Winter Weddings

For those couples seeking a variety of romantic wedding venues for your winter weddings, look no further than the state of California, where you have beautiful ocean views, gorgeous snowy mountains, and wonderful wineries at your disposal.

Have your Winter Wedding at the Ocean

When most people think of a California beach location, they think of the "usual suspects": San Diego, La Jolla, Santa Monica or Santa Barbara. And, of course, those are all great spots for a beach wedding. But, you may also want to consider some other fabulous coastal venues as well:

Avila Beach: Avila Beach is located near San Luis Obispo, just a 40-mile drive away from Hearst Castle. Also located nearby are 3 championship golf courses and the wine country of Paso Robles and Edna Valley. The Avila Lighthouse Suites, a 54-suite resort, offers intimate wedding packages, as well as packages for larger weddings up to 120 guests.

Pismo Beach: South of Avila Beach on the 101 sits Pismo Beach. There are pricey resorts in Pismo Beach, as well as some very affordable wedding venues. One very affordable wedding venue in Pismo Beach is The Best Western Shelter Cove Lodge, located on the northern end of Pismo Beach, away from the center of town and all the tourist activity. It's also a part of Pismo Beach where you get cliffs and a more craggy ocean view - which makes for some pretty spectacular wedding photos. The Best Western Shelter Cove Lodge offers a couple locations on their property for weddings, both with awesome ocean views: The Wedding Garden for seating up to 80 guests; and the Panoramic Gazebo with standing room for up to 25 guests.

Pacific Grove: Pacific Grove is a beautiful little town in the Monterey Peninsula, sometimes overshadowed by nearby Monterey and Carmel. But, it's home to Lover's Point, which has been called "One of the top 10 most romantic places in America" by Sunset Magazine. With the beautiful lawn and cypress trees overlooking the Pacific Ocean, it's easy to see why this is such a sought-after spot for couples to tie the knot. It's also close to the scenic 17-Mile Drive and golf courses of Pebble Beach.

Have your Winter Wedding in the Snow

Yes, California boasts wonderful weather and great beaches. But, California is also home to some wonderful mountain resort areas which make for great winter weddings:

Lake Tahoe: If it's a snowy winter wedding you want, Lake Tahoe is where you want to go. And, if you're both skiers, you may want to check out the Heavenly Ski Wedding Package, which includes a wedding in a secluded spot overlooking Lake Tahoe, after which you ski down the mountain as a newly-married couple. You can call 877-889-6379 for more information.

If you wish to wed in a simple, inexpensive ceremony, you might want to call 888-wed-tahoe for the Lakefront Wedding Chapel Specials walk-in special rate, which includes a wedding at one their elegant chapel locations, video or photos of the wedding, a complimentary bottle of champagne and minister's fee. This package is for 6 people or less.

Big Bear Lake: Big Bear is a Southern California winter playground, and wedding destination favorite, located within driving distance of Los Angeles and San Diego. One unique place you may want to consider for your Big Bear wedding is the StarGAzers Inn, which is also an observatory, offering celestial-themed weddings. They are opened year round.

Have your Winter Wedding at a Winery

The scenery and weather are not the only things which attract people to California. People also come for the wine and the wineries, which makes winery weddings very desirable.

Paso Robles: Paso Robles is known for outstanding wines, particularly their Zinfandels and Syrahs. Located between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Paso Robles is California’s fastest-growing wine region, with nearly 26,000 vineyard acres and more than 170 wineries within a 40-mile territory. It's also a wonderful place for a winery wedding. A few winery wedding venues of note include: Meridian Vineyards and Zenaida Cellars, both of which have barrel rooms available for weddings; an 00004000 d Robert Hall Winery, which offers their wine caverns, which can accommodate up to 200 people.

Sonoma County: Just next door to the Napa Valley wine country sits Sonoma County with its outstanding wineries and beautiful country. One winery you may consider for your wedding is the Buena Vista Winery, which is California's oldest premium winery. It's located just 5 minutes from Sonoma's Plaza Square, and is a California Historic Landmark. You can choose to hold your ceremony in their rustic stone Press House, built in 1862, or outdoors in their secluded, wooded area.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Winter weddings!?....?
How common are they? I know that summer weddings are very popular but do you think a winter wedding could be great too? I want to get married between the months of November and February. Obviously it would have to be indoors.....so how can I make that fun and cool? Another option (if we can't make that work) is to get married elsewhere somewhere warm...which could be nice but marrying out of the country can get complicated. So ultimately I would rather stay here. What can I do to make a winter wedding really great?
If you've been to a winter wedding what was it like?

