   • ANSWER:
     The wedding ring goes on first so it's closer to your heart, then the engagement ring goes on. That's the traditional way, but anything goes these days and if you want to wear them the other way about then it's up to you!

2. QUESTION:
   Wedding rings?
   This is probably a dumb question, but I'm confused about wedding rings. I've always thought that the man picks out the engagement ring and gives it to the girl...but then where does the wedding ring come in? I've heard of couples picking them out together. Can anyone clear this up for me?

   • ANSWER:
     Not a dumb question at all. what we learned is that there are rules, but each person has to make decisions that they are comfortable with regard this all important day.

     I didn't want to spend thousands of dollars on an engagement ring that my wife wasn't 110% thrilled about. I have a friend who is a gemologist, so she got to pick her stone out as well as the setting (separately) then she didn't see it until I proposed.

     We later picked out our bands together.

   Which way are you supposed to wear your wedding rings? Does the wedding band go on the inside or outside of the engagement ring?

   • ANSWER:
     Wedding band first, "closest to your heart," with the engagement ring on top. Or some ladies opt to wear their engagement ring on the ring finger of their right hand and keep only the wedding band on the left hand. I am planning to get my wedding band and engagement ring soldered together so it still looks like two rings, but is actually one big ring that won't swivel around and drive me nuts all day.

     A - The engagement ring is more expensive. Traditionally the man is supposed to spend 3 months salary on one, but that isn't really done as much these days.

     Q - Why are there 2 rings (engagement and wedding) wouldnt that be extremely expensive?
     A - Most engagement rings & wedding bands can be bought in a set to save money & then the rings will also match. There doesn't always have to be an engagement ring, but it's just grown to be a custom. When people mention being engaged everyone always wants to see the engagement ring. The wedding band speaks for itself.

     Q - Does the guy get an engagement ring too, or is the just the girl?
     A - Guys can have an engagement ring too. It's not tradition but it is becoming more popular lately. When I got engaged I bought my fiance a nice ring. Was nothing fancy cause it would just get damaged at work.

     Q - Does the girl have to buy the guys wedding ring?
     Usually the bride does buy the grooms ring. I think traditionally the grooms parents buy the wedding bands but not all traditional customs are followed thru on anymore.

     Q - Does the couple shop for the wedding rings together?
     Most of the time, yes. A lot of couples like to have matching rings therefore they'd shop together. But it can always be kept a surprise too.

     Q - Also, isn't there an engagement/wedding ring that is like 2 pieces, and when the wedding comes you get the 2nd piece?
     Yes, thats a bridal set. Engagement rings come in all shapes & sizes these days so the wedding band is made to fit perfectly with it. My engagement ring is princess cut & the matching wedding band has a square groove in it to fit perfectly. My sisters wedding band is curved to fit in with her wavy styled engagement ring.

5. QUESTION:
   How do I properly exchange wedding rings if bride has a band set?
   My soon to be wife's wedding ring is a 2 piece set: engagement ring and a wedding band. How do I exchange rings during the ceremony? Should she already have the engagement ring on, and I just add the wedding band? Or should both her engagement ring and wedding band be on the ring pillow and I put both on her? If so, one at a time or simultaneously?

   • ANSWER:
     I'm assuming they aren't soldered together. They are still 2 seperate pieces.
     There are a couple options for the engagement ring during the ceremony.
     Now, for the most part, the wedding band goes on the bottom of the finger with the engagement ring ontop (some old tradition of it being closest to your heart) So for the engagement ring:
     1. She can hand it to her MOH to hold during the ceremony and put it back on right after.
     2. She can put it on her right hand and put it back on the proper finger afterwards (this is what I'm doing)
     3. She can leave it on and just switch them around afterwards.
     4. She can put it on the ring pillow and have you put both on her hand. Personally I'm not a fan of this way because you give her the engagement ring when you propose and the wedding band when you marry. One should not be given at the opposite time. Does that wording make sense? lol

6. QUESTION:
   What types of wedding rings should I get to compliment my everlon knot engagement ring?
   My fiance bought me a everlon knot ring to propose with and we have been looking at wedding rings to compliment it. It has ,of course, the everlon knot on it and is white gold. The ring setting itself is pretty thin. If needed I can provide a picture for more help. Please give me any suggestions on ideas. Thanks!

