours of sleep or less each night leading up to and on the days of the event (it was a 5 day business conference for politicians!). I don't recommend starting with that! Also try and get some work experience in the industry that you want to work in.
I don't do weddings unless they are for friends, I do festivals and meetings/conferences. And to start I got in with the local council events, studied and got a job where I am now and I love it!
Good luck with it! Hope it helps to get you started!

QUESTION:
How can i start to be a wedding planner?
i currently have a job and am a freshman in college. i wanna major in culinary but i wanna major in business too...should i minor in business (cuz i'd much rather be a chef) or could i major in 2 things?and how does one start to be a wedding planner? and what was your first experience like?
-
ANSWER:
You could double major in culinary and business if you can handle the course load. But realize, that usually extends the amount of time you spend in school. Otherwise, major in one and minor in the other. As for becoming a wedding planner, if your school has it as a major you could take the courses right there. I took my courses through home study. I attended classes online at PCDI (Professional Career Development Institute). And there are other schools like this one where you can attend online. My first experience was actually my own wedding and while it went well, naturally there are things I wish I could change about it. I am currently planning my brother's wedding and I also assisted in planning my best friend's wedding. I've also planned banquets for large groups (400 guests) as well as bridal and baby showers and birthday parties. It's exciting to be able to use the skills I've learned and to practice my hobby. And each time my intent is to make that event better than the last. Good luck!