    • ANSWER:
winter weddings are almost as common as summer weddings now! they can be soooo pretty if done right. think sparkly, snowy, shimmery, bold colors.. don't do pastels.. i went to one where they did sparklers at the end when the bride and groom left. it was at nighttime and everything was beautiful and glistening. really, the weather shouldn't matter.. your theme should somewhat follow the natural season, but other than that, you can wear sleeveless, wear highheels.. or whatever! don't be held back on those terms!!

i would definitely recommend a winter wedding!! and if you are having it like january or february, you can stock up on all the after christmas sales on wintery looking stuff like blue and white and purple sparkly things... (just don't do red and green!!!) :)

  2. QUESTION:
    Winter Weddings?
How many of you young people are planning a beautiful winter wedding this year and how many guest are you planning to have attend?
I think thats what I wish you....
I hope you have a wonderful wedding full of all the love you two deserve....

    • ANSWER:
My wedding is this Saturday! I am have such a big family and a lot of Fraternity brothers and I cannot invite them all.

Actually when my fiance and I planned the wedding on my side alone was about 250!!! We decided to get a wedding package of 125. The problem is we went over by about 50 people. For all those who didn't RSVP will be getting cut from our list.

I AM SO EXCITED. We both just turned 24 and we've known each other since we were 9! 15 years! It is so great!

  3. QUESTION:
Whar bridesmaid dresses colors ok for winter weddings?
The winter is coming, and my wedding is in winter. So I want to know where i can find perfect bridesmaid dresses color for winter weddings.

  4. QUESTION:
What is your opinion on winter/Christmas-time weddings?
I absolutely love the Christmas season. To me, everything about it is absolutely magical. When I get married (whenever that is), I would love to have my wedding during the Christmas season, probably around the first week or so of December. After talking about that with my mom and my boyfriend, their main concern is that nobody would want to travel during the holidays.

So, my question is... what is your opinion on winter weddings?
I live in Northern California (San Francisco Bay Area), so snow definitely wouldn't be an issue. The only weather issue would possibly be rain.

    • ANSWER:
I love them - and if I didn't live in the rainiest place in the world (or so it feels) I would go for it too! But winter here is awful :-(

If you give guests enough warning (send out Save The Date cards etc) it shouldn't be a problem. It's the holiday season so people will be in a good mood. But bear in mind that money may be tight for some so they may not be able to afford to travel to it.

If you want this and your bf agrees to it, go for it - it's a beautiful time of year. Just expect that not everyone may make it or be able to give generously for gifts etc. If you're ok with that, there is nothing to worry about!

  5. QUESTION:
What kind of flowers are good for winter weddings?
I'm getting married on 2/20/10 and I was looking for some ideas for winter wedding flowers. My colors are light pink and espresso brown. I obviously know that roses are always in season, and they will be the staple flower in the bouquets, but I'm also looking for some supplemental flowers for the bouquets, corsages and boutonnieres. I want to stay away from red flowers (too cliche around Valentine's Day) and I like the more traditional blooms. Also, I live in Minnesota, if that makes a difference regarding my selection. Thanks in advance!

    • ANSWER:
Ranunculus are available in white and pink and become available in February---I love them because they are kind of like roses but have a softer appearance. You should also be able to get tulips and camellias in pink and white during February. Sweetpeas also come in white and pink and are a really sweet, feminine flower---a good compliment to roses!
Gardenias come in white and are available year-round, but they are very fragrant so I personally don't think that they are a good choice for weddings. Calla lilies, orchids, and lily of the valley seem to be the most popular wedding choices that are available year-round (besides roses). I am personally using light pink roses and white callas (with bells of ireland in the altar arrangements) at my wedding in April. Hope these ideas help!

  6. QUESTION:
What is your opinion of winter weddings?
I read a study that says that February and January are the two least months to get married in. Why is this? And why jump on the bandwagon and do what everybody else does? Sorry if I sound harsh. What I mean is, don't you want to do something different than what most people do?

    • ANSWER:
I like winter weddings. I can totally relate to you. It gets annoying when you find out 5 of your friends are all marrying in the same 3 months apart from eachother. I mean come on have some individuality!

Esraa GROW. UP. Nobody said anything about competition or being different just to be better. Wow...

  7. QUESTION:
What should I wear with this dress to keep me warm at winter weddings?
I've bought this beautiful dress to wear to some upcoming Christmas weddings but need something nice to wear over the top to keep me warm during the ceremonies in the cold churches. What should I get?

    • ANSWER:

  8. QUESTION:
What to wear to 3 winter weddings?
I have three weddings to go to this winter, Dec, Jan, and Feb. I really don't want to wear the same dress to all three. What do I wear to a wedding in the winter time where I can still look good but not have to freeze my buns off? Please help...