     I would get a plain band, might have to be curved or notched for a better fit.

   What is the difference between engagement and wedding rings?
   Are they actually separate or do the engagement rings become the wedding rings? Also, guys give rings to girls, but does it go the other way too? Or does the guy get both? And do the rings have to match? Or is the guys ring different? Do wedding rings have to be like gold or diamonds?

   • ANSWER:
     An engagement ring (usually a diamond in the US) is given to a woman as a promise to marry. It is like collateral for the marriage. If you break up you have to return the ring. Same as if you propose to your boyfriend and give him an engagement ring (this practice is becoming more popular).

     Sometimes an engagement ring if it is a band of gold with writing on it (sometimes called a posy ring) can be used as both a wedding ring and an engagement ring, especially if the person doesn't like to wear two rings. You can find posy rings on the internet.

     A wedding ring symbolizes the actual marriage itself. That is usually a band of gold, sometimes with diamonds, sometimes not. It solidifies the union itself.

     Rings do not have to match. It is up to the individual couple on what they prefer.

     After the marriage if you divorce, both rings are yours forever because you went through with the marriage.

8. QUESTION:
   What is the difference between wedding rings engagement rings and?
   My sister is going to be engaged next month. She asked me to go with her next week to help her choose the engagement rings. Before going to the jewelry shop I want to know what is the difference between wedding rings and engagement rings. Do people wear the same rings on their marriage ?

   • ANSWER:
     Engagement rings and wedding rings are different both in appearance and symbolism. Generally engagement rings are worn prior to marriage to signify one’s engaged status. The most common engagement rings are diamond solitaires, though engagement rings can be any color or choice of stone depending upon taste.

     Like wedding rings, engagement rings tend to be worn on the left hand ring finger. They are often purchased alone, or they may be sold as part of a set. When the person is married, the wedding ring portion of the set is added and tends to be worn below the engagement ring on the ring finger of the left hand.

     Wedding rings can also be sold separately from engagement rings and may be comparatively simple in design. Simple gold or platinum bands are still quite popular for both men and women. It’s a good idea to choose from engagement rings that will fit with a wedding band, or alternately to purchase a set if the ring has any designs that might make it incompatible with a simple band.

     Some wedding rings, especially in a set can also be quite elaborate. They may include diamonds or other stones that set off engagement rings beautifully. If engagement rings have peculiarities in shape and are not sold in a set, an alternative to purchasing a band that does not match is having one designed to fit with the engagement ring.

     Further, often engagement rings and wedding rings that are designed to go together may be welded in the back to reduce friction of the rings rubbing together. Friction will ultimately wear the rings down, particularly if they are 14 karat gold or higher. Most jewelry stores can perform this simple operation a few days before a marriage takes place so women do not have to be without their engagement rings for long.

     It is generally customary for women to wear engagement rings. There are male engagement rings but these are less common. Generally both new husband and wife will wear wedding rings. Unlike engagement rings, wedding rings are usually not worn until after a marriage has taken place. While a diamond solitaire on the left ring finger may indicate a lady’s engagement, a simple band worn on the left hand ring finger by either a man or a woman signifies that the person is married.

   My girlfriend and I are not religious, but like the idea of having a gold and silver (for the bride) set of wedding rings, like the Catholics.

     You go to the jewelry store and you buy whatever rings you like and can afford.

10. QUESTION:
    How do promise, engagement and wedding rings work?
    Do you buy the promise, engagement and wedding rings separate or is there a package? And what's the cost of an average promise ring?

    • ANSWER:
      A promise ring is usually something given by a teenage boy to his girlfriend to "promise" to her he wants to be with her forever. It's sweet, but doesn't really mean much. It's like being engaged to be engaged. They usually cost 0-300 from what I've seen. They either have a small diamond or no diamond at all - or the girl's birthstone.

      You can buy engagement rings & wedding bands in packages, or you can buy them separately. It's nice to buy them in a package if you want your bride to wear them on the same finger once you guys are married - so that you know they'll fit together. Some women move their engagement ring over to their right hand and in that case they don't need to match or fit together.

    Why are engagement rings more expensive than wedding rings? Where I get a best quality one in cheap price?
    We are looking for good diamond engagement rings. But some of my friends tell us it is more expensive than wedding rings. Why are engagement rings more expensive than wedding rings? Where I get a best quality one in cheap price?