    • ANSWER:
Buy some separate pieces that you can mix and match into three different outfits. A skirt and blouse in the same colour, a jacket to throw on over it for the second outfit, and perhaps a nice sweater (it IS winter). Grab some belts you could put over the sweater (form fitting), maybe a scarf to change the one colour look, earrings and necklaces. You'll probably be able to get away with the same pair of shoes for each outfit, but if you must (and you know you want to) grab some different shoes.

  9. QUESTION:
What do you wear to weddings in winter?
I have a wedding to go to in 2 weeks and its winter so what do i wear thats under 0

    • ANSWER:
well im guessing it'll be inside so a nice dress. And you need to know what time the wedding it... ir if it's black tie .because that'll also help you decide what to wear.

  10. QUESTION:
    Are winter weddings cheaper?
My fiancee and I are getting married in November 2010, and I have heard that winter weddings are cheaper.. Im just curious to how much cheaper? If you have had a winter wedding was it alot cheaper? or the same as a summer wedding? Thanks a bunch!

    • ANSWER:
I'm getting married December 19th and was under the same impression that weddings in the off season are cheaper...however, I have not gotten a deal on much. The reception venue is the same (although I think that is b/c it's around Christmas time and it's not an off-season for them w/ Christmas parties), dj's (same reason). The only thing I got a deal on was the limo (0 dollars off) and maybe the flowers.
I didn't choose to get married during the winter b/c it's cheaper, so it doesn't really bother me, but if you chose November just b/c you thought it would be cheaper, it's not worth it in my opinion.
But who knows...I'm not much of a barterer, so maybe if you try to talk people down, you may get better deals!
      Good Luck!!!

  11. QUESTION:
Where should I look and How do I become a caterer/server for weddings etc for a summer job? (winter park, fl)?
I'm really interested in serving food at receptions, weddings, fancy parties etc, but whenever I search for job openings online, the only thing that comes up are chef positions etc. I'm 17 and looking for a fun summer job, so any suggestions for how to find this would be great thanks!

    • ANSWER:
You're in the perfect place on earth for this type of position. Disney is always in need of servers and food help. Apply there.
      And, they also do weddings.
Getting a position there would really give you a good overview and experience in the food world.
If that doesn't work, start applying to local caterers. You can do all of your ground work in either of these job resources. It will teach you all about this world of catering. They're just great places to start.
You might also want to consider a resort in your area. They prepare and serve food. The resources are endless. All it takes is an application.
      You'll do great.
      Now, go do it!

  12. QUESTION:
How much do weddings normally cost? any ideas for a winter wedding?
so i want to get married in December (since that is when i first met my bf, and i LOVE xmas as well) any ideas for colors?

and how much do weddings cost? (for roughly about 100 people) and any suggestions? thanks!

    • ANSWER:
The cost of a wedding various tremendously.

The average wedding is supposed to cost something like £16,000, but that is just an average of numbers. While many couples can wed on a couple of thousand, other can go into hundreds of thousands.

My wedding in July is more-or-less on similar scale to yours, and ours is going to come to something in the region of £5000. It's a nice, but fairly modest affair.

As for colours, any Christmas-related colours like reds and greens will look lovely, as will the use of candles.

  15. QUESTION:
I heard couples who have winter weddings as apposed to summer weddings have longer marriages..is this true?

    • ANSWER:
That's silly - don't let superstition get involved in your marriage. It's about two people and their compatibility. Bad marriages happen in the Winter and Summer - GREAT marrianges happen in the Winter and Summer. But hey, if it really bothers you, get married in the Fall or Spring!!

      Popular Wedding Theme: Vineyard

A vineyard theme is a wonderful wedding design idea. It is fantastic for a wedding which will take place at an actual vineyard, naturally, but can also be easily adapted to a wedding held in another venue. These are some great ideas on how to create an elegant vineyard theme wedding that no one will ever forget.

Obviously, the ideal location for a vineyard theme wedding would be an actual vineyard. Many regions have small local wineries, even if they are nowhere near famous wine growing regions like Napa Valley in California. You might just be surprised to learn that you...

  18. QUESTION:
    YOUR OPINION: Winter Weddings?
Hey all, so my fiance and I have started to really get things worked out for our upcoming wedding only 6 months away. But we need some more opinions, so what do you think?

At first, I wanted a very chic and glamorous wedding, with more of a powder blue and silver color theme, but both of our parents and friends have suggested that a more Christmas theme would be better (like red, pinecones, spices, cocoa... the whole shabang).

It does appear that that is a more common theme for winter weddings.

So has anybody ever been to a winter wedding? And what did you think? What are your personal thoughts on the different themes?

[The wedding will be Dec. 24, in Denver, Colorado]

    Thanks! =]

    • ANSWER:
My sister is getting married on Dec 27th. Our mom wanted her to go with more xmas colors, but that's just not what she wanted. Her colors are black and white with aqua accents. She thought that using xmas colors would be too typical.

If the whole xmas colors/pinecone thing is the look that you want, that's great. But if not, stick to your guns and have the colors/theme that you want! Powder blue and silver would be beautiful and would be great for a winter wedding. Those colors remind me of winter, ice and snow and such.

My sister is doing a hot chocolate and coffee bar, which will be a nice treat! But that's really the only winter themed thing that she has planned.

  19. QUESTION:
I need your opinions on my wedding page? Regarding winter weddings?

They already have a great app called Wedding Buzz (formerly Wedding Book).

Also, there are sites like www.theknot.com who provide ANYTHING and EVERYTHING no matter what kind of a wedding you are having. They also provide free websites for couples to use for their own weddings.

  20. QUESTION:
Opinions?? What are great colors for fall or winter weddings?

    • ANSWER:
The fall is filled with bold colors, like warm oranges and yellows. It is good to have a balance of neutral and warm colors. Let the natural landscape of fall foliage help to define your color scheme.

Winter colors are wonderful too! The cooler colors of winter typically are blues and lavenders with neutrals tones again. You can add a sparkle here and there for a snowy touch. It all depends on what your taste is.

  21. QUESTION:
    Winter weddings question?

  23. QUESTION:
    Winter weddings in Portland?
I'm getting married next December in Portland, OR. I still need to find a place for the wedding and reception. I don't want something too expensive (hopefully 00 or under). Also, I need to take the weather into consideration; I don't want the wedding to be cancelled or postponed if the roads are too icy or snowy (like near Mt. Hood). Thanks for the help!

    • ANSWER:
I don't know whether you are including the cost of catering, but if not, the Portland Art Museum has one of the most beautiful reception/wedding halls in Portland. Spiral staircase, beautiful ballroom, it's absolutely divine. It was my dream facility.

Tiffany ballroom is gorgeous too, especially for reception only.

The big cost is the catering. Pretty much for all the places.

  24. QUESTION:
How often are Weddings held in winter?
I plan on doing a Videographer business for Weddings, and I remain curious.

    • ANSWER:
We had ours in December. We live in Canada and I'm originally from Louisiana. I moved here to be with him. We have a huge sliding glass door on the second floor which is where we had the wedding. We had really simple decorations. Just some wedding bells and white streamers hung really pretty in front of the window. It was snowing outside and it was white and beautiful.

  25. QUESTION:
Why do people hate on winter weddings so much?
I live in the midwest...and about 90 percent of the people (my friends who also live in the midwest) complain about winter. I am getting married in a month and my family and the groom's family are all upset about the season. They want SUMMER! Excuse me if I don't wanna sweat in my wedding dress and risk having a thunderstorm and we get them REALLY bad here, sometimes the power even goes out...but we rarely if ever have snowstorms.

For one thing...if people here don't like snow...why do they even LIVE here in the first place? Sick of hearing the complaining. I drive out in the snow all the time, driving is my job. And if anything I SHOULD be the one complaining. But I like snow. It's beautiful!

How do I get these people to stop complaining about my wedding day!? We are getting it from both sides of the family....coworkers...and even vendors!!!!!
Jadwiga has been BLOCKED and REPORTED.

    • ANSWER:
Its stupid of people to tell you to what season to have your wedding in. I despise the winter and cold, but if a friend or family member decided to get married in the winter, I would respect the fact that that is what they want, because it is about the bride and groom's wishes.

I can't help but comment on your "For one thing...if people here don't like snow...why do they even LIVE here in the first place?"

I live in Michigan...I hate Michigan...I hate cold...I hate snow. But I was also born here, have family and a job here, so escaping isn't so simple, probably the same case with your guests. It was still very rude of them to complain about the season of your wedding, that's totally your call.

How do you get them to stop complaining? Next time you hear them whine, you sarcastically say, "I'm sorry, I should have been more considerate about what you want for my wedding, I forgot it was all about you".

As for your vendors? Say, "I'm sorry to inconvenience you, perhaps I should take my business elsewhere". Shame on them!

  26. QUESTION:
I'm planning a wedding for the winter. What are good colors for winter weddings?
The wedding is going to be in December but I am not sure were I want to have my wedding nor the colors to use in the wedding. My fiance is atheist and I am baptist; however, we agreed that I could choose the preacher if I do not make him get married in a church. Surprisingly enough, that does not bother me. The only problem is were I can have my wedding. Since it is a winter wedding, the wedding will have to be indoors.
My fiance and I just switched are wedding date to October. I've picked the colors red, burnt orange, and chocolate. Do these sound like good colors for this time of year??