      Generally speaking, the engagement ring has the main stone on it.

      The wedding band has much smaller stones on it therefore costing less.

    I had a dream that my wedding rings broke apart. The band is bonded to the engagement ring, and in the dream it not only came apart, but both rings split and bent. It's really been bothering me.

      Engagement rings usually cost more due to the fact that there is a large stone of some kind (either a gem like an emerald or sapphire or traditional like a diamond) which takes up a chunk of the cost. Wedding rings are usually cheaper due to smaller diamonds or just pure white/yellow gold.

      I'd recommend getting the rings bound together after the ceremony, just in case both the rings won't fit on your finger together, or so that your groom doesn't have to force them on. That's just my opinion, different people do things a different ways.

      I know this sound cheap.....but the Dollar stores have them, and they are very nice....at least the ones at Dollar Tree. They can be decorated too.

    How long does soldering last for wedding rings?
    I had my wedding band and engagement ring soldered together before my May 16 wedding and I think they are already coming apart! I had them soldered at a good jeweler and I take good care of my rings so I am just wondering if this is normal? How long does soldering usually last?

      I would have it looked at. Soldering rings together should not come apart. I have had mine soldered together for 7 years with no problems.

    Lets not discuss the cost. I know that promise rings are generally cheaper but what if we got 2 rings that look similar and both cost k but one is marketed as promise ring and the other a wedding ring? are there small differences in the design im not aware of?

      There are no small differences that you are missing. It is all about the marketing of the rings. And your choice of them is according to what is in your pocket and your bank account. And what your gf/fiancee wants.

      A promise ring is not a traditional thing, it was never a stair step thing unless circumstances forced it. It can be skipped. In favor of one big honkin' engagement diamond[s], LOL. There really isn't any steps in a relationship where it is now time for the promise ring, now it is time for the engagement ring. Unless your gf/fiancee wants it that way. It is just a new way to market rings, and get you to spend more money. In Rivers day, a promise ring was something to be pittied, poor Rivers, her fiance is poor, and can't afford a better ring, and poor things have to wait to get married. Often promise rings were given when the couple was too young to marry.How things do change in one generation.

      Generally, a promise ring is smaller and cheaper. That is because it is often given at a time of life where marriage is just a promise, the couple might still be in school, or just starting their work careers, or in the military and maybe stationed apart. Otherwise, a promise might look like a small diamond solitaire, just one stone, but there are no rules about a promise ring. It could be anything that the gentleman can afford. Doesn't even have to be a diamond. It used to be a tiny diamond inside of a heart shape. And not intended to be worn after the engagement ring was given, unless it was on the other hand. And I hear these days the ladies are buying the gentlemen promise rings.

      A traditional diamond engagement ring has one diamond, but it can have as many as is wanted. A three diamond ring would certainly differentiate it from a single stone promise ring. My Mom's engagement ring was one big stone and a smaller stone on each side of it. She never had a promise ring, her engagement ring was it. Dad did promise to get her a better ring when their circumstances were better and the world was calmer. He did.

      A traditional wedding ring is is called a band, and that is what it is usually shaped like. It can be plain, or have stones in it, one, or a few, or many. It can be shaped to match and to hook onto the engagement ring. This is the one that is saved, and taken to the church/venue for the wedding, the one the minister blesses. The one that is never taken off except for danger, and cleaning. An engagement diamond does not have to be worn.

      Want to really be confused? How about an eternity ring? These were marketed some years back as being a gift for a big anniversary, and were diamonds completely around a band. But, some people have this type of ring for a wedding band. I guess they would get bigger diamonds in a bigger band for their anniversary.

      Most people stick with gold or platinum. Some people opt for palladium as this is the less expensive metal over platinum. For a wedding band, silver is out. Two tone – white gold, rose gold or yellow gold combination can be very nice as well.

      My wife didn't want to get her rings soldered just in case she just wanted to wear her wedding ring in chance of losing or getting the engagement ring lost/stolen. There are places she's not comfortable to wear her engagement ring.

    Which characters wear wedding rings in the Twilight movie?
    I know Carlisle wears his cullen crest on a ring that he uses as a wedding ring and I think it looks like Alice wears a ring on her left hand, but do Jasper, Emmett, or Rosalie wear wedding rings? Are they supposed to be married in the movie?