  30. QUESTION:
what do you think of winter white weddings?
thinking of getting married jan 2010 in uk where im from.Obviously our weather is very unpredictable but thought it would be nice at the start of the year, winter theme, bridesmaids in fluffy shrugs and then jetting off to somewhere hot for honeymoon?
I have had my wedding dress for 9 months, maggie sottero and it has silver and pearl detail around the bust so like what emily said,i was thinking of adding a silver theme with the white and then going for a deep colour for the bridesmid dresses.Thanx guys for all your veiws!
Wedding in florida sounds great future Mrs Zigler.Funny enough, florida is where we are thinking for honeymoon.Ive been looking at deep puple bm dresses and they do look stunning and just that little bit different. All the best for your feb wedding!

    • ANSWER:
I'm getting married in Jan 2010 too! We choose a destination wedding to keep costs down and will be getting married in the Italian alps. At least we will be guaranteed beautiful white snow. I have choosen to wear white to keep the winter theme and then silver for my only bridesmaid. I will be keeping all the jewelry clear crystal so give everything a bit of an ice queen feel but I dont want to go overbaord.

It's family only and we have booked a long quite traditional meal afterwards in the hotel. They have a small bar with a huge open fire for us to use which is why I chose that hotel!

Have a faux fur bolero in white for my bridesmaid and little cream fur coat and hat for my daughter who will be two.

After that the men are wearing grey Italian day suits (nothing too formal) and I think I will decide to go with crystal bouquets and buttonholes.

I have tonnes of ideas that I didn't use because I wanted to keep things simple. I still have them all on file so let me know if there is anything I can suggest.

Hope you have a great wedding. I think (obviously) that a winter wedding is the perfect time to unite...if you get married when the world is all bear then you have all the glorious days of growing together ahead of you!

PS> This is the way I'm starting my wedding invitations...
"the weather outside is frightful, but our wedding will be delightful!"

  31. QUESTION:
Help, i have 2 weddings to go to this winter, whats cute and trendy to wear?
what do you wear w/ all of the tank tops you see in the stores? I dont like jackets, too bulky.

    • ANSWER:
since you did not say so, I am assuming you are not in the wedding. (lucky for you no pink taffeta brides maid es dresses!) But then I also am assuming you are female. You really should wear a dress, unless it is a theme type wedding (if BBQ, Laue you get the drift) but if it is an evening wedding a nice ladies tux is always a hit. Try the thrift store and build your own if you can't find one. If your lucky you will be able to go into the mens department for a nice tux jacket. Good luck.

  34. QUESTION:
What are some reasons a company might have peak sales during the winter months?
I am doing a project for school and I need to come up with reasons a company would have peak sales during the winter. I am drawing a blank. All I could come up with is because of the holidays. Anyone have any others?

I just need to list 2-3 reasons any company, not a specific one, could have peak sales. Reasons I listed for the summer months are tourism, weddings and the preferred weather in the certain areas. Now I just need a few examples for the winter.
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO READ ANYMORE???? I ALREADY THOUGHT OF BECAUSE OF THE HOLIDAYS. I NEED A A COUPLE MORE IDEAS TO ADD TO IT.

    • ANSWER:
You nailed the primary reason of the holidays (Christmas/ Hanukkah), but this is not only because it is the gift giving season.

      Also:
      1) Kids are out of school
      2) Kids getting more new school clothes/uniforms because they outgrew them since August
      3) People buying new coats/gloves/winter gear/rain gear, etc
      4) Many parents/families take vacation and traveling to visit families (more airline and car/hotel rentals)
      5) More free time to shop
      6) Gets dark earlier (less time to be outside)
      7) Cold/rainy weather - want to be inside
      8) Entertaining more (more food, drinks, decorations bought)
      9) End of year sales draw shoppers
      10) New Year's resolution (buy gym equipment or get gym membership)
      11) Making final tax deductible purchases (for tax year)
      12) Businesses spending final end-of-year budget

I'm going to a winter wedding this weekend and I'm wanting to wear this black dress it does have a red sash below the bust, and is knee length. Do you think this would be appropriate?
Personally, I don't think that wearing black to weddings is inappropriate anymore but the wedding is at 2 o'clock and reception isn't until 5. What are your thoughts on the color of this dress?

The wedding is not black tie and I don't think it will be a very formal wedding either.

  36. QUESTION:
Can I have a wedding by the beach during fall/winter months in orange county area?
I'm conflicted, i love beach weddings and winter themes...PLEASE HELP

    • ANSWER:
Do you live in O.C.? You should know that it will be windy and cold and probably foggy by the beach. Go to the farmer's almnac and see how weather at the beach has been in the fall/winter in OC.
I did that when trying to plan my wedding. It hadn't rained on the date I picked in over 40 years. Guess what year it decided to rain? My wedding date. Everything turned out o.k. It rained the whole night before and most of the morning, but luckily the area we were getting married in, wasn't muddy and we were still able to have an outside wedding.
      Good Luck

  37. QUESTION:
An alternative to courthouse wedding in winter?
We can't get married til winter this year, and he's getting deployed shortly after that. I hate the idea of a courthouse wedding because a) it seems impersonal to me and b) that is how he married his first wife. Yes he is over her. Yes we are both sure we love each other and want to be together for the rest of our lives. I don't need advice on our relationship I just need ideas on other ways to do weddings that don't require a ton of planning please.

    • ANSWER:
How about a simple restaurant wedding and reception? You can invite your closes friends and relatives. Have the table arranged so they make an aisle for you to walk down. You can say your vows on the dance floor. Don't have any bridesmaid or groomsmen....that will complicate things. Take your photos before the wedding so immediately after you say I-do you can stay and party with your guest.

Or rent a banquet hall if you don't want a restaurant...I think the easiest thing is to have it all in one venue. Although I did decide to rent a chapel for the ceremony. I'm having my reception at a banquet room at a restaurant...they provide everything. Even the centerpieces. And the centerpieces were free. They had 3 to choose from. The only time I needed to talk to them is when we chose the food. It was a one-stop-shop and I love it.

Or if you have a friend with a large home, have a home wedding. Then go out for dinner or just drinks. My friend got married in her living room around 8p on a Saturday. It was maybe 15 people there. Afterwards we went to a lounge for drinks to celebrate.

My reception will be at Brio Tuscan Grille..maybe there's one in your area

    Winter:

    Spring:

    Summer:

    • ANSWER:

  41. QUESTION:
Is a little black dress okay to wear to a Winter wedding?
One of my good friends is getting married tomorrow... and I bought a little black dress to wear...it's not that great... It's not that pretty.. I don't like it too much. But I am just wondering if that is what you are supposed to wear to a Winter Wedding? I haven't been to many weddings... The last wedding I went to I wore a really nice shirt and black pants...if that tells you how wedding savvy I am.

    • ANSWER:
If you can add colorful accessories to the black dress - i.e. shoes, bag, sweater/cardigan/scarf, etc - then it will be fine. If it's just straight black, then you might want to think about wearing something else. You don't want to look too dark, down, mournful, etc.

Mainly at weddings you don't want to draw attention away from the bridal party (especially the bride). So no white or extremely bright colors.

    • ANSWER:
Winter wonderland would be beautiful with a tall vase with bare branches spray painted white or silver with crystal (or acrylic) snowflakes and icicles hanging from fishing line with votive candles surrounding it below. You could even sprinkle the irridescent confetti or glitter on the tables and branches. I live in So Cal and that would be a nice change from our wonderfully temperate weather. Your accent colors could be a light, icy blue kinda shimmery. As a wedding coach I have all kinds of ideas, let me know if I can be of any other help!! Best wishes......................

  45. QUESTION:
    Ideas for a winter wedding?
Ok, we had to push our wedding back until the end of next year instead of next summer. (still undecided if it will be december or january though lol...more likely december).
So now i'm looking for ideas for a winter wedding. I'm going to still use my same colors from what was to be our summer wedding...A dark/jewel tone purple, silver and ivory and possibly a hint of teal.
Everything i look at online with winter weddings has xmas colors(which I DON'T want), what are some great ways to have a really nice winter wedding? pix or sites helpful thanks!

BTW: i live in the SF bay area, CA so no snow but possibly rain.
i'm not getting married in SF, so a cable car ride would be impossible.
My dress will be ivory(and its covered in sparkles!) and I am planning on getting a small tiara.
My dress will be ivory(and its covered in sparkles!) and I am planning on getting a small tiara.
we're still aiming for the Brazilian room in tilden park(berkeley)... Though I've heard it books quickly...

    • ANSWER:
I absolutely love your colors. I think that you should stick with them no matter what.
Have you guys decided on a venue yet? If so make sure that they won't have any Christmas decorations up at the time of your wedding - or if they do if it would be possible for you to take them down for the evening.
I think you can do things to add a few touches of winter to the wedding. What about using some silver snowflakes? Maybe you can do something like this:
      http://www.invitationsbydawn.com/we_viewens.cfm?sItemCode=WedEns4875&sCatalogCode=WedEnsDD&iStartRow=1&lCriteria=244&strcontinue=yes&strsearch=yes&format=wedensdda
      http://www.invitationsbydawn.com/We_ViewEns.cfm?sItemCode=WedEns4669&sCatalogCode=WedEnsDD&iStartRow=1&lCriteria=244&strcontinue=yes&strsearch=yes&format=wedensdda