      It looks like Alice might be wearing one, but it looks like Jasper is not.
      It also looks like Rosalie might, but that Emmett is not.

      I can't tell if they are wedding rings, or just decorative rings, but it does look like there is silver on both of the girls' hands. You can also clearly see that there is no silver on the guys' hands.

      Anyway, I'm sorry I couldn't give you a definite answer, but I bet if you watch the movie and really pay attention, then you might be able to see if they are.

      i do, but i wouldnt have cared if it was any other stone.

      my fiance took me around to all the jewelery stores in our town to pick out a ring. i dont wear jewelery hardly EVER, so he literally had no idea what i would like. i looked at rings of all colors, shapes, sizes. yes, a lot of them did have diamonds but there were also a few that had colorful stones that ended up on "wish lists"

    How do wedding ring/engagement rings work? when to give what?
    Im planning on proposing to my girlfriend as soon as i look for and buy a ring but im kinda confused. Theres bridal sets which go together, and theres engagement rings then weedding rings to givin at the wedding obviously. In the second instance, should the engagement ring be the larger of the two or should the wedding ring itsself be larger? thanks

      Think of it this way. There is the diamond engagement ring which you buy and give to her when you want to propose. Then there is there are the wedding bands which you buy closer to the wedding date and exchange at your actual wedding ceremony. You see some bridal "sets" which consist of the diamond engagement ring and also the wedding band. The reason these are sold this way is because they are made to go together as a set, meaning they match. You can buy a set if you like but only give her the diamond engagement ring when you propose. Hold the band for the wedding day.

      I also suggest you to go a local jeweler in your area rather than one of the chain stores in the mall. A jeweler is much more knowledgeable.

    How far out before a wedding do we need to get our wedding rings?
    My fiancee and I are getting married in July. some magazine she was reading said we need to have the rings with the inscriptions done 5-6 months before the wedding. that seems like a long time to me. I've gone to a couple of jewelry stores and they said the rings won't take that long to inscribe. is there any specific reason that some people recommend doing this so far out? thanks!

      hey, if all you are getting are simple gold bands, you can get those 1 hour before the wedding...OK that is perhaps an exaggeration, but they are stocked everywhere and can be resized to fit you perfectly within minutes... an engraving with your names etc, can also be done within an hour if you go to the right people. It helps if you have access to lots of jewelers (f.ex.the jewelry district in New York City).

      If you are getting a more valuable ring with diamonds I would shop a little earlier. It is more difficult to resize these rings. Good luck, and no need to panic.

    how to make wooden wedding rings?
    i kinda jumped the gun on the last qustion i asked about making wooden wedding rings but there were a lot of great answers but none seemd to work i have been to allmost every store in chicago and no one seems to know what or understand what i am trying to do. i want to learn on how to make wooden rings, tools,machines,or just plane bits. and all the reseach on the internet has gone now were, so to my fellow woodwroks and others please help.

    • ANSWER:
      Pick a wood that will last a while, like Oak. You can get nice pieces of wood from hobby shops or hardware stores and cut them out with hole saws. After that, sand them down until you like the texture and thickness then coat them with linseed oil, polyurethane, or butcher's wax.
      But make sure you're not allergic to those products...especially the oil. You might want to stain them first, too. Try a few, see what works.

      This is a nice idea; mining gold is horrifically bad for the environment. Fields with some gold dust are covered with cyanide treatments to leech out the gold; everything else is laid to waste forever. Hardly the way to commemmorate a marriage.

    Is there a specific meaning for gold or silver wedding rings? Which one do YOU prefer?
    I personally like silver or white gold rings, but for some reason when I think of getting married I always picture gold wedding rings. What do you think?

    • ANSWER:
      I guess yellow gold is more traditional than white gold. But it depends on the style of the ring which looks better. My ring is really blingy and would have looked aweful with yellow gold.       also, make sure that you get signature request upon delivery- otherwise UPS/FedEx could accidentally bring the rings to the wrong address and leave them there. dont assume its signature required upon delivery- the boxes go by weight so they might not automatically make it a sig. req. delivery.