You could use ornaments to make your centerpieces. You can find purple and silver ball ornaments and create something with that. It would be really pretty - and definitely cheap to make. The dollar store carries tons of ornaments around the holiday. Or, you could buy them after the holiday's this year for the clearance price...
Maybe you can do something like this:
      http://z.about.com/d/interiordec/1/G/F/J/o-compoteornamentslavendar.jpg
      http://blog.thehandcraftedwedding.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/12/03/glasses.jpg
      http://z.about.com/d/entertaining/1/0/X/F/blueornaments.jpg
Or, the twig/branch centerpieces are popular - they are cheap and add a nice touch of winter.
      http://www.liliajewelry.com/Knot_profile/images/centerpiece-ideas.jpg

For favors you could get some of those clear ornament balls and fill them up with purple/silver candy.

I would also try looking around this holiday season and see what kind of decorations you can find. There are probably plenty of things in silver that you can use.

  46. QUESTION:
Planning a Vintage Wedding in the Winter?
I am getting married December 4, 2010 and I know that I want a vintage inspired wedding. I have been doing a lot of research about winter weddings. I have noticed that winter wedding colors are usually the typical winter colors like silvers blues and whites. Or reds and greens and black. They are all dark colors or colors of ice and cold. None of these really are something I would pick. The colors I really want are a dusty rose, cream/ivory, and a light antique gold. My question is are these colors stupid for a December wedding. I live in the rocky mountains and there will be snow on the ground. I also am struggling with decor that is vintage, not tacky, and wouldn't be stupid in the winter. Any suggestions. I don't want flower centerpieces if I can avoid them.

  47. QUESTION:
Is There Anyone Else Who Feels Theme Weddings Are?????
getting totally out of hand???? Elves, dragons, vampires, cinderella .is this a wedding or a costume party? perhaps it's just me and my age but I feel a wedding should be dignified, classy, and on a mature level. Sure, have an inspiration such as my first wedding...inspired by Gone With The Wind but I did that by the style of my dress and wearing a picture hat instead of a veil, and having my girls carry parasols and wearing wrist corsages..and didn't have people as field hands chopping cotton and singing "Old Man River" or the reception room decorated like Atlanta Burning........

I've seen questions in reference to beach themes, winter weddings, etc and they all sound lovely. And I-'m not so stuffy that I feel you can never bend tradition...but all this Princess-Cinderella, Dragons, Elves,Nascar, etc smacks not of the gentle, classy dignity you expect from a wedding celebration but little girls playing wedding ....anybody else of my generation feel the same way?
Oh Grammy am I ever with you..I got smart the second time I married...smal intimate gathering at my sister's with very close family and friends..foods either ordered from a deli, bakery, and many home made..it was wonderful, fun and sooo family oriented....this theme insanity is turning wedding days into movie spectaculars befitting Ben Hur , Cleopatra and The Towering Inferno....I can just imagine it years down the road...."Here's Mommy & Daddy at our Wedding..we're the one's wearing matching rings and vampire teeth!"
To all who disagree with me here..I will NOT give any of you a thumbs down as you all are intitled to your opinions, no matter how you express them..I just miss the dignity that these weddings are lacking...it should be a wedding, not a costume party....they are gonna be sooo embarassed years down the road at their wedding pix, believe me....especialy when their kids laugh at them...
For the record I don't find 'theme'weddings of this sort offensive...flabbergasted is more like it..and after that wore off I've been laughing hysterically ever since.....
To those calling me hypocritical you need to get your terminology straight..my first wedding gown and my grils dreses were in the old south antebellum style...I did not have an old south theme...style is not theme....and having wedding decor & colors influenced by a place such as the beach is not a theme unless you plan on dumping tons of sand on the dance floor and pass out scuba gear to your guests...sheesh....
I think this is one that the Yahoo! Answers members should vote on...aint gonna change my mind but it'll be interesting to see which way it goes......and maybe the one who comes up with the chosen best answer wil approve of my wedding theme when my hubby and I retake our vows...he looks like Santa so maybe Santa's Workship will be our theme...anybody have a reindeer suit????
...and I am not not angry, believe me...haven't had such a good laugh in years.....

    • ANSWER:
First, I think it's interesting that you feel *some* themes are ok ~ but others aren't. It seems that you aren't against themes entirely~ you are just against themes you don't like. A little hypocritical, no?

I have always felt that a wedding is a celebration of the couple, their current relationship & their future together. Yes, for many people (including myself) that involves a classy, traditional celebration. But all people are not cut from the same mold ~ if someone chooses to celebrate w/a theme that is *special to them* who am I to say it is wrong???

Especially considering the fact that these days many couples are funding & planning their own wedding ~ let them do what makes them happy. No one says you have to attend, if you find it so offensive.

I never go to a wedding expecting a "gentle, classy dignity" I do, however, expect to enjoy a few hours with friends & family & a couple who is embarking on a new adventure. And if that celebration includes Nascar, Elves or even Elvis ~ so be it.

EDIT: "Style" "theme" ~ you're splitting hairs, here. Who cares if the parents are embarrased in later years. It's not your life, so why worry about it??

  48. QUESTION:
How do brides find winter coats?
Something for over the dress- not just a shawl or little bolero.. It's going to be snowy winter.

All my search results just turn up things like articles about fur on dresses and coats for winter weddings... but I mean, I'm buying the dress early, you'd think I could find a coat.

    Any suggestions or links?

    Thanks!
While I appreciate the input, for example from Reba, it still doesnt give me any ideas other than "look for something somewhere closer to the wedding" but where do I look? There are no "coat" sections on bridal sites.. and there are no 'bridal' sections where I usually buy coats..

I would just like to get an idea of pricing, availability, etc. where are these pretty cloaks i'm hearing about at?

oof, i feel like that came off as rude... I don't mean to.. it's just a little frustrating! It'll look ridiculous not wearing a coat in the snow when pictures (like to the "just married" car) get taken..

    • ANSWER:
I wore a fur trimmed velvet cape for my December wedding, with a white fur hat instead of a veil. I liked it and it was appropriate for the weather. I was the only one not freezing for the photos too! Best of luck for your wedding.

Ok more info! My sister made my cape for me, and the hat. She is a fashion designer so I guess I'm lucky. However a good seamstress would be able to make one for you and it wouldn't be that expensive I'm sure. Phone one up and ask for a quote.

  49. QUESTION:
Can i pull off a wedding in 9 months?
I just got engaged and i really would like a fall/winter wedding. this fall is too soon but March is the very end of winter. Next Fall/Winter seems to far and i don't want to wait that long. How long did it take you to plan your wedding? and good budget tips or ideas? I live in Southern California if that helps...Winter weddings out here are a joke but i do love the cool brisk clear days that come with the winter weather out here.

    • ANSWER:
Absolutely! Contrary to what many will say, it does not take at least a year to plan a wedding. Most of that time, you're doing nothing.

We planned ours in 8 months without any problems and my cousin did hers in 2 months--again with no problem and neither of us skimped on anything.

      * Have a tentative guest list in mind and have a number of how many people you would ideally like.
      * Go look at venues ASAP. Go in with a price in mind and be flexible as far as time of the year and date. Most venues will want to simply book their remaining days, so it actually gives you an advantage because they may just give you a break on price.
      * Before running to meet a dozen different vendors, do research first and narrow them down to a couple based on your own research and recommendations from people. Do photo and video first, since they book up the fastest, then dj/mc and your florist last. If you do enough background and know what you're looking for, it's not too difficult.
      * Go dress shopping. Also go dress shopping for BM dresses--take one or two of your BM (I recommend taking the hardest to dress and one other one) to try on dresses and decide. Pick your wedding colors AFTER the BM dresses because it's much harder to find dresses in specific colors at times than it is to choose a color for your wedding when you already know what colors the BM dresses come in.
      * You still have time for invites, but start looking and get an idea of what you'd like. In addition, send out your save the dates as soon as you book your venue if you are doing this.

To be honest with you, we booked everything in less than 2 months and I spent the rest of the time doing not much of anything. If you are organized, know what you want and are flexible, wedding planning is not as difficult as some make it.

  50. QUESTION:
I want to make a butterfly wedding cake for my wedding in january. anyone have ideas how I can do that?
I saw the Martha Stewart Weddings winter 2009 cover, but I can't find it online in a high resolution image and I don't want to use those ugly butterflies she did, but I want a rainbow effect. Links, ideas?

    • ANSWER:
      Greetings!
I actually make and sell Butterflies for decorating cakes! I know the magazine you are referring to as well, I've made a homage rainbow cascading butterfly cake based on that cake. My butterflies are Handmade in the U.S.A. drawn, designed and created from scratch (no clip art or stolen images from online) waterproof, made with a semi-transparent plastic film, they have Real looking antennae that I attach individually to each which holds up on close inspection. You can apply a backing of fondant to them to make them easily attachable with fondant cakes; the backing also makes the butterflies "POP" nicely on the cake. I create 8 different sizes, I have 200 Butterfly designs, I can color match and I do custom request orders too, an optional add on of attached wire to the butterflies which can be cut down to any length needed and insert into cakes or cupcakes easily. These butterflies are also good for invitations, scrapbooking, home decoration, just about anything you can imagine!

Check out my Butterflies, see if they will work for you! If you have more questions or would like to order please contact me.

Make it a Butterfly filled day!