      My fiance and I are also going to be getting white gold bands. Mine is going to be about 300 (it's a matched set to go with my engagement ring so it's a bit cheaper because we bought the engagement ring with them already). It has diamonds around half of the ring..I believe it's 1/6 of a carat

      his is going to be about 350-400. He wanted to get a nice band with a small design on it and a few diamonds (1/6 of a carat as well) in the band itself, but you don't have to do that if your fiance doesn't like it (men can be picky too lol) If that's the case, his will probably be cheaper.

      So that's the price range of a few small diamonds added on, but really if you need to stick to a smaller budget there are bands that are 80-100 bucks which isn't bad at all, and they're still good quality.

      Just shop around online first and see what you find so you'll kind of know what you're talking about when you go to the jewelry store. That's what we did! lol

    How tight are your wedding rings? Do you have to struggle to get them past your knuckle or do they slide on and off very easily?

      Your ring will fit differently after you've worn it for a while. Also, depending on how hot or cold your body is, your fingers will swell and contract.

      Choose a ring that feels slightly snug, and you should shrink into it after about a month of constant wear.

      I wear a 6 1/2 ring, which felt a tight the first time I tried it.
      BUT, now that I've worn it for 6 months, my engagement ring is very loose. This happens because the skin around your ring finger slowly squishes in (if you wear your ring all the time). I will have to get it sized, and my wedding band is half a size smaller.

      If you work out a lot, or go camping a lot, remember to take it off beforehand. Your hands may swell.

      Engagement rings are usually given when he proposes. Some people go looking together before the actual proposal while others go pick one out after the man proposes. Some men buy an engagement ring with no input from the prospective bride. I don't recommend this tactic. The ring should match the prospective bride's style and be something she likes. She's going to be wearing it for a long long time!

      I personally went on websites like bluenile.com and built a ring I liked to give my husband some ideas. He then had an engagement ring made for me that matched what I liked at a local jeweler.

      Wedding rings and wedding bands are given at the wedding. The bride and groom usually pick them out together in advance of the wedding so there will be enough time for the rings to be just right before the ceremony.

      My husband and I had our wedding rings made by the same jeweler who made my engagement ring. They match perfectly so they're a set.

      If there is any difference in wedding bands and wedding rings, it's that bands don't have stones in them while rings do. I think there actually isn't any difference. The terms are interchangeable.

      Both rings are worn on the left ring finger, which is the one next to the pinky. During the engagement, only the engagement ring is worn.       There really aren't much in the way of rules anymore. You could go together and get a matching set - most jewelers will carry matching sets. You could also purchase one for him that matches his personality and he could purchase one for you which matches your engagement ring so you end up with two different styles of wedding band. My husband and I both went with simple gold bands so ours do match - I bought his for him and he purchased mine. It is really up to you. All are acceptable options.

      Whether or not a couple go the engagement ring route is a decision that they should make together. Sometimes they don't do it to save the money. While the traditional engagement ring is a diamond, I know several people who didn't do that, including one of my sisters. Basically, the engagement ring and wedding ring should work together.

      When women have both, the wedding ring goes on first and then the engagement ring. The tradition behind this is that the first ring on is closer to the heart. I don't know of anybody who has both who doesn't wear both of them. My mom wears both of her wedding rings. She and my dad had been married 50 yrs when he died. When she remarried a few years ago, my step-dad suggested that she wear both rings. They look nice together and I think that it was very thoughtful of him (he was married to his first wife for 52 yrs before she died, so he understands...).

      Promise rings are not as old a tradition. Like engagement rings, they're not required. I would assume that if you end up marrying the person who gave you the promise ring you'd move that ring to another finger.

      I agree with the person who said that people spend way too much money on rings. I think that a lot of people (yes, mostly women) are more concerned about the ring (and then the wedding) than the marriage. I've seen some young couples who definitely couldn't afford it spend a lot of money on engagement rings.

    Is it legal to require employees to remove wedding rings?
    I work at a restaurant and recently my boss informed me that all employees with stones in their rings would have to take the rings off. My wedding bands are sacred to me and I'm wondering if I can fight this.

      if the rings are that important to you, do you want to ruin them working in a restaurant?

      if the employer has a policy that is health or safety based it is very legal and expected. this is why a wedding ban is fine it is just anything that has stones which could be lost.

      even though their soldered they can always be unsoldered. it's not a permanent job, they can be unsoldered and sized and soldered back however your gonna have to pay for the unsoldering, additional sizing and soldering back unless there was some sort of extending care plan that was purchase that will cover all those fees.
